Caleb Goellner and Ryan Hill sign at Floating World Comics on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 from 6:00 till 8:00 pm! RSVP on Facebook!

Caleb Goellner is a blogger based in Portland, OR. He’s originally from Kansas City, where he first met Buster Moody, colorist of Bayou and Screamland: Death of the Party. The duo bonded with Portland illustrator Ryan Hill, artist and colorist of the Dark Horse Comics Avatar: The Last Airbender Free Comic Book Day 2013 issue, over a shared love of tokusatsu, manga, and LEGO. Task Force Rad Squad is the trio’s first team-up in an ongoing war against space monsters.

Earth’s legit-est teenage protectors have vanquished evil and are settling into sleep mode… until their new mentor accidentally unleashes a fresh batch of cosmic monsters, forcing them to engage evil once again as Task Force Rad Squad.

Task Force Rad Squad #1 is a 32-page, full-color calamity by writer Caleb Goellner, artist Buster Moody, and colorist Ryan Hill that introduces readers to three teens with radditude, their substance-addled “mentor” and the weary AI known as PhRANCIS. Powered by the specious cosmic tech of an extinct Space Wizard civilization, the team has inherited a universe of messes that they rightfully resent having to mop up. But who knows? Maybe their struggle to protect Earth from sentient birthday cakes and hot garbage will wind up teaching them the true meaning of friendship? Maybe??? Seriously, we have no idea!

OR – Cartoon Utopia Signing

Ron Regé, Jr. signs at Floating World Comics on Friday, December 14, from 5-7pm.

Press Release:

Ron Regé, Jr. is a very unusual yet accomplished storyteller whose work exudes a passionate moral, idealistic core that sets him apart from his peers. The Cartoon Utopia is his magnum opus, a unique work of comic art that, in the words of its author, “focuses on ideas that I’ve become intrigued by that stem from magical, alchemical, ancient ideas & mystery schools.” It’s part sci-fi, part philosophy, part visual poetry, and part social manifesto. Regé’s work exudes psychedelia, outsider rawness, and pure cartoonish joy.

In The Cartoon Utopia, “Utopians” of the future world are attempting to send messages through consciousness, outside of the constricts of time as we understand it. They live in a world of advanced collective consciousness and want to help us understand how to achieve what they have accomplished. They get together to perform this task in a way that evolved out of our current system of consuming information and entertainment. In other words, the opposite of television. Instead, these messages appear in the form of art, music and storytelling.

Ron is currently on tour playing drums with his band, Lavender Diamond. Before their show that evening at the Doug Fir he will be at Floating World from 5-7pm to celebrate the release of The Cartoon Utopia.

Bio info:

Ron Regé, Jr. is a cartoonist and musician from Plymouth, Massachusetts. He currently plays drums in the Los Angeles-based band Lavender Diamond. Regé began publishing his own minicomics while attending Massachusetts College of Art in 1988. He has since been published by Highwater Books, Fantagraphics, Buenaventura Press, McSweeney’s, and Drawn & Quarterly.

The Secret Voice is an epic adventure comic like no other – visually, equal parts Fort Thunder and  Eurocomic, and narratively a study of action and reaction with tongue-in-cheek character work and a troubled, unreliable narrator. Mysticism, kung fu fighting, incredible monsters, and unique world-building all come together in an action-packed and explosive comic book. Serialized weekly on the popular webcomics portal StudyGroupComics.com, The Secret Voice v.2 #1 collects the rollicking first year of full color updates. Creator Zack Soto will be in attendance signing copies of the new publication and exhibiting original pages of comics art.

OR – The Hypo Signing

Noah Van Sciver signs at Floating World Comics on  Tuesday, November 6, 2012 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm.

RSVP on Facebook!

Press Release:

The Hypo: The Melancholic Young Lincoln, a documentation of Abraham Lincoln’s crushing cloud of depression by Noah Van Sciver! Reading Noah’s sensitive look at Lincoln’s irrepressible ambition despite his troubled times is even better than one of those sun lamps. The debut graphic novel from Noah Van Sciver follows the twentysomething Abraham Lincoln as he loses everything, long before becoming our most beloved president. Lincoln is a rising Whig in the state’s legislature as he arrives in Springfield, IL to practice law. With all of his possessions under his arms in two saddlebags, he is quickly given a place to stay by a womanizing young bachelor who becomes his friend and close confidant. Lincoln builds a life and begins friendships with the town’s top lawyers and politicians. He attends elegant dances and meets an independent-minded young woman from a high-society Kentucky family, and after a brisk courtship, becomes engaged. But, as time passes and uncertainty creeps in, young Lincoln is forced to battle a dark cloud of depression brought on by a chain of defeats and failures culminating into a nervous breakdown that threatens his life and sanity. This cloud of dark depression Lincoln calls “The Hypo.”

Dense crosshatching and an attention to detail help bring together this completely original telling of a man driven by an irrepressible desire to pull himself up by his bootstraps, overcome all obstacles, and become the person he strives to be. All the while unknowingly laying the foundation of character he would use as one of America’s greatest presidents.

Noah Van Sciver was born in 1984 and raised in a large Mormon family in New Jersey. He first came to comic readers’ attention with his comic book series Blammo, which earned him an Ignatz nomination in 2010. He currently lives in Denver, CO with his cat Getrude among stacks of books.

OR – The Understanding Monster Signing

Theo Ellsworth appears at Floating World Comics on Thursday, November 1, 2012 from 6:00 – 10:00 pm.

Press Release:

Theo Ellsworth’s previous book from Secret Acres, Capacity, had the honor and distinction of making our year end bestseller’s list for the past 3 years in a row. We are proud to invite our hometown hero back to Portland to celebrate the release of his latest full color graphic novel, THE UNDERSTANDING MONSTER.

In Theo Ellsworth’s celebrated debut, Capacity, the author embarked on a hand drawn quest to gain complete access to his own subconscious without going insane. With the reader as his witness, the author successfully smuggled an imaginary version of his own brain into his subconscious. Such quests, it turns out, are not to be taken lightly. Four years later, the author’s brain is nowhere to be found. Inside of a house full of mutating rooms and growing toys, a multi-dimensional robot, a Werewolf Exorcist, a ghost dragon, a fly, a green cloud, and a recently reanimated mummy are attempting to rescue a complicated being named Izadore. He faces psychological terror, mind-bending confusion, and physical danger as he undergoes a dream logic medical treatment that pulls him back through time and memory. The Understanding Monster – Book One is an exquisitely rendered exploration into the inner workings of an imaginary world.

The Understanding Monster – Book One published by Secret Acres, will be in stores in October, 2012. His comics are available at finer comic shops and online through the Secret Acres Emporium at www.secretacres.com.

Bio information:

Theo Ellsworth is a self-taught artist and storyteller who grew up in the mountains of Montana. He developed his art while wandering the United States in a motor powered vehicle. He is uncommonly fond of clouds, monsters, trees, and impossible objects. He is prone to fits of whimsy, and his mind is filled with preposterous notions, yet he still manages to come across as semi-normal. He now lives with a witch doctor and a slightly evil cat, and spends as much time as possible making comics, art zines, and imaginary phenomenon. He also co-founded the Pony Club gallery. He has replaced his motor powered vehicle with a two-wheeled, human-powered contraption.
