SF – An Evening with Ted Naifeh

Cartoonist Ted Naifeh (Courtney Crumrin, Heroines) appears on Friday July 14th at 6:00 PM at the Timken Hall.

Press Release:

In celebration of the CCA MFA in Comics graduate students making their return to San Francisco, California College of the Arts will host its fifth annual summer guest speaker series featuring three of comics’ most celebrated creators and a special reading by our graduating students. Each Friday during the month of July, the Comics in the City speaker series will highlight various aspects of the comics medium from independent publishing to the craft of writing and the future of digital comics. Featuring best-selling graphic novelist Raina Telgemeier (Ghosts, Smile), dynamic cartoonist Ted Naifeh (Courtney Crumrin, Heroines), critically-acclaimed memoirist Nicole J. Georges (Fetch), and our very own graduate cartoonists, this public lecture series will take place on CCA’s San Francisco campus.

Bursting onto the scene as co-creator/illustrator of goth romance comic Gloomcookie, Ted Naifeh is best known for Courtney Crumrin, the multi-volume horror-fantasy adventures of a tween curmudgeon witch and her warlock uncle. Ted also wrote and illustrated Polly and the Pirates, an all-ages adventure of a quiet, shy girl kidnapped into the role of Pirate Queen. Among Ted’s other credits are How Loathsome, a decidedly adult story of life in the SF cultural underground, art for DC’s Ame-Comi story of Duela Dent, Heroines, and contributions to other books ranging from Mouseguard to Batman ‘66 to Dark Horse’s Creepy. Ted lives in San Francisco with a pet fog named Karl.

This talk is followed by the Emanata Grad Comics Opening Reception.
