C2E2 Welcomes New Comics Publishers to 2013 Convention

Protectors

Press Release:

C2E2 WELCOMES NEW COMICS PUBLISHERS TO ANNUAL POP CULTURE EVENT

First Time Exhibitors to Bring Brand-New Artists, Writers and Stories to Show!

Norwalk, CT, March 26, 2013: Officials at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) have announced that there will be many new and fresh faces at the annual pop culture extravaganza this year. Several notable comics publishers will be exhibiting at the show for the first time. They will be joining other leading publishers, such as Marvel and DC Entertainment, who have helped to make C2E2 the preeminent pop culture event in the Midwest since its debut in 2010. Officials are projecting that exhibitor space at C2E2 will be approximately 25 percent larger than last year! A few of the creative and innovative new companies on hand this year will be Action Lab Entertainment, Athleta Comics and Lion Forge Comics. In addition, Reload Comics and 2000 AD/Rebellion will be at C2E2 for the first time promoting their widely popular properties and titles.

In addition to Marvel and DC, some other returning publishers include Anomaly Productions, Archaia, Avatar Press, Big Dog Ink, Boom! Studios, Dark Horse, Medallion Press, Quirk Books, Valiant Entertainment, Xigency Studios and Zenescope Entertainment. All these publishers will have new comic books and stories to reveal at C2E2 and they will have fresh, original artwork to display in their booths. DC Entertainment has provided the original poster art for this year’s show which features Superman in an iconic Chicago setting. The Marvel booth will be centrally located on the show floor where fans will have the opportunity to mix and mingle with creators and staff. Many of the publishers will also be participating in panels, providing show exclusives, and will be bringing their top talent to meet the thousands of fans on hand at C2E2.

As noted, C2E2 has quickly become the largest and most influential pop culture event in the Midwest. It attracted just over 27,000 fans when it was launched in 2010 and grew to over 41,000 fans last year. While it is impossible to project attendance for 2013, convention officials note that ticket sales are running between 85% – 95% ahead of the same time last year, virtually guaranteeing that this will be the most widely attended C2E2 to date. This year’s C2E2 will take place April 26 – 28 in the West Building at McCormick Place Convention Center.

“The fact that we have so many really cool first time publishers signing up for our show is the best news I could possibly be sharing,” notes Lance Fensterman, Global Vice President for ReedPOP and Show Manager for C2E2. “Presenting new original content and being able to provide fans an opportunity to meet artists and creators who they have never met before is the lifeblood of what we do! We want to provide a home where our new customers feel instantly happy and productive and where our fans come away feeling like they have ‘discovered’ something. I am hugely grateful to all the publishers who have decided to join us for the first time this year and I know our fans will do everything they can to make C2E2 a great experience for them.”

Examples of the various projects that some of these publishers will be promoting at C2E2 include:

  • Action Lab Entertainment, publisher of the 2012 two-time Eisner nominated Princeless, will be at C2E2 to introduce their lineup of creator-owned comics. They will be presenting at the Diamond Retailer Summit and will talk about Jamal Igle’s Molly DangerNFL Rush Zone, Jeremy Dale’s SkywardPrinceless, Vamplets: Nightmare Nursery, Pirate Eye and their new Mature Readers line called Action Lab: Danger Zone.
  • Athleta Comics is owned by Israel Idonije, the longtime defensive player for the Chicago Bears. Mr. Idonije will be coming to C2E2 to promote his first comic project The Protectors. Idonije was inspired to create The Protectors when he had an idea for a superhero who would appeal to both comic book enthusiasts and die-hard sports fans.  He has teamed up with the creative team of writer Ron Marz and artist Bart Sears and Idonije, Marz and Sears will be at the Athleta booth throughout the show and will participate in a panel!
  • Lion Forge Comics will unveil its two latest publications on Saturday, April 27 at C2E2.  Former Playboy 2011 Playmate of the Year has partnered with Lion Forge on the use of her image and story line for Wonderous: The Aventures of Claire Sinclair. Actor Flex Alexander has collaborated with Lion Forge on a cyber-thriller comic called The Joshua Run.  Alexander notes: “I am very excited to be a part of C2E2 this year. This is big for me because I grew up a comic book fan and collector. I can’t wait for everyone to get into the world of The Joshua Run. It is going to be an amazing ride!”
  • United Kingdom publisher Reload will be making their first U.S. convention appearance at C2E2. They will promote their flagship title, Jericho, which was created by Fwah Storm, self-described as a “musician, magician, poet, illustrator, a proud member of Reload Comics and so much more!” Storm notes that Reload will be bringing their books, merchandise and promotional material (along with some other goodies!) to C2E2.
  • The staff at 2000 AD/Rebellion note: “After hearing such good things about C2E2, we knew exactly where we’d be spreading the 2000 AD Thrill-power! We’ll be promoting our North American line of collections – from classics such as Judge Dredd and Sláine the Barbarian, to more modern titles like Leviathan and Zombo – as well as bringing a few little British treats across for fans new and old! We’ll also have a great panel on the Friday evening at 7:45pm with several top names that will be very familiar to US audiences! We can’t wait to get to Chicago and introduce new readers to the amazing galaxy of characters from 2000 AD!”

Tickets for C2E2 are currently on sale at www.C2E2.com. Anyone interested in exhibiting at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo should contact Larry Settembrini, Larry@ReedPOP.com.  As noted, more guests and activities will be announced in the month ahead and fans should keep their eyes on C2E2’s website for additional comics and entertainment announcements.

Dark Horse Celebrates 25 Years of Manga

Dark Horse 25 Years of Manga

Press Release:

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF MANGA!
by Carl Horn

March 2013 is Manga Month here at Dark Horse Comics. We’re celebrating 25 years of publishing some of the best and most exciting Manga in the industry. We’re proud to partner with Manga greats like Amano, CLAMP, Hiroya Oku, Yasuhiro Nightow, Kohta Hirano and so many more! We’ve also been publishing english editions of the longest running Manga in publishing, Oh My Goddess. We hope you join us during this month to share your favorites and thoughts on MANGA. Our Manga expert extraordinaire and editor, Carl Horn, details our history and what we’re celebrating.

It began as it usually does—with Godzilla rising from the sea. Dark Horse’s first manga, published twenty-five years ago this May, was Kazuhisa Iwata’s adaptation of the 1984 Godzilla movie. It was edited and adapted into English by the founder and president of the company, Mike Richardson, and its vice president of publishing, Randy Stradley. Looking back, the choice seems to pay tribute to the original generation of Japanese pop culture fans in North America, whom they represent. After all, anime’s been on TV here since 1963, but as far back as the 1950s young Americans were thrilling to Japanese kaiju (giant monster) films that were dubbed in English for US theaters, such as Godzilla and Rodan. The tremendous success of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise (from which Dark Horse’s latest release, Evangelion: Comic Tribute, is out in March) has encouraged some of today’s fans to rediscover the kaiju tradition, which remains an important influence on the work of Evangelion director Hideaki Anno.

That brings us right around to anime, which issue #1 of Godzilla already had a nod to. I noticed the ad on the last page that promoted a Dark Horse comic book series that had begun just the year before entitled Mecha, promising a story “in the tradition of Mobile Suit Gundam.” What struck me is that Dark Horse was saying this in 1988—ten years before Gundam had its first US home video release, and twelve years before anyGundam would be broadcast on TV here. But Mecha’s writer (Randy Stradley once more, with pencils and mecha designs by Harrison Fong) was already building Gundam models back then, and he was confident the kind of fans who read Dark Horse would know what he meant; Randy’s editorial on the inside front cover of Mecha #1 felt free to mention not only Gundam, but MacrossDunbine, and Orguss as influences. Mecha, in fact, was Dark Horse’s very first comic book to be published in color.

Dark Horse is unusual among North American manga companies for its strong tradition of comic book publishing. But that’s the very tradition that launched manga here—all through the 1980s and ’90s, the standard industry format for manga publishing in English involved putting one or two new chapters out each month as a comic book, and we still publish series such as Oh My Goddess! and Blade of the Immortal that began that way. It may seem a strange way to publish manga now, and yet, it had a certain authenticity to the way manga are published in Japan, where they aren’t released straight to tankobon (graphic novel) format, but are instead serialized chapter by chapter in magazines that have page sizes more similar to American comics than tankobon. When I look back over the space of a quarter century to that first issue of Godzilla, the fact that our first manga looked like our first comic books takes on a special meaning—it symbolizes how they were right alongside each other in our founding years, and how they both remain at the core of our identity as a publisher. You’ll be hearing a lot more about it in this, Dark Horse’s twenty-fifth manga anniversary year.

Press Release:

COREY TAYLOR TO PEN HOUSE OF GOLD & BONES COMIC!

A multimedia presence includes two upcoming Stone Sour albums and more!

October 10, NEW YORK, NY—Grammy-nominated musician and best-selling author Corey Taylor, the lyricist and lead singer of Slipknot and Stone Sour, is setting down the microphone and putting ink and images to paper in his new project with Dark Horse Comics—House of Gold & Bones!

With stunning covers from Jason Shawn Alexander (Empty Zone, Abe Sapien), this limited four-issue series marks Corey Taylor’s debut in the comics genre. “I’ve been a die-hard fan of comics, on every level, my entire life,” says Taylor. “This has been a dream of mine for years now, and this project was tailor made for a comic, no pun intended. I couldn’t have picked a better company than Dark Horse to make this a reality. I have loved several of their titles for many years, going back to ’92. If we can get this crazy world out of my head and onto the canvas, it’ll be the best thing I’ve ever attempted. And with Dark Horse, I have every confidence that’s exactly what we’ll do.”

House of Gold & Bones is a unique multimedia experience which includes two Stone Sour albums via Roadrunner Records (release date for Part 1 is October 22, with Part 2 following in 2013), videos, online presence, creative album packaging, live shows, and now the Dark Horse Comics series. Each element will follow and expand on the story. Taylor, already an internationally best-selling author, courtesy of last year’s Seven Deadly Sins, wrote the story—as well as the lyrics for the twenty-three tracks that make up the two albums—as a linear story line. The Stone Sour songs set the tone and follow the action, with Taylor’s House of Gold & Bones comic expanding on the story.

Corey Taylor will be signing in the Dark Horse Booth at New York Comic Con Saturday, October 12 at 3 p.m.

Stone Sour’s House of Gold & Bones Part 1 album is on sale October 22, 2012!

House of Gold & Bones issue #1 is on sale April 17, 2013!

Final Fantasy Artist Yoshitaka Amano to be a Spotlight Guest at NYCC 2012

Amano NYCC

Press Release:

VISIONARY ILLUSTRATOR YOSHITAKA AMANO TO BE  SPOTLIGHT GUEST AT NEW YORK COMIC CON

Amano To Attend In Cooperation With Dark Horse Comics

Norwalk, CT, September 7, 2012: New York Comic Con (NYCC) is today proud to announce Yoshitaka Amano, the illustrator most known for sculpting the worlds of Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D, will travel from Tokyo to attend this year’s NYCC as a Spotlight Guest. New York Comic Con, which will take place October 11 – 14, 2012 at NYC’s Javits Center, is one of New York’s largest annual events, last year attracting over 100,000 attendees. Amano joins a broad spectrum of already-announced guests including Brian K. Vaughan, Mike Mignola, Christopher Lloyd, Joshua Gates and Anne Rice. Amano’s appearance at New York Comic Con is in partnership with Dark Horse Comics, who will release The Sky: The Art of Final Fantasy, a giant-sized collection of Amano’s art, on October 17.

Yoshitaka Amano, born in 1952 in Shizuoka, Japan, got his start as an illustrator working as a character designer at Tatsunoko Productions in the 1960s. At Tatsunoko, he lent his pen and spirit to create the looks of such iconic anime series as Gatchaman and Time Bokan. In the 1980s, Amano began his work on Final Fantasy, creating the visuals of the ever-evolving series’s characters and worlds, and Vampire Hunter D, defining the appearance of the world-famous vampire slayer. Amano’s work began to attract serious international acclaim in the next decade, and the 1990s saw the start of global exhibitions of Amano’s creations in cities including New York, Los Angeles, France, Germany and Hong Kong. The year 2000 saw Amano — now known the world over — partnering with Neil Gaiman for the Eisner-Award Winning Sandman: The Dream Hunters. At present, Amano is at work on a computer-generated film, Deva Zan.

Amano will participate at New York Comic Con speaking about his career — specifically his groundbreaking work on Final Fantasy – and signing autographs for attendees. Full details about his panel and signings will be made available in the near future.

“I am very honored to welcome Yoshitaka Amano to New York Comic Con,” notes Lance Fensterman, Group Vice President for ReedPOP and Show Manager for NYCC. “Amano is a legend and inspiration for fans and professionals on both sides of the Pacific; his illustrations have shaped careers and sculpted dreams. We’re uniquely excited, as well, as while Amano was born and lives in Japan, he set up a studio in SoHo in 1996, so NYCC is a little bit of a homecoming. We look forward tremendously to his return to New York City!”
