Join us for an afternoon with cast members including Sherilyn Fenn, Dana Ashbrook, Josh Fadem, Harry Goaz, Michael Horse, Matthew Lillard, James Marshall, Kimmy Robertson, Ray Wise, and more from David Lynch and Mark Frost’s beloved series featuring an in-depth discussion, moderated by James Roday, about the old series, the new series and everything in between. MN – Asian America in Graphic Novels: An Evening with Gene Luen Yang

Award-winning Graphic Novelist GENE LUEN YANG appears at the Jeanne d’Arc Auditorium in Whitby Hall on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 6:30 PM.

GENE LUEN YANG began making comics and graphic novels in the fifth grade. In 2006 First Second Books published American Born Chinese, which became the first graphic novel to be nominated for a National Book Award and the first to win the American Library Association’s Printz Award. It also won an Eisner Award for Best Graphic Album.

In 2013, First Second Books released Boxers & Saints, Yang’s two-volume graphic novel about the Boxer Rebellion. Nominated for a National Book Award, this book also won the L.A. Times Book Prize.

Gene Yang has created a number of other comics, including Dark Horse Comics’ continuation of the popular Nickelodeon cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender and DC Comics’ Superman! In addition to cartooning, he teaches creative writing through Hamline University’s MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults, teaching alongside amazing authors like Anne Ursu, Gary Schmidt, Laura Ruby, Matt De La Pena, to name a few.

In January 2016, the Library of Congress, Every Child A Reader, and the Children’s Book Council appointed Gene Luen Yang the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature.

Co-hosted by the St. Catherine University – MLIS Program, St. Kate’s Library, Friends of the Libraries, Education Department, St. Catherine University MIPS Office, St. Kate’s ALA Student Chapter, Progressive Librarians Guild, Student Governance Organization, Endowed Mission Chairs, and Addendum Books.

CA – FCBD: Fresh Off the Boat Signing

To celebrate the release of the FRESH OFF THE BOAT FREE COMIC BOOK DAY special from Boom! Studios, FRESH OFF THE BOAT cast members Hudson Yang, Forrest Wheeler and Ian Chen will be appearing at The Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach on Saturday, May 6th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  On Sunday, May 7th, Hudson and Forrest will also be appearing at The Comic Bug in Culver City from noon to 2:00 p.m. The three young actors portray Eddie, Emery and Evan Huang on the hit ABC show and will be signing copies of the comic book tie-in at both store events.

Debuting with 10 million viewers, the critically acclaimed family comedy series Fresh Off the Boat (Tuesdays at 9pm on ABC) comes to the world of comics for Free Comic Book Day 2017! Fresh Off the Boat is the story of a Taiwanese-American family living in Orlando in the 1990s and comically explores themes of immigration, assimilation, and identity. BOOM! Studios teams with producers 20th Century Fox Television and the creative team of Fresh Off the Boat to capture the show’s authentic spirit and humor in comic form.

Introducing the the Legion of Dopeitude! Tying into the episode, “Pie vs. Cake” airing on May 2 at 9:00 p.m., this Free Comic Book Day special reveals the characters created by Eddie and Emery for a comic book contest on the television show! Pick up a copy of this book on Free Comic Book Day and see what they created!

“Fresh Off the Boat” Set in the mid-‘90s, 12-year-old hip-hop loving Eddie Huang (Hudson Yang) and his family are adjusting to their new lives in suburban Orlando. New schools, new friends, new neighbors, new traditions – yet still holding true to their family values and their continual pursuit of the American Dream.  Inspired by a true story, “Fresh Off the Boat” stars Randall Park as Louis, Constance Wu as Jessica, Hudson Yang as Eddie, Forrest Wheeler as Emery, Ian Chen as Evan, Lucille Soong as Grandma Huang, Chelsey Crisp as Honey and Ray Wise as Marvin.  “Fresh Off the Boat” was written by Nahnatchka Khan, who also serves as executive producer and showrunner. Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar are executive producers. The series is produced by 20th Century Fox Television for ABC.

Both days will feature thousands of free comics, dozens of creators and cosplayers and lots of fun for the whole family!
