The massive event, which will be held in Providence at the Rhode Island Convention Center and Dunkin Donuts Center from September 8-10, 2017, will treat attendees to three unforgettable days featuring a celebration of Hasbro’s powerful characters and stories, including live interactive experiences, exclusive products, talent appearances, panels and much more.
From bringing the first action figure to life with G.I. Transformers Prime: Ultimate Bumblebee DVD featuring action-packed Bumblebee animated adventures!

I was 10 years old when Hasbro brought the Transformers to life. A true ‘Generation One’ kid, I still know every word to the original cartoon theme song. I remember the excitement I felt when assembling a new action figure, and the devastation of being handed a Gobot. Oh, the horror! Having mixed feelings about the recent big screen film franchise, and hoping to revisit a bit of my youth, I jumped at the opportunity to review Transformers Prime: Ultimate Bumblebee.
Here is the official lowdown on this new DVD:

Beloved by kids and legions of fans worldwide, BUMBLEBEE is a dedicated warrior and a scout who serves as part of the elite squad lead by OPTIMUS PRIME. Though he may be one of the smallest and youngest of the TRANSFORMERS, don’t let that fool you. Time and time again, this AUTOBOT proves that he has the bravery to fight for what is right and the tenacity to throw himself into action to battle against his opponents no matter where they appear.”
The DVD is a collection of what they have deemed the “four best Bumblebee adventures from the Transformers Prime lore.” Clearly, I had been out of the loop for quite some time. Lore? Canon? I’ve missed so much! I decided to watch all four episodes first, and then I did some research in order to catch up on the many incarnations the Transformers have had since last I watched. I have to say, I enjoyed it more than I expected to. For an animated series seemingly targeted at kids, the action sequences were fairly on target for an adult audience. With so many SAT words and tech terms being tossed about, even the show’s dialogue seems to favor a more mature audience. I am absolutely okay with that. Kids can still follow along, maybe not understanding every joke, but worst case scenario they stand to expand their vocabularies.
Visually, for its time (the series began its run in 2010) Transformers Prime is remarkable. The CGI allowed for seamless transformations of the Autobots and Decepticons, morphing them instantly into their alter-ego vehicles and planes. Light and shadow reflected off of their metal exteriors just as you imagine it should. The CGI truly brings the cartoon to life, giving them “eyebrows”, so to speak, in order to show more emotion in their facial expressions. At times, it felt more like watching an actual movie than a weekly animated series. This is certainly not the Transformers of my youth!
One complaint? Well, it’s not so much a complaint as it is a personal opinion: What is up with Arcee? I don’t want to come off sounding like some sort of crazed feminist, but I had hoped enough years had passed to where we could stop sexually objectifying a machine. I’m glad they ditched her original pink and white color scheme, going instead with a sleek blue and black over chrome look. Facially, she resembles the rest of the Transformers a bit more now. She’s pretty hard core. That is, until you realize that, once again, she has been given a teeny tiny waist line, conveniently colored breast plates, and so forth. Yes, they decided to make a female Transformer, but does she have to move so dainty and fluid. Her front cycle wheel always leaves her standing off-center towards one hip; a convenient way to accentuate her curves. Even Marilyn Monroe had one heel filed down to make her shoes uneven, resulting in her signature tail-wag as she walked. But, Arcee is a machine. I don’t want her to be the Marilyn Monroe of motorcycles. I want her to be the Michelle Rodriguez of motorcycles! But, I digress.
The episodes in question all highlight the sympathetic and loveable, Bumblebee. Like many great fictional characters before him, Bumblebee represents what is good in all of us. You don’t have to be the biggest or the strongest in order to be the bravest. In fact, you may not be perfect at all; Bumblebee has no voice, remember? But he serves as a reminder that strength overcomes all challenges. I can’t believe I’m waxing philosophical about a Transformer. But, yes, after watching Transformers Prime: Ultimate Bumblebee, I can honestly say that I would rank him right up there with my other favorite underdogs: the Hobbits. All in all, I enjoyed viewing this collection. (Side note: As much as I get a kick out of the Transformers, I can’t help but yell at the TV in frustration over how much was ‘borrowed’ from the Avengers. This goes back to the very inception of our Autobot friends. I understand that over time, all of Marvel has repeated itself, just as D.C. has done within their plane of existence. There has even been an Avengers/Transformers cross-over comic series. Tesseract vs. AllSpark. It’s impossible for me to ignore the similarities between the Avengers movie and the, in my opinion much inferior, Transformers: Dark of the Moon. However, watching Ultimate Bumblebee has peaked my interest, and I am willing to give the weekly series the benefit of the doubt.)
As I mentioned, the story lines were more mature than I had anticipated, and they were delivered by a talented cast including Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, Josh Keaton, Jeffrey Combs (I could listen to him talk all day), Kevin Michael Richardson, Will Friedle, Sumalee Montano, Ernie Hudson (heck yeah!), Markie Post, and Steve Blum. Interestingly enough, on the series Transformers Prime, Cullen and Welker reprise the roles of Optimus Prime and Megatron, after having voiced the characters, respectively, in the series I grew up with from the 1980s.
On February 25, 2014, Shout! Factory Kids, in collaboration with Hasbro Studios, will release Transformers Prime: Ultimate Bumblebee Special DVD to Walmart stores everywhere. It will be available to own for an affordable price (MSRP $9.99) and if your kids like action–especially if they’re Bumblebee fans, you may want to check it out. Transformers Prime, the animated series, airs on the HUB TV network; check your local listings if you are interested in keeping up with the show.

KAIJUDO: RISE OF THE DUEL MASTERSTM
Produced by Hasbro Studios and currently airing on The Hub TV Network in the U.S., KAIJUDO: RISE OF THE DUEL MASTERSTM is a new animated action-fantasy series based on the popular trading card game from WIZARDS OF THE COAST, a Hasbro subsidiary. The WIZARDS OF THE COAST booth (#3249) will be dedicated to this new property at Comic-Con for fans to experience throughout the show. At Comic-Con, the KRE-O brand from Hasbro boldly goes where no one has gone before. Based on the upcoming STAR TREK sequel from Paramount Pictures and directed by J.J. Abrams, the KRE-O STAR TREK line, under license from CBS Consumer Products, features a variety of vehicles from the movie along with fun KREON figures based on iconic STAR TREK characters. Fans will be able to see the KRE-O STAR TREK U.S.S. ENTERPRISE set and select KREON figures for the first time in person at the Hasbro Comic-Con booth beginning on Preview Night, July 11.
In a groundbreaking move for entertainment based building sets, Hasbro teamed up with J.J. Abrams, director of the upcoming STAR TREK sequel, to create a KRE-O STAR TREK stop motion digital short. The digital short, produced by Bad Robot, features icons of the STAR TREK saga in a stand-alone storyline and will premiere at a later date in partnership with Paramount Pictures. Fans can view a teaser trailer now on the KRE-O brand Youtube channel at www.Youtube.com/KREO or at the convention in the Hasbro booth.
STAR TREK will mark the third major entertainment property to be featured in the KRE-O line. Hasbro successfully introduced the KRE-O brand in 2011 with building sets featuring its globally popular TRANSFORMERS characters and in 2012 introduced the KRE-O BATTLESHIP line. MY LITTLE PONY
The MY LITTLE PONY brand, a pop-culture phenomenon from Hasbro, gallops into Comic-Con in 2012 with a hit animated series, new toys and an extensive line of licensed goods. Featuring a unique sense of humor, memorable characters and endearing stories about the power of friendship, the MY LITTLE PONY FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC animated series, produced by Hasbro Studios and airing on The Hub in the U.S., has amassed a fan following as varied as the ponies of PONYVILLE. Comic-Con attendees will be able to snap photos of a life-sized PINKIE PIE character statue, gaze at a giant MY LITTLE PONY cast mural emblazoned on an entire wall within the Hasbro booth and get a look at an extensive line-up of current MY LITTLE PONY toys, licensed apparel and more. The MY LITTLE PONY brand will also unveil the winning design from its “Design a MY LITTLE PONY” contest with the winning figure on display beginning on Preview Night.
To transport fans to and from the convention in style, The Hub will transform the interior and exterior of one car of the San Diego trolley system to create a magical MY LITTLE PONY FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC experience showcasing some of the series’ characters. The train will be styled as the Friendship Express train, which is featured in the popular animated series. Superheroes abound at Comic-Con every year but not all are the same. Some are strong, some are fast, some are…blue, fuzzy and use their powers of observation to solve problems! Hasbro and its PLAYSKOOL brand are excited to celebrate the upcoming launch of its FLYING SUPER GROVER 2.0 toy. Eric Jacobson, the man behind Super Grover 2.0, will be available for a special autograph session on Thursday, July 12 from 9:30-10:30am in the Hasbro booth. Lucky fans will have the chance to meet Eric for an autograph and pose for a picture with Super Grover 2.0. Tickets for the session will be distributed in the Hasbro booth on Wednesday, July 11 during Preview Night while supplies last (a ticket is required to participate). FLYING SUPER GROVER 2.0 is one of the most talked about preschool toys for the upcoming holiday season and comes to life when kids pick him up and “fly” him around the room. His arms will rise as if he’s flying and he will let children know whether he’s “Going up” or “Going down!”
The Force is strong with Hasbro at Comic-Con International as the Company celebrates the recent launch of its popular STAR WARS FIGHTER PODS toy line, new action figures, the epic Course of the Force Lightsaber relay and more! To celebrate the highly collectible STAR WARS FIGHTER PODS line, visitors to the Hasbro booth will be able to pose in front of a unique display featuring DARTH VADER and CHEWBACCA statues in their ‘Micro Heroes, Mega Battles’ FIGHTER PODS expression as well as a massive FIGHTER POD in the shape of a DEATH STAR filled with thousands of figures from the new line. Towering over all of Comic-Con and the Hasbro booth is a 17-foot tall OPTIMUS PRIME statue in the styling of the TRANSFOMERS PRIME animated series – and he has a lot to celebrate. The hit animated series produced by Hasbro Studios currently airing on The Hub in the U.S. recently wrapped its second season for which it won two 2012 Daytime Emmy© Awards, for a total of four since it first premiered in 2010. Hasbro also “rolled out” an extensive line of action figures based on the series and fans will be able to see the full 2012 lineup of TRANSFORMERS PRIME figures in both robot and vehicle mode in an extensive booth presentation including an intricate TRANSFORMERS PRIME diorama featuring space bridges, VEHICONS and more! TRANSFORMERS RESCUE BOTS
TRANSFORMERS RESCUEBOTS, a new animated series from Hasbro Studios and toy line for younger TRANSFORMERS fans, celebrates its first Comic-Con by offering attendees the chance to meet HEATWAVE, one of the series’ characters in the Hasbro booth. The HEATWAVE costume character will be in the booth as well as at “The Hub Headquarters at the Broken Yolk” at various times throughout the convention. The TRANSFORMERS RESCUE BOTS series, currently in its first season, airs on The Hub in the U.S.
TRANSFORMERS: THE RIDE-3D
The TRANSFORMERS brand also saw the opening of its very first thrill ride in the U.S. in 2012 with the recent launch of TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D at Universal Studios Hollywood. To celebrate the ride at Comic-Con, fans will have the chance to receive limited edition TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D commemorative launch posters beginning at 6:00pm in the Hasbro booth while supplies last.
TRANSFORMERS: FALL OF CYBERTRON
In celebration of the upcoming, highly anticipated and critically heralded TRANSFORMERS: Fall of Cybertron video game from Activision, available August 21, 2012, Hasbro will welcome game designers to the Hasbro booth at 10:00am on Friday, July 13 to present a look at game play. Action figures based on the CYBERTRONIAN style of the video game (and featured in the brand’s GENERATIONS line) will be on display in the Hasbro booth. For the first time at New York Comic Con, Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS) will attend the convention at the Javits Convention Center in New York City from October 13-16 to present many of its iconic brands and meet with fans. Please join me for Pop Candy’s Comic-Con meetup July 24 at 5:30 p.m. The whole shebang will take place at Wine Steals, an awesome (and convenient) wine/cocktail bar located at 793 and 795 J St. in San Diego. We’ll be partying on the rooftop patio.
A note about the poster: Yes, it’s really in 3-D! You can see it on the blog, but it looks especially awesome when blown up full size. Here’s a PDF of the full-size version, in case you’d like to print it. All meetup attendees will receive a pair of Pop Candy 3-D glasses as a special souvenir.
