WA – Fire!! The Zora Neale Hurston Story Signing

Cartoonist Peter Bagge appears at the Elliott Bay Book Company on Saturday, March 25th at 7:00 PM

The author of the New York Times-bestselling graphic novel “Woman Rebel: The Margaret Sanger Story” returns with another extraordinary account of a woman way ahead of her time. In his newest biography “Fire!! The Zora Neale Hurston Story”, cartoonist Peter Bagge delves into the world of Zora Neale Hurston: the critically-acclaimed novelist and folklorist who challenged the norms of what was expected of an African American woman in early 20th century society. With a skilled cartooning hand, Bagge turns what could be a rote biography into a bold and dazzling graphic novel, creating a story as vibrant as the life itself.

PETER BAGGE is the Harvey Award-winning author of the acclaimed 1990s alternative comic series Hate starring slacker hero Buddy Bradley, and a regular contributor to Reason magazine. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York City, he got his start in comics in the R. Crumb-edited magazine Weirdo. “Fire!! The Zora Neale Hurston Story” is Bagge’s second book with Drawn & Quarterly after 2013’s “Woman Rebel: The Margaret Sanger Story”, which was reviewed twice in the New York Times, and appeared on the YALSA Great Graphic Novel For Teens list and the Amelia Bloomer Project list of the Best Feminist Books for Young Readers. Bagge lives in Seattle with his wife Joanne, daughter, and three cats.

Cartoonist Peter Bagge and more appear at WORD on Thursday, October 24th, 2013 at 7:00 pm!

Press Release:

Join us for a night of reading and storytelling in honor of activist Margaret Sanger. Featuring a presentation from cartoonist Peter Bagge, author of Woman Rebel: The Margaret Sanger Story, the evening will also include writer Thomas Page McBee, Karolina Waclawiak (How to Get Into the Twin Palms) and pro-voice activist Kassi Underwood.

In his signature cartoony, rubbery style, Bagge presents the life of the birth-control activist, educator, nurse, mother, and protofeminist from her birth in the late nineteenth century to her death after the invention of the birth control pill. He creates a fast-paced portrait of a trailblazer whose legacy as the founder of Planned Parenthood is still incredibly relevant, important, and inspiring.

Thomas Page McBee is a “masculinity expert” for VICE and writes the column “Self-Made Man” for the Rumpus. His essays and reportage have appeared in the New York Times, The Atlantic online, Salon, and Buzzfeed, where he is a regular contributor on gender issues. Man Alive, his manuscript about violence, forgiveness, and what makes a man won the Mary Tanenbaum nonfiction award from the San Francisco Foundation and was a finalist for the 2012 Bakeless literary prize. He is currently an editor at PolicyMic and at work on a book about forgiveness.

Kassi Underwood is an award-winning writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic online, The New York Daily News, The Rumpus, The Days of Yore, Publishers Weekly, Exhale’s Pro-Voice blog, and elsewhere. She hosts The Freerange Nonfiction Reading Series at Lolita Bar, and is one of many leaders in the pro-voice movement.

Karolina Waclawiak is the author of How to Get Into the Twin Palms, the essays editor of the Believer, and is working on a second novel and several screenplays, including one in development.
