Brigman is the co-creator of the Power Pack series from Marvel Comics. She illustrated the Brenda Starr syndicated comic strip for 15 years. She currently teaches part time in the Sequential Art Department of the Savannah College of Art and Design, Atlanta branch. June received the San Diego Comic-Con Ink Pot Award in 2014. He is currently working on a follow up project.

Jamal Igle began his career in comics at the early age of 17, working as intern at DC while attending the High School of Art and Design. He began penciling full-time in 1993 and his body of work includes lengthy runs on FirestormNightwing, and Supergirl at DC. More recently, Igle took on the role of Vice President of Marketing at Action Lab Entertainment, where he published his Molly Danger and Venture titles. His work in AHOY Comics’ Wrong Earth debuts in September, 2018, and his Jughead: The Hunger variant covers can be seen in Archie Comics.

Ed McGuinness broke into the comic industry in 1995, working on three issues of Harris Comics’ Vengeance of Vampirella. After working on a few titles for Awesome Entertainment, including Fighting American and Youngblood, he took over art duties on Marvel Comics’ Deadpool in 1998. He has recently been handling art duties on Marvel’s Avengers.

After an initial foray into fanzines, Jerry Ordway found work at DC Comics as a result of a talent search at the 1980 Chicago Comicon, starting on anthology titles such as Mystery in Space and Weird War Tales. An artist in his own right, he is renowned for his inking work at DC Comics, including the industry-changing Crisis on Infinite EarthsZero Hour: Crisis in Time, and Countdown, as well as runs on SupermanWonder Woman, and JLA, as well as writing and painting The Power of Shazam! OGN and writing the monthly series that followed.

NYC – The Art of the Avengers & Other Marvel Heroes Exhibition

Legendary Thor artist and writer Walt Simonson will be on hand at the Society of Illustrators for the exhibition opening on Thursday, July 12th at 7:30 PM!

Press Release:

The Museum of Illustration at the Society of Illustrators is pleased to present an exhibition of Marvel Comics original artwork by Jack Kirby, Walt Simonson, Jim Steranko, John Buscema, John Romita, Steve Ditko, Dick Ayers, Neal Adams, and other comic book artists, on display from July 5th through October 20, 2018.

This exhibition of work from the Marvel Universe will feature original art showcasing characters seen in Marvel’s latest blockbuster hit, Avengers: Infinity War.

The exhibition includes vintage, original comic artwork from all years of Marvel Comics history. The selections illustrate how Marvel’s innovative creative teams initially led by legendary creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, kept the Marvel Universe evolving with the times. From the early 1960s where the character’s distinct personalities were formulated, to the 1970s and 1980s with Marvel hitting its creative stride, to the modern era, where super heroes have gained mainstream recognition.

Significant pieces of artwork will be exhibited publicly for the first time, including original comic book pages featuring core members of Marvel’s Avengers team. Also featured is a stunning selection of the art of Spider-Man (who tried to join the Avengers several times), The Hulk, The Black Panther, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man.

The exhibition will be assembled from the collection of Marvel art collector Mike Burkey, and other notable collectors, and is organized and curated by comic art collector and historian Rob Pistella (curator of the blockbuster The Art of Spider-Man exhibition held at the Society in 2017).

At over 200 pieces of original art, this exhibition will be the largest selection of vintage and modern original Marvel art that has ever been displayed in the world.

An opening reception to the public will be held on Thursday July 12th at 7:30 PM.

SF – Supergirl: Being Super Signing

Join Mariko Tamaki and Gene Luen Yang at the Bindery on Wednesday, June 6th at 7:30 PM for a lively conversation about writing graphic novels for young readers, encouraging kids to engage in the world around them through reading, and the importance of reading outside of your comfort zone. Mariko Tamaki’s work for DC Comics includes Supergirl: Being Super and the forthcoming Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass (June 2019). Gene Luen Yang’s work for DC Comics includes Superman and New Super-Man.

Mariko Tamaki, author of the Caldecott Honor and Eisner Award-winning This One Summer, and Eisner Award-nominated artist Joëlle Jones (Lady Killer) combine forces for Supergirl: Being Super! This is the Girl of Steel as you’ve never seen her before. A truly innovative origin story, a coming-of-age tale of “Being Super,” full of heart with added teenage irony.

Welcome to Midvale, home to Liberty High School and an unusual girl named Kara Danvers. While it may seem like your ordinary town, girls like Kara make it extraordinary. She’s super-strong, she can fly and she crash-landed on Earth in a rocket ship. But for Kara Danvers, winning the next track meet, celebrating her 16th birthday and surviving her latest mega-zit are her top concerns.

Now Kara’s incredible powers are kicking into high gear–and people she trusted are revealing creepy ulterior motives. The time has come for her to choose between the world where she was born and the only world she’s ever known.

Mariko Tamaki is an award-winning Canadian writer living in Oakland, California. She is the author of Saving Montgomery Sole and the co-creator, with Jillian Tamaki, of This One Summer, which received the prestigious Eisner and Ignatz awards as well as Caldecott and Printz honors. Her growing slate of critically acclaimed comics and graphic novels includes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tomb Raider, Adventure Time, She-Hulk, Lumberjanes, Supergirl: Being Super and New Super-Man.

Gene Luen Yang began making comics and graphic novels more than fifteen years ago. In 2006, his Eisner Award-winning book, American Born Chinese (First Second Books), became the first graphic novel to be nominated for a National Book Award and the first to win the American Library Association’s Printz Award. His 2013 book, Boxers & Saints (First Second Books), a two-volume graphic novel about the Boxer Rebellion, was nominated for a National Book Award and won the L.A. Times Book Prize. Gene Luen Yang made his mainstream comics debut on Superman, with artists John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson. In addition cartooning, Gene teaches creative writing through Hamline University’s MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults. In January 2016, the Library of Congress, Every Child A Reader, and the Children’s Book Council appointed Gene Luen Yang as the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature.

This is a free, all-ages event. Bar opens at 7, event begins at 7:30pm.

MA – Hulk Returns Celebration

Press Release:

Hulk Out at That’s Entertainment! Marvel Comics mainstay Bruce Banner, a.k.a. The Incredible Hulk, was “killed” almost two years ago, felled by the Avenger’s archer, Hawkeye in the CIVIL WAR II series. But super-heroes rarely stay dead for long, and Bruce Banner finally returns in AVENGERS #684, on sale Wednesday March 14th!

“Bruce Banner is back,” Marvel announces. “He’s angry. And you’ve never seen a Hulk this angry before. The iconic goliath officially returns in all his green glory… Bruce Banner, unprovoked and unchecked, will take you on a frightening adventure as he battles to save the universe.”

Worcester’s That’s Entertainment, the Eisner-Award-winning pop culture emporium at the corner of Park Avenue and Lois Lane, is gearing up to celebrate the occasion in a big way on March 14th from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. They’re calling their event a “Hulk-out.” There’s fun for all ages, and the public is invited.
First, you’ll be able to get a photo of yourself holding one of the most sought-after comic books of all.

“We have a Hulk #1,” reveals store Marketer, Sorana Gatej, “and we’re giving fans a photo-op with it!”

“It’s a nice original copy of Incredible Hulk #1 from 1962,” continues store Manager Ken Carson, “graded at 4.0, or Very Good Plus. Some people may not realize that the Hulk was actually gray, not green, in his first appearance. Comics like this are artifacts of a different era, before super-heroes dominated the mainstream. First issues for the early Marvel heroes have become like museum pieces as time goes by!”

The issue will be put out for sale on the Saturday following the event, but for Wednesday night everyone can commemorate a moment with it for posterity. People who post their Hulk #1 photos to social media, and tag and like That’s Entertainment, will be eligible for a $5.00 store credit slip, which they will be able to retrieve starting Friday, March 16th.

There will also be a cosplay contest. Contestants are encouraged to dress as their favorite comic book superhero or villain to compete for one of three top prizes: $100, $50, or $25 in store credit! Photos will be taken of each participating cosplayer and posted on Facebook. Winners will be determined by That’s Entertainment staff members. Winners will be contacted after the event, and will also be announced on Facebook.

Comic artists Derek Rook and Laith Alabbad will be on hand drawing free sketches of the Hulk and related characters for fans.

Derek Rook has provided artwork for such notable works as Lucio Fulci’s Gates of Hell and Zombie, The Dead, Deadworld, and Gore Shriek. Under his comic book company label, Rough House Publishing, Derek plans to release his creator-owned titles, Beautiful Worcester and Angelduster. Although Derek works on numerous horror-related titles, he also passionately draws superheroes.

Artist Laith Alabbad has worked on various independent projects in storyboards, book illustrations and comics. He’s worked with independent self-published comic creators on a book called The All New Union! He is currently working on a personal project called Karbala.
