2017 Ringo Awards Final Ballot Announced

Press Release:

The 2017 Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards are to be presented on the evening of Saturday, September 23, 2017 as part of the fan- and pro-favorite convention, the Baltimore Comic-Con. The Ringo Awards has completed the 2017 nomination process, which was inclusive of fans and comic book professionals alike, and both communities showed strong support, both in talking about us on their websites, blogs, and social media feeds, and by submitting their nominations.

With the nomination deadline looming, we continued to see significant volume each day, and determined we needed to extend our original voting deadline to accommodate as many interested participants as we reasonably could without adversely impacting our ability to release and provide sufficient voting time for the final ballot. The augmentation in participation during the nomination extension ended up being significant.

Voting on the 2017 Final Ballot is restricted to comic book industry creative community — anyone involved in and credited with creating comics professionally. We now present the inaugural Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards Final Ballot.

Frank Miller to Sign “Xerxes” Lithograph in Dark Horse Booth at San Diego Comic-Con

Press Release:

To celebrate the triumphant return of Frank Miller’s seminal work, Dark Horse is excited to reveal gorgeous art from his upcoming comics series Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander. Additionally, as a special “thank you” to fans, Dark Horse is offering attendees the opportunity to meet comics legend Frank Miller at San Diego Comic-Con! On Friday, July 21st from 12:00 to 1:30 PM, Dark Horse will welcome Miller for a special signing at booth #2615 at the San Diego Convention Center.

Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander is Frank Miller’s comics prequel to his epic 300, the inspiration for the motion picture directed by Zack Snyder. Alex Sinclair (Dark Knight III: The Master Race) joins Frank as colorist on the highly anticipated series. Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander will launch in 2018. Xerxes rose to power in fifth-century-B.C. Persia and became known as “The King of Kings,” eventually raising and leading a massive army intent on ruthlessly destroying the hated Greeks who killed his father. Xerxes seeks nothing less than to become a god himself—and achieves his wish!

The Frank Miller signing is an exclusive wristband-only event. Wristbands will be distributed by a random drawing in the Dark Horse Comics booth on both Thursday and Friday mornings during the first hour of the show. Dark Horse will provide a complimentary Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander lithograph to all fans that receive a wristband.

Legend of Korra Artist Appears at Queer Comics Expo 2017

Press Release:

The Cartoon Art Museum is proud to announce Irene Koh as the 2017 Queer Comics Expo Special Guest. Irene Koh is an illustrator, wanderer, and self-described red meat enthusiast. Born in Seoul, she has lived in Tokyo, New England, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Koh received her BFA in illustration from RISD in 2012. Most recently, she is a professional comics artist (Secret Origins: Batgirl, Afrina and the Glass Coffin) and karaoke superstar. Currently, she is drawing The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars graphic novels for Dark Horse Comics.

The Legend of Korra is an Emmy award-winning animated series that is the sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, starring female protagonist Korra, the Avatar at the center of everything. Dark Horse’s The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars graphic novel series features Korra’s relationship with Asami and is the official continuation of Nickelodeon’s fan-favorite series, The Legend of Korra.

The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars Part One begins with Korra and Asami leaving the spirit world and returning to Republic City only to find political hijinks and human vs. spirit conflict. A pompous developer plans to turn the new spirit portal into an amusement park, potentially severing an already tumultuous connection with the spirits. What’s more, the triads have realigned and are in a brutal all-out brawl at the city’s borders, where hundreds of evacuees have relocated! In order to get through it all, Korra and Asami vow to look out for each other—but first, they’ve got to get better at being a team.

This three-part graphic novel series is written by Nickelodeon TV series co-creator and executive producer Michael Dante DiMartino, drawn by Irene Koh (Batgirl1602TMNT), with covers by Heather Campbell (Free Comic Book Day 2016: The Legend of Korra), colors by Vivian Ng, and consultation by TV series co-creator and executive producer Bryan Konietzko.

The fourth annual Queer Comics Expo (QCE) will with Special Guest Irene Koh will take place on Saturday, July 8 and Sunday, July 9, 2017 from 11am to 5pm at the SOMArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan Street in San Francisco.
