A Certified Copic Designer will give a bare-bones introduction, explain how the color system works, how to find discount prices and hints on how to start building up your studio collection. Guest artists Michael Lark and Justin Greenwood will discuss their takes on working with writer Greg Rucka, and he with them. Michael Lark has worked with Greg on multiple occasions including Gotham Central, Punisher and their creator owned Image title Lazarus. Justin Greenwood is currently working with Greg on Stumptown. Hear from both an artist’s and writer’s perspective as to when they know there is a good creative match on a project and why. These creators will discuss their projects and the creative process. Filmmakers Tom Wyrsch and Strephon Taylor (Remembering Playland at the Beach”, Sutros: The Palace at Lands End”) will present highlights from their brand new feature length film, “Uncle Forry’s Ackermansions” The film is a vast tour of Forrest J Ackerman’s, now gone, Los Angeles mansion-museum starting with the original Ackermansion and ending with the Acker-mini-mansion. Archival footage with hundreds photographs make up a fascinating video tour. Joining the panel will be Tom Khamis (LASFS Historian), Audience Q&A inlcuded. – Room D

Comics University (Panel)

“Comics University”, a discussion co-moderated by panelists Ed Luce (Professor in the Comics MFA Program at California College of the Arts and creator of Wuvable Oaf Comics) and Maia Kobabe (CCA Comics MFA student and creator of “The Thief’s Tale” comics). Ed and Maia, along with both undergraduate and Comics MFA grads, will discuss how comics fit into the diverse undergraduate program at CCA, the myriad of professional reasons one might pursue a Master’s Degree in comics. – Room D

Doug Sneyd – 50 Years of Playboy (Panel)

Doug has worked for Playboy magazine since the early 1964, many remember lovely scantily (and even non-) clad “Sneyd” girls and the one-line jokes he did thru the years. Japan’s Heroes and Monsters (Panel)

August Ragone and his Kaiju crew will be hosting FM’s panel that will feature Kenpachiro Satsuma (Godzilla, ’84-’95), Bin Furuya (Ultraman), and Daisuke Ban (Kikaida, Inazuman). Each actor will tell their stories of how they came to embody these incredible roles, as well as take questions from the audience. – Room A

It isn’t your impressive artwork alone that will land you a job or the position you’re seeking, but the presentation of your artwork in your portfolio. Veteran illustrator and painter Dan Brereton will be on hand to discuss your artwork in a friendly and constructive group critique, as well as the presentation of your work. CBLDF Comic Code (Panel)

60 years ago, comics were put on trial in a nationally televised Senate subcommittee hearing that had shattering repercussions for this great American art form. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund presents the shocking history of moral panic that led to this historic hearing and the birth of the Comics Code Authority, which regulated the medium’s content for more than 50 years. CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein tells the tale at this CBLDF presentation. – Room D

BigWOW ComicFest Art Auction (Panel)
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
This will be your opportunity to bid on and win pieces of original collectible art, hand drawn, by numerous guests who are attending the show. All of the art will be on display in the exhibitor hall, museum gallery, throughout the day Saturday and will be available to be bid on in a blind auction format.

Come to the live auction portion of the event to bid on various pieces of art created specifically for the auction by the likes of Frank Cho, Michael Lark, Alfonso Azpiri, Frank Cirocco, Rich Koslowski and some published pieces contributed by Charlie Adlard, Justin Greenwood and many others! A number of the convention’s guests will be on-hand to mingle at this social event and to encourage fans to bid high on their works of art! – Room B

There will be a cash bar setup in the auction room for those interested. This should be a lively and entertaining event for all. Both cash and credit cards will be accepted for your art auction purchases.

Presented just as Creature Features was back in the early eighties, but on stage rather than on television. Drawing The Walking Dead (Panel)

Artist, Charlie Adlard, and inker Stefano Gaudiano discuss what it is like to create the images behind the hugely successful comic and tv series The Walking Dead. Charlie will explain how his art style has evolved during his tenure on the book and how having an inker allows him to work differently now. Stefano, being the newest addition to the team, shares his experiences of inking Charlie and how this project differs from his vast number of other previous collaborations. They’ll discuss the controversial “All Out War” storyline and how working on a near bi-weekly schedule for a year affected how they worked. Josh and Blair will talk about how they got the job (and other behind the scenes stories), meeting Doctor Who cast and crew, chat about Who-fandom in general, and do a Q and A if the audience wishes. – Room C

Jack Kirby is the creator or co-creator of The X-Men, Hulk Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, Captain America, The Avengers, Darkseid, Mister Miracle and hundreds more. He was probably the most prolific comics artist ever and almost every artist is inspired by him. Artists will discuss which comics led them to follow Jack, what panels they have learned from, and how hard it is to make that Kirby Krackle look right. – Room C

Native Americans in Comics (Panel)

Ever since Native American people began drawing on rock walls, they’ve been part of the comic book universe. However, stereotypes persist due to the lack of Native artists or writers employed by the mainstream comics industry. Now, these artists have taken initiative and formed The Indigenous Narratives Collective and INC Comics. INC’s Arigon Starr (“Super Indian”) and Lee Francis IV (“Pueblo Jones”) will discuss the state of Native American comics. Moderated by UC Santa Cruz’s writer/poet/playwright Dr. Carolyn Dunn. – Room D

The idea that there may be universes other than our own has long been a staple of fantasy and science fiction. Now physicists are telling us that there may be some truth in this idea. How much is fact and how much is fiction? Are there other universe? If there are, how similar are they to our own? Do universes “split,” and if so, how? Would it be possible to travel between them. What are some of the ways these ideas have been explored in fiction — and what avenues are still ripe. – Room D

We are pleased to include in our 2012 FCBD Celebration the great Mr. Ernie Hudson. Ernie is best known as one of the stars of our childhood favorite movie series Ghostbusters and teen angst movie The Crow! He’ll be at Packrat from 11am-5pm signing autographs and taking pictures. We will be hosting an exclusive meet and greet with a limited number of fans being able to spend some quality one on on time with Ernie!

Our artist alley will be overflowing, oozing with talent from:

Dawn Best – Dawn Best was discovered by comic book artist/writer Ken Penders when he requested she submit artwork for an original script.[1] Her premier issue of Sonic was issue #101 (2001), and her last to date was issue #145 (2004). After leaving Archie, Best remained active in the comic book community by appearing as both guest and attendee of conventions and holding annual charity auctions of original artwork. She has since been credited with contributing to several other graphic novels as both artist and writer, including original web serials Sylvanna and Heißdampfreaktor. In 2010, she began production on her independently published graphic novel series, VARULV, which became the premier comic book released by her own Gloryhound Network in February 2011.

Dirk Manning – Dirk Manning is the writer/creator of NIGHTMARE WORLD and TALES OF MR. RHEE for Image/Shadowline Comics, the author of the “WRITE OR WRONG” column at Newsarama, and the co-creator of FARSEEKER at ACT-I-VATE with Len O’Grady.He loves life but hates ninjas. Cthulhu is his homeboy.

Matthew Swift – Matthew Swift is an illustrator, with a background in graphic design and painting. He works with the top companies in the entertainment and comic book industries. Matthew’s work has been seen by millions worldwide on Forbes TV, G4TV, TechTV, and other networks. His work can also be found in games available for the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, Sony Playstation 3, and Microsoft Xbox 360 video game systems.

Scott D. Simmons – Scott D Simmons is a comic book and sketch card artist and his work includes Star Wars, Voltron (Moonstone), Hack/Slash (Image), The Dead Cell (Arcana), Wannabez, Halloween Man and Mr. Jigsaw. Scott D. Simmons is the creator of Angelwolf Comics and Knights of P.O.W.E.R. In addition to his comic work, Scott works as a news and convention photo contributor for Comic Related.

Jamie Snell – Jamie Snell studied illustration and graduated from Columbus College of Art and Design. Jamie has been working on and off as a freelance illustrator for over 10 + years. Some of his credits include various sketch card sets from Topps (Star Wars: CW Movie and Seasons 1&2, Galaxy 4&5, ESB Widescreen, Terminator Salvation, Heroes Season 2, Indiana Jones Masterpieces & Crystal Skull, Lord of the Rings Masterpieces 2), 5finity: Voltron sketch cards, IDW Publishing: Beastwars Source book, Image Comics: Popgun Anthology Vol.1 , and various other inking projects. Last year Jamie had the privilege of producing two exclusive Star Wars posters for Lucas Films, Ltd, and Acme Archives: Celebrations V (Official Star Wars Convention) official print and the 30th Anniversary of Empire Strikes Back.

Todd Beistel & Doug Hufford – While still in high school, Todd self published Eye of the Probe, a comic anthology. He then went on to study illustration and graduate from CCAD. While in college, Todd wrote and illustrated Lost Souls, a graphic short story. Lost Souls was published by Hunter Productions.As years passed, Todd’s interests evolved into fine art and graphic design. As a dedicated artist, he has been featured in venues throughout Ohio. On several occasions, he has contributed illustrations to accompany columnists such as Dave Barry and Click and Clack. Doug also studied at CCAD, but strangely evolved into a writer as time passed. He became known for his outlandish movie reviews during the late 90′s. He made his home at Bumscorner.com, and often got picked up nationally by IMdB and Ain’t It Cool News. Currently they are collaborating on the webcomic sensation, Yuri the Gypsy Hunter. Yuri the Gypsy Hunter is a decades spanning epic concerning an orphan, a rock band, and lots of teenage angst.

JD Larabee – JD Larabee is an Ohio native who has been drawing freelance cartoons, comic strips and comic books for over 20 years. J.D. is most know for his gag strips and art in the indie comic book ‘Johnnie Zombie’. JD has provided the artwork for many children’s books, and done animation work on several web series. Most recently his work was part of the hilariously infamous and politically incorrect ‘Uncle Pete’s Play time’, as well as numerous shorts and character designs for Mr. Frights.

Molly Durst – Molly Durst is a professional, award winning graphic and web designer. She is a lifetime learner who is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in web development, and has earned a scholarship from the Print Industry of Northern Kentucky and Ohio to pursue this goal. Molly’s love of books began early (both of her parents are teachers). This passion for book arts drives her to self-publish her own stories. Her love of indie media and subculture attracts her to the bizarre world of small press comic books. Molly’s work can be found here.

Mark LeMieux – Mark LeMieux is an artist with the innate ability for creative problem solving and the artistic skills of illustration, sculpture and acting. Mark has an Associate’s Degree in Industrial Design Technology from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where he was an Honors Graduate while being employed full time. He is also the owner, director and lead artist of the freelance art company Platypus Productions, that specializes in sculpture, design work, pop culture art, comic illustration, film making, script writing and special effects make-up. Joshua Peters – Joshua Peters returned to CCAD in 2005 and began his studies under the tutelage of many talented instructors including C.F. Payne, Andy Bawidamann and Dave Groff. While he was there, Josh was showcased in the 9th, 10th, and 11th Art of Illustration shows presented by CCAD. His incredibly cool “Over the Line” piece even brought home the C.F. Payne Judge’s Pick award at the 11th. Not only that, but Josh’s “Foo Fighters Poster” was exhibited in New York City at the annual Society of Illustrators Student Exhibition in the spring of 2008. Seth LyonsSeth Lyons is a professional graphic artist Absolute Impressions Inc., a Lewis Center based print shop. He’s also illustrated comics for a local publishing company, working on Stiletto Heights and Johnnie Zombie. After sitting in front of computers all day, designing for companies like Verizon, WCOL, and others, he decided it was time to return to basics. Painting the characters he loved in his youth and still today; Seth creates and sells highly detailed paintings of beloved comic, movie, and television characters. Also known for his love of insane collage pieces featuring hundreds of characters, Seth enjoys the time spent with his now growing family.

Max Ink – Max Ink is the creator of “Blink”, a comic book series about three friends– Blink, Sam and Hank–living, working and enjoying life in Columbus, Ohio. “Blink” has been published as a graphic novel, in mini comics, in comic book anthologies (including Ken Eppstein’s NIX Comics Quarterly) and from 2008-2010, it ran as a comic strip in the Short North Gazette. Mike Eshelman – Mike Eshelman has created his own unique art form bringing his love of the past with his creative and relaxing hobby of art. From music to video games, DEVO to Commodore 64, he’s a man of the 80′s. With hundreds of hours and thousands of beads, Mike creates 8-bit fused beads art masterpieces. Anime Boston 2011 Announces First Round of Guests

Anime Boston, the largest anime convention in New England, announced its first round of guests: Brothers Greg and Christopher Ayres, voice actress Brina Palencia as well as industry guest Jonathan Klein return to the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Mass. on April 22-24th.

Brina Palencia is an actress working in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. She has voiced numerous characters for anime and video games. Some of her anime highlights include: Natsuki in Summer Wars, Chibitalia in Hetalia, Ciel Pahntomhive in Black Butler, Holo in Spice and Wolf, Yumi Azusa in Soul Eater, Sora in Oh Edo Rocket, Rei Ayanami in Evangelion 1.0, Juliet in Romeo x Juliet, Miharu in Nabari No Ou,Tony Tony Chopper in One Piece, Tamama in Sgt. Frog, Ennis in Baccano, Mikoto in School Rumble, Georgie in Shin Chan, Eve in Black Cat, Moro and Zashikiwarashi in xxxHolic. In the land of gaming she can be heard as Mad Moxxi in Borderlands, Moogle/Dungeon Hero X in Final Fantasy Fables, the main player in Mushroom Men and The Maw, and various characters in Guitar Hero III and IV, Stunt Driver 2, Ghostbusters: The Video Game, Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Street Fighter 4.

She has also served as ADR Director for Moon Phase (eps 21-26), School Rumble, Black Blood Brothers, and xxxHOLiC (the movie and eps 1-8), Assistant ADR Director for Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, D Gray Man and Dragon Ball Kai, and Music Director for Sasami: Magical Girls Club, Negima!?, My Bride is a Mermaid, and Dragon Ball Kai.

On camera, you can see her as the co-host for GameStop TV alongside fellow voice actor, Chris Burnett.

Christopher Ayres has been working professionally in theatre, television and film since the age of 6. Currently a voice actor for ADV Films, FUNimation Entertainment and Seraphim Digital Studios. Ayres is also an ADR Director for Amusement Park Media. His first project at studio was the hit anime musical comedy The Nerima Daikon Brothers. His other voice acting roles are Kei Kourono in Gantz, Suitengu in Speed Grapher, Von Kampher in Trinity Blood, Hayashimizu in Full Metal Panic? Fummofu, Johnny in One Piece, Sid in Devil May Cry, Yusuf Ali Mesa in Yugo the Negotiator and Koji in Godanner.

Greg Ayres can be heard rockin’ his way through conventions and animated series alike. He can be heard as the loud-mouthed Hideki in Nerima Daikon Brothers, Koyuki, singing with the band in Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, or just as himself on the DJ circuit. He also voiced Kaoru Hitachiin in Ouran High School Host club, and Abe in Big Windup. Other recent works include JR. in Xenosaga , Roan in Ragnorok The Animation, Yamazaki in Welcome to the NHK, Nowy, in Glass Fleet, and Yukinojoh Tohyama in The Wallflower.

The once fanboy turned VA started working in anime a little over six years ago. In his first two years in the business, he landed the roles of Son Goku in Saiyuki and Kaworu Nagisa in the Director’s Cut of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Other roles include Chrono in Chrono Crusade, Negi Springfield in Negima, Heihachi in Samurai 7, Jr. in Xenosaga: The Animation, Satoshi Hiwatari in DNAngel, Pope Alessandro XVIII in Trinity Blood, Tsuyoshi in Kodocha, Leo in Ghost Stories, Tsujido in Speed Grapher, and Gau Ban in Shadow Skill.

Jonathan Klein is the Vice-President of New Generation Pictures, Inc., based in Beverly Hills. His company produces the English language versions of some of the most popular anime and videogames in the United States and Japan. New Generation Pictures has worked on hundreds of different projects, including such popular anime as; Hellsing, Hellsing Ultimate, Gun x Sword, Kamichu, R.O.D the TV, Ikki Tousen, NieA_7, 3×3 Eyes and many other titles. Jonathan has also directed of the English language versions of such anime titles as Ergo-Proxy, Haibane Renmei, Texhnolyze, Melody of Oblivion and Paranoia Agent.

Jonathan has also directed many video games including; Final Fantasy: The Crystal Bearers, Final Fantasy IV, Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals, Rune Factory 3, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, Final Fantasy; Chocobo’s Dungeon, Time Crisis 4, Dawn of Mana, Valkyrie Profile 2, and Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume and was also the English language producer on Street Fighter IV & Super Street Fighter IV as well as the highly anticipated Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

Beyond working as producer and director, Jonathan’s responsibilities also include scriptwriting, script adaptation and even working behind the microphone as a voice actor. Jonathan has voice acted in such anime & videogames as Final Fantasy IV, Star Ocean IV, Rune Factory 3, Ergo Proxy, Rumiko Takahashi Anthology, Kamichu, Girls Bravo, Gun x Sword, Burst Angel, Galaxy Railways and Beck.

Carro will also have a role in the upcoming TV series Caprica which is the spin off from Battlestar Galactica. Horror fans will be able to meet C.J. Graham who portrayed “Jason” in Friday the 13th. Additionally attendees can expect to see a large number of Comic Book Artists and Illustrators.
