Legend of Korra Artist Appears at Queer Comics Expo 2017

Press Release:

The Cartoon Art Museum is proud to announce Irene Koh as the 2017 Queer Comics Expo Special Guest. Irene Koh is an illustrator, wanderer, and self-described red meat enthusiast. Born in Seoul, she has lived in Tokyo, New England, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Koh received her BFA in illustration from RISD in 2012. Most recently, she is a professional comics artist (Secret Origins: Batgirl, Afrina and the Glass Coffin) and karaoke superstar. Currently, she is drawing The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars graphic novels for Dark Horse Comics.

The Legend of Korra is an Emmy award-winning animated series that is the sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, starring female protagonist Korra, the Avatar at the center of everything. Dark Horse’s The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars graphic novel series features Korra’s relationship with Asami and is the official continuation of Nickelodeon’s fan-favorite series, The Legend of Korra.

The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars Part One begins with Korra and Asami leaving the spirit world and returning to Republic City only to find political hijinks and human vs. spirit conflict. A pompous developer plans to turn the new spirit portal into an amusement park, potentially severing an already tumultuous connection with the spirits. What’s more, the triads have realigned and are in a brutal all-out brawl at the city’s borders, where hundreds of evacuees have relocated! In order to get through it all, Korra and Asami vow to look out for each other—but first, they’ve got to get better at being a team.

This three-part graphic novel series is written by Nickelodeon TV series co-creator and executive producer Michael Dante DiMartino, drawn by Irene Koh (Batgirl1602TMNT), with covers by Heather Campbell (Free Comic Book Day 2016: The Legend of Korra), colors by Vivian Ng, and consultation by TV series co-creator and executive producer Bryan Konietzko.

The fourth annual Queer Comics Expo (QCE) will with Special Guest Irene Koh will take place on Saturday, July 8 and Sunday, July 9, 2017 from 11am to 5pm at the SOMArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan Street in San Francisco. The two-day event will present over 50 creators and 20 programming sessions and attract around 500 attendees.

SATURDAY, APRIL 22
3:00–4:00 p.m. Panel Room S403 The Millennial’s Guide to Keeping Comics Alive

The integration of social media into society has completely changed how people communicate with each other, and the comics industry is not invulnerable to this change. Join Dark Horse creators Kristen Gudsnuk (Henchgirl) and Kel McDonald (Buffy: The High School Years, Misfits of Avalon) to discuss the implications of social media on the industry and how creators use social media to engage with fans.

SUNDAY, APRIL 23
1:15–2:15 p.m. Panel Room S403 The Un-CONventional Superheroes

For decades, popular culture has been dominated by stories from superhero comic books. Most people can’t think of either superheroes or comics without thinking of the other. In recent years, Dark Horse creators have sought to pay homage to superheroes while also putting a modern spin on the idea of heroics. Join Jim Calafiore (Leaving Megalopolis), Kristen Gudsnuk (Henchgirl), and Jeff Lemire (Black Hammer) for a lively conversation about superheroes and antiheroes in the modern era and how their characters seek to challenge society’s perceptions of the superhero.
