Emerald City Comicon Adds Michael Biehn as Their 3rd Celebrity for 2013

    Michael Biehn Aliens

    Press Release:

Aliens to invade Seattle! Come to Comicon if you want to live!

Star of Terminator, Tombstone and Aliens aims his sights on Seattle!

Seattle, WA – The versatile and recognizable Michael Biehn (“Kyle Reese” The Terminator 1 & T2: Judgment Day, ”Johnny Ringo” from Tombstone, ”Hicks” from Aliens) is the third celebrity guest announced for the upcoming 12th annual Emerald City Comicon taking place on March 28th – 30th, 2014 at the Washington State Convention Center. He will be appearing all three days!

Michael Biehn is one of those prolific actors and familiar faces that makes it impossible not to have enjoyed at least one of his films. He is arguably best known to mainstream audiences as bad guy “Johnny Ringo” in the cult western classic Tombstone which co-starred Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell. But fans of Sci-Fi fare will know him as both futuristic hero “Kyle Reese” in The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day as well as space marine “Cpl. Hicks” in Aliens, all three films by director James Cameron. Biehn’s partnership with Cameron would continue in the 1989 underwater adventure The Abyss.

Biehn has played a Navy Seal on the big screen on no less than three occasions: the aforementioned The Abyss, the 1990 film Navy Seals co-starring Charlie Sheen and the Michael Bay action romp The Rock starring Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage.

Getting his start on television shows such as James at 16, Logan’s Run and Family, Biehn ended up with a recurring role on the critically acclaimed cop drama Hill Street Blues as “Officer Randall Buttman”. He quickly found work on the big screen in the 1983 military piece The Lords of Discipline. He also has an uncredited role as the athlete “Mike” in the 1978 musical Grease starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

In recent years, Biehn has returned to television with appearances on Criminal Minds, Adventure Inc., The Magnificent Seven and Law and Order: Criminal Intent, while continuing to tackle roles on the big screen in films including K2, Quentin Tarrantino’s Planet Terror, and Megiddo: The Omega Code 2. He can next be seen in the upcoming cable series 24 Hour Rental, about a group of petty criminals that operate a shady video rental store.

Biehn was born in Anniston, Alabama. After moving Arizona as youth, he took part in the high school drama program at Lake Havasu City before eventually studying acting at the University of Arizona.

Also attending with Biehn will be his wife, actress Jennifer Blanc, best known for her work  as “Kendra Maibaum” on the cult television series by James Cameron Dark Angel starring Jessica Alba and as “Kate Bishop” on the FOX drama Party of Five. Other credits include Touched By Angel, Veronica Mars, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Both Biehn and Blanc appear together in the independent 2011 film The VIctim, which they also produced.

Biehn and Blanc join previously announced celebrity guests Nichelle Nichols (“Lt. Uhura” from Star Trek) and Richard Dean Anderson (star of MacGyver, Stargate SG-1). Roughly two dozen celebrity guests in all will be announced for this spectacular weekend, in addition to hundreds of popular comic guests, exhibitors and several exciting new offerings and surprises.

Coming off of a sold out 2013 show, tickets for Emerald City Comicon 2014 will be in high demand when they go on sale September 1st, 2014!

With a record turnout of 64,000 patrons in 2013, Emerald City Comicon consistently ranks as one of the Top 10 most attended conventions of its kind in North America as well as increasingly becoming the favorite show among many fans, comic guests, journalists and celebrities.

Established in 2003, Emerald City Comicon, while renowned worldwide for its growing popularity, continues to remain the Northwest’s premier comic book and pop culture convention founded in the belief that investing in local artists, companies and individuals is a lasting recipe for success and longevity.

Richard Dean Anderson 2nd Celebrity Guest Announced for Emerald City Comicon 2014

    Press Release:

Comicon gets itself into a a bit of a bind. Time to call MacGyver!

Pop culture icon Richard Dean Anderson comes to Seattle’s rescue!

Richard Dean AndersonSeattle, WA – Handsome and durable Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver, Stargate SG-1) is the second celebrity guest announced for the upcoming 12th annual Emerald City Comicon taking place on March 28th – 30th, 2014 at the Washington State Convention Center. He will be appearing all three days!

Richard Anderson is known worldwide as the title character in the hit 80s series MacGyver. Running for seven seasons on ABC, the action hero was notorious for getting himself out of tricky situations week after week purely by using his intellect and not firearms. The character, even though new episodes haven’t been produced in over two decades, continues to endure in pop culture, spawning not only the spoof film MacGruber, reprising “Angus MacGyver” in 2006 for a series of Mastercard commercials, but having become a verb in daily conversation.

Anderson would go on to achieve equal success as “Jack O’Neill” for eight seasons on Stargate SG-1, a television version of the cult theatrical film that starred Kurt Russell. Anderson also served as executive producer on the series. Leaving the show early to raise his daughter, he continued to appear as “O’Neill” in guest appearances on Stargate SG-1 as well as several of its various spin-offs.

Before becoming known as an action star, he played a doctor on the long-running soap General Hospital, starring as “Dr. Jeff Webber” from 1976 until 1981. Other television credits include the short-lived UPN series Legend, The Love Boat, The Facts of Life and most recently on the FOX comedy Raising Hope.

Born in Minnesota, Anderson originally had aspirations to become a professional hockey player until he broke both of his arms. Before making it as an actor, he worked as a whale handler in a marine mammal show, a musician in medieval dinner theater, and as a street mime and juggler. Anderson also seriously considered a career as a jazz musician.

Anderson is also an avid supporter and activist for various causes including Special Olympics, Waterkeeper Alliance and the Sclerosis Society. He is also on the Board of Trustees for Challengers Boys and Girls Club, as well as on the Board of Advisors of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

Anderson joins previously announced celebrity guest Nichelle Nichols (“Lt. Uhura” from Star Trek) as the first of roughly two dozen celebrity guests to be announced for this spectacular weekend, in addition to hundreds of popular comic guests, exhibitors and several exciting new offerings and surprises.

Emerald City Comicon Announces Nichelle Nichols as Their First Celebrity Guest for 2014

    Press Release:

Hailing frequencies are open in Seattle! Emerald City Comicon announces first celebrity guest of 2014!

Time to plan the “trek” to the largest comic book and pop culture convention in the Northwest!

UhuraSeattle, WA – Legendary actress Nichelle Nichols (“Lt. Uhura” from the classic Star Trek) is the first celebrity guest announced (as well as the fifth and final original cast member to attend over the last five years) for the upcoming 12th annual Emerald City Comicon taking place on March 28th – 30th, 2014 at the Washington State Convention Center. She will be appearing all three days!

Nichelle Nichols is truly one of the most trailblazing figures in television, with her regular role in Star Trek being one of only a small handful for black actresses that were featured prominently each week in people’s homes. So much so that civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. himself pleaded with her not to leave the sci-fi series because  she was serving as a crucial role model not only for women but for African-American’s everywhere.

Known quite literally around the galaxy, Nichols’ portrayal of “Lt. Uhura” on Star Trek spanned three seasons during the original series, a subsequent animated series and six feature films. Her professional career began with the 1959 film Porgy and Bess starring Sidney Poitier and Pearl Bailey, followed by appearances on the television series Tarzan and Gene Roddenberry’s The Lieutenant. Post-Star Trek work include roles in Snow Dogs, Are We There Yet? and episodes of Heroes and Futurama.

Nichols is also an accomplished singer, having released two albums of standards. She published her autobiography, ‘Beyond Uhura’, in 1994. Ever since the cancellation of Star Trek, she has been an advocate for NASA and began working directly with them to recruit both women and minorities into the space agency. Since the mid-80s, Nichols has also served on the Board of Governors of the National Space Society.

Nichols is the first of roughly two dozen celebrity guests to be announced for this spectacular weekend, in addition to hundreds of popular comic guests, exhibitors and several exciting new offerings and surprises.

    ECCC 2013 Con Report!

    Comments Off

On March 1-3, 2013, the Washington State Convention Center was home to the 10th annual Emerald City Comic Con! While I’ve attended the show 2 years prior, the show had undergone a massive change, particularly opening up a whole new hallway, adding to the depth of the show, as well as the serious amount of star power in their guests both in media as well as the comic world.

In terms of size alone, ECCC now seems to belong in the upper echelon of top comic conventions, trailing only SDCC, NYCC, and being on par with heavy hitter shows such as C2E2, and WonderCon. Jim Demonakos has put together a consistently solid show, and judging from the positive comments from the artists and writers that I spoke to at the show, ECCC will continue to be a great presence in the comic con circuit.

Heading into the show, I seriously underestimated the intense love of comics the fans up in the northwest have, experiencing long lines from show exclusives such as Sex # 1 and the Walking Dead Governor Special, to artist commission lines for Bruce Timm, Adi Granov, Skottie Young, Charlie Adlard, and Humberto Ramos. Going upstairs to the celebrity room, I was able to witness extremely long lines for stars such as Patrick Stewart, Christopher Lloyd, and Gillian Anderson. Overall, this show was the perfect mix of celebrities and comics one would expect from a comic convention. While SDCC is focused more on the entertainment side of it all, the love of comics was still heavily prevalent at this show, which made me happy to see so many fans line up to meet their favorite creators. I can’t wait to see this show continue to grow and foster the next generation of comic fans!

    And now, onto the pictures:
