Established in early 2012, three friends joined forces to expedite the success of their publishing goals. Artist Maris Wicks signs at Floating World Comics on Saturday June 29, 2013 from 4:30-6:00 pm!

RSVP on Facebook!

Maris Wicks has used her opposable thumbs to draw comics for Adhouse Books, Tugboat Press, and Spongebob Comics. When she’s not making comics, Maris works as a program educator at the New England Aquarium. She is an avid tool user and is particularly fond of bananas.

maris_primatesWith Primates: The Fearless Science of Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Biruté Galdikas, #1 New York Times Best-Selling author Jim Ottaviani returns with an action-packed account of the three greatest primatologists of the last century: Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Biruté Galdikas. These three ground-breaking researchers were all students of the great Louis Leakey, and each made profound contributions to primatology—and to our own understanding of ourselves.

Tackling Goodall, Fossey, and Galdikas in turn, and covering the highlights of their respective careers, Primates is an accessible, entertaining, and informative look at the field of primatology and at the lives of three of the most remarkable women scientists of the twentieth century. With charming and inviting illustrations by Maris Wicks, this is a nonfiction graphic novel with broad appeal.

Join us on Saturday June 29th from 4:30-6pm with artist Maris Wicks, to celebrate the release of this wonderful new graphic novel.

OR – Relish Signing

Lucy Knisley signs at Floating World Comics on Thursday, April 18, 2013 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm!

RSVP on Facebook!

Press Release:

Lucy Knisley loves food. The daughter of a chef and a gourmet, this talented young cartoonist comes by her obsession honestly. In her forthright, thoughtful, and funny memoir, Lucy traces key episodes in her life thus far, framed by what she was eating at the time and lessons learned about food, cooking, and life. Each chapter is bookended with an illustrated recipe—many of them treasured family dishes, and a few of them Lucy’s original inventions.

A welcome read for anyone who ever felt more passion for a sandwich than is strictly speaking proper, Relish is a graphic novel for our time: it invites the reader to celebrate food as a connection to our bodies and a connection to the earth, rather than an enemy, a compulsion, or a consumer product.

Lucy Knisley was born in New York City, raised in Rhinebeck, NY, and educated in Chicago. She has come home to roost in a tiny apartment in Manhattan, where she can be closer to her mom’s cooking. Her comics about life, food, travel and her adventures have gained her a devoted audience on the Internet, and she is now doing food comics for the magazine Saveur, who just sent her to Africa. Lucy’s first book, French Milk, is a travelogue about a trip to Paris. Relish is her most recent work.

OR – Task Force Rad Squad Signing

Caleb Goellner and Ryan Hill sign at Floating World Comics on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 from 6:00 till 8:00 pm! RSVP on Facebook!

Caleb Goellner is a blogger based in Portland, OR. He’s originally from Kansas City, where he first met Buster Moody, colorist of Bayou and Screamland: Death of the Party. The duo bonded with Portland illustrator Ryan Hill, artist and colorist of the Dark Horse Comics Avatar: The Last Airbender Free Comic Book Day 2013 issue, over a shared love of tokusatsu, manga, and LEGO. Task Force Rad Squad is the trio’s first team-up in an ongoing war against space monsters.

Earth’s legit-est teenage protectors have vanquished evil and are settling into sleep mode… until their new mentor accidentally unleashes a fresh batch of cosmic monsters, forcing them to engage evil once again as Task Force Rad Squad.

Task Force Rad Squad #1 is a 32-page, full-color calamity by writer Caleb Goellner, artist Buster Moody, and colorist Ryan Hill that introduces readers to three teens with radditude, their substance-addled “mentor” and the weary AI known as PhRANCIS. Powered by the specious cosmic tech of an extinct Space Wizard civilization, the team has inherited a universe of messes that they rightfully resent having to mop up. But who knows? Maybe their struggle to protect Earth from sentient birthday cakes and hot garbage will wind up teaching them the true meaning of friendship? Maybe??? Seriously, we have no idea!

Ron Regé, Jr. signs at Floating World Comics on Friday, December 14, from 5-7pm.

Press Release:

Ron Regé, Jr. is a very unusual yet accomplished storyteller whose work exudes a passionate moral, idealistic core that sets him apart from his peers. The Cartoon Utopia is his magnum opus, a unique work of comic art that, in the words of its author, “focuses on ideas that I’ve become intrigued by that stem from magical, alchemical, ancient ideas & mystery schools.” It’s part sci-fi, part philosophy, part visual poetry, and part social manifesto. Regé’s work exudes psychedelia, outsider rawness, and pure cartoonish joy.

In The Cartoon Utopia, “Utopians” of the future world are attempting to send messages through consciousness, outside of the constricts of time as we understand it. They live in a world of advanced collective consciousness and want to help us understand how to achieve what they have accomplished. They get together to perform this task in a way that evolved out of our current system of consuming information and entertainment. In other words, the opposite of television. Instead, these messages appear in the form of art, music and storytelling.

Ron is currently on tour playing drums with his band, Lavender Diamond. Before their show that evening at the Doug Fir he will be at Floating World from 5-7pm to celebrate the release of The Cartoon Utopia.

Bio info:

Ron Regé, Jr. is a cartoonist and musician from Plymouth, Massachusetts. He currently plays drums in the Los Angeles-based band Lavender Diamond. Regé began publishing his own minicomics while attending Massachusetts College of Art in 1988. He has since been published by Highwater Books, Fantagraphics, Buenaventura Press, McSweeney’s, and Drawn & Quarterly.
