Baltimore Comic-Con Welcomes Darryl “DMC” McDaniels

Press Release:

The Baltimore Comic-Con is thrilled to announce the addition of Darryl “DMC” McDaniels to our 2017 guest list. The 2017 Baltimore Comic-Con takes place on September 22nd, 23rd, and 24th at the Inner Harbor’s Baltimore Convention Center. You can purchase your tickets for the show now.

Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, a pioneer, icon, and founding member of the legendary rap group Run-DMC, brought his love for comics full circle with the creation of his very own independent publishing house called Darryl Makes Comics. Already a hero to his millions of fans around the world, DMC’s accomplishments read like a laundry list of musical and cultural accolades: Grammy-nominated musician, Emmy-winning life story, multi-platinum recording artist, 2009 Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and rap/rock pioneer who influenced music the first time he touched a mic. Before co-founding Run-DMC, DMC grew up reading comics and developed a passion for them. “When I started with Run-DMC, I was a nervous little nerdy kid,” says DMC. “I didn’t want to get up in front of a crowd and rhyme; but what gave me confidence, out there on stage was pretending that I was the Hulk on the microphone.”

In 2014 DMC’s childhood passion came to fruition when he, along with his Editor-in-Chief Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez and Senior Editor Riggs Morales, teamed up with some prominent fixtures in the comic book world to craft his first 48-page graphic novel, a 100% authentic, unapologetic, indie comic book under the Darryl Makes Comics imprint. The graphic novel, DMC #1, garnered critical praise and attention when it debuted in 2014 featuring some of the comic industry’s finest talent. The story was created by DMC and Damion Scott (Batman, Robin, Solo), with Ronald Wimberly (Vertigo/DC, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Prince of Cats) serving as creative consultant to develop the script. Each chapter is visualized by different teams of artists, including Chase Conley (Black Dynamite), Jeff Stokely (Six-Gun Gorilla, The Reason for Dragons), Felipe Smith (Peepo Choo, Ghost Rider), Mike & Mark Davis, the Mad Twiinz (Black Dynamite, The Boondocks), Shawn Crystal (Arkham Manor), and colorist Chris Sotomayor, not to mention cover art from industry legends Sal Buscema and Bob Wick, and graffiti pioneer MARE 139 (Style Wars).

Set in hip hop’s revolutionary era of the 1980s, the first comic featured DMC as a superhero fighting for justice in an alternate universe. Wild Style-inspired graffiti covers every surface of this world, as the true grit of pre-Giuliani New York is captured among the pages of this graphic novel. In his second graphic novel, released December 2, 2015, DMC returned and fulfilled his promise to expand the Darryl Makes Comics universe! In it, readers met more heroes like LAK6, Sifu Horus, and The Breaks! They are on the cusp of the b-boy hero movement but first they must take on the status quo that has been misleading New York City. Based on a story by Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Greg Pak (Marvel’s Totally Awesome Hulk, DC’s Batman/Superman), and Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, written by Amy Chu (DC’s Poison Ivy, Sensation Comics’ Wonder Woman) and illustrated by an incredible roster of talent featuring Juan Doe (Marvel’s Wolverines), Sung Goo Won (Cartoon Network’s Black Dynamite), award-winning artist Afu Chan (Society of Illustrators 2012), Marcus Williams (Action Lab’s Hero Cats) and Elliot Fernandez (DC’s Harley Quinn/Powergirl), DMC #2 features color art by Christopher Sotomayor and Eisner-winning colorist Gabriel Bautista. The covers are art directed by Edgardo Miranda- Rodriguez and illustrated by comic book industry giant Humberto Ramos (Marvel’s Spider-Man, X-Men) and graffiti king Bio of the Tats Cru, with color art by Edgardo Delgado (Marvel’s Spider-Man), DMC #2 also offers a variant cover by comic book industry legend Bill Sienkiewicz and graffiti curator and artist Alan Ket.

Darryl Makes Comics is dedicated to the idea that every walk of life has heroes and stories worth telling. “Hip hop was always based on creativity,” DMC says, “so what we’re trying to do with this comic book is not trying to create anything that’s new; we’re just going to show the world what’s already there… the beauty and the creativity of it.” DMC will be releasing his third issue in late 2017.

“Baltimore has a ton of Run-DMC fans,” said Marc Nathan, promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “Having DMC to our show to flex his comic book muscles is going to be amazing, and his music fans get to meet a whole new side of Darryl. We’re really excited about this, as we’re sure his fans, old and new, will be!”

The Baltimore Comic-Con returns to the Inner Harbor’s Baltimore Convention Center on September 22-24, 2017. In the coming weeks, look for more announcements from the Baltimore Comic-Con. Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of the legendary hip-hop group Run DMC appears at Clicks on Saturday August 22nd from 1:30 till 3:30 PM to sign his graphic novel and any items purchased from Clicks.

About the graphic novel DMC:
It’s 1985 in New York City. Wildstyle graffiti covers subway cars as B-boys break and spin in playgrounds and on street corners. Koch is mayor. Drugs and crime rule the streets. A terrifying plague is brewing in the shadows. And as the populace loses faith in the police, a man named Bernard Goetz is being hailed as a hero for shooting four teenagers in a subway car. In this 1985, however, the city’s brand new guardian angels wear spandex and capes, wielding their gadgets and their superpowers to clean up the City – even if their methods hurt more people than they help. There’s the deluded ‘graffiti king’ Mr. Marx patrolling the tunnels; the dark moral crusader The Puritan who stalks the shadows of the Lower East Side; and above it all, the godlike Helios, darling of the Upper East Side and the NYPD. It seems like only some of New York’s residents are benefitting from these vigilantes’ protection. The rest whisper the name of another hero: DMC.

You see, in this 1985, Darryl McDaniels (Run DMC) never rocks the mic to become one of hip-hop’s most enduring icons. Instead, he dons his tracksuit and Adidas sneakers to defend the city’s marginalized citizens against super villain and hero alike, leaving no traces besides the imprint of his knuckle rings on his opponents’ faces. (By day, though, he teaches junior high school English.) With the help of reporter Charlie Cooper and a band of graffiti artists led by the spunky Lak6, DMC must confront the new ‘heroes,’ and investigate whether there’s anything behind their sudden appearance.

DMC, the inaugural title from Darryl Makes Comics, imagines an alternate history that blends traditional comic book storytelling with the pressures and anxieties of 1980’s NYC, and explores how we got to where we are now. DMC is a superhero for those who need one most.
