UK – Cloud Hotel Launch Party

Julian Hanshaw appears at Gosh Comics to launch his magical new graphic novel Cloud Hotel and Pho: The Artwork, a celebration of Vietnamese cuisine for Pho (our local joint, just around the corner on Wardour Street.) So get your best Friday togs and get down to Soho on the 6th of July for 7 till 9 pm!

Cloud Hotel:

Remco knows he is special. He was chosen. God took a shine to him, after a bright light in a clear northern sky brought Remco to the incredible Cloud Hotel, a wondrous place that he never wants to leave. But Remco has outstayed his welcome… and it’s time to check out.

We’ve loved Julian’s work ever since he won the Observer/Cape Graphic Short Story prize all the way back in 2008. Tackling difficult subjects with a lightness of touch and eye to the magical they are always moving and thought-provoking experience and we’re sure this one will be no different.

Also launching on the night: Pho: The Artwork, collecting 10 years of images for the Vietnamese food chain (who are generously providing some Vietnamese beer to help the night go with a swing!)

UK – Dull Margaret Signing + Q&A

Actor Jim Broadbent and cartoonist Dix appear in conversation with Paul Gravett on Tuesday, 26th June at 7:30 PM at Gosh Comics.

The Academy Award-winning actor, Jim Broadbent and Guardian cartoonist Dix have joined forces to create their first graphic novel, Dull Margaret from Fantagraphics.

Dull Margaret was inspired by Dulle Griet, a 16th-century painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. She is a damaged soul, struggling to navigate a perplexing world. She’s disliked and shunned by her neighbours, and is soon sent to live far away from civilization where she begins to brew her own potions, wishing for friendship and fortune. But, she needs to be wary of what she wishes for, as her magic propels her into a number of dark twists and turns.

Intense and humorous, Dull Margaret is one of the most anticipated and unexpected graphic novels of 2018.

Jim Broadbent is a highly-acclaimed British actor who has starred in many films and television features, including Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. He was inspired to write Dull Margaret after becoming fixated on the mysterious landscapes and marshes of Lincolnshire.

Dix is best known for his cartoons and illustrations which are featured in the Guardian, as well as co-creating KLAXON, another graphic novel.

UK – Art of SOLO Signing

Press Release:

To celebrate the release of the The Art of Solo A Star Wars Story by Phil Szostak from Abrams Books, Gosh Comics hosts Vincent Jenkins, Jack Dudman, Will Htay, Adam Brockbank, Glyn Dillon, Julian Caldow, Chris Caldow, Moley Sole, Paul Marsh, and Neil Ellis for a very special panel discussion and signing here, Tuesday 12th June, 7.30-9pm!

Solo: A Star Wars Story is the second non-series film to help fill out the Star Wars universe, bringing to life hitherto unseen worlds and technologies, and reimagining familiar places and faces (and certain iconic spaceships) for an earlier time. Before filming starts, heavy lifting begins in the design departments, with countless reams of art being distilled down to a final vision for the film.

“The Art of Solo: A Star Wars Story reveals, for the first time, the design evolution of each new fantastical set, otherworldly machine, and unforgettable character in the film. Packed with hundreds of spectacular images, including production paintings, concept art and sketches, storyboards, and matte paintings, The Art of Solo: A Star Wars Story is the definitive guide to the art of the film—and a must-have keepsake for fans.”

Lucky for us plenty of the talented folks behind the scenes are based right here in the UK, and we’re lucky enough to be hosting a number of them for a Q&A session and signing! We’ll have Vincent Jenkins, Jack Dudman, Will Htay, Adam Brockbank, Glyn Dillon, Julian Caldow, Chris Caldow, Moley Sole, Paul Marsh & Neil Ellis all here in-store to talk about their process working on the film, as well as take your questions. There will also be an opportunity to get copies of The Art of Solo A Star Wars Story signed by this incredible roster of talent.

Things kick off on Tuesday 12th June from 7.30-9 pm. We’ll be closing the store at 7pm for a brief set-up, reopening at around 7.20pm to let people take their seats.

Seats will be available on a first come, first served basis, and if past attendance is any indication we’d recommend getting here to queue by 7pm.
