Press Release:

Comic Illustrator to Defy Death at Coast City Comicon Nerd Rave

Comedy, music and death-defying escapes await those who attend the annual Coast City Comicon Nerd Rave at Empire.

Von GormanPORTLAND, ME – 10/18/2013 – Coast City Comicon is proud to announce this year’s all-star lineup for the annual Nerd Rave concert to be held on November 8 at the newly renovated Empire Dine and Dance. The evening’s entertainment will start off light with the comedy stylings of “Mystery Science Theater 3000″ alum Mary Jo Pehl. Local bands Free Steak Dinner, 4 Player Co-op, and Covered in Bees will provide musical entertainment throughout the night as nerds from near and far dance the night away. The true thrill of the evening lies with Sean Von Gorman, a New York-based comic illustrator and death-defying escape artist. Due to the nature of the show, the Nerd Rave is only open to those 18 and older.

Von Gorman has been making a name for himself in the comics industry by taking matters of marketing and publicity into his own hands. In February 2012, Von Gorman chained himself up outside of Forbidden Planet, a comic shop in New York City, until they sold out of his comic “The Secret Adventures of Houdini.” The escape artist has also been known to pull similar publicity stunts at comic conventions all around the country. For the Nerd Rave, Von Gorman has prepared a special stunt that he calls “Breathless.”

“This is the first time I’ve ever done this stunt for an audience, so quit your job, and sell your kids. You’re not going to want to miss this,” says Von Gorman. “If you miss out on this show, you’ll be the outcast of your community.”

“We’re really excited about the entire lineup. Free Steak Dinner, 4 Player Co-op and Covered in Bees are all Portland mainstays and favorites, but their music speaks to the nature of the event, too,” explains Jarrett Melendez, the Coast City Comicon organizer and promoter. “Mary Jo Pehl and Sean Von Gorman are contributing something really special to the event. We’re going to give our attendees a performance unlike anything they’ve ever seen at a comic convention.”

About Coast City Comicon

Tickets for Coast City Comicon start at $25 — Kids under 12 get in free on Sunday, November 10. The cover for the Nerd Rave is $6.

Gunnar Hansen Hosting Chili Cook-Off at Coast City Comicon 2013

Press Release:

‘Leatherface’ to Serve Chili at Coast City Comicon

GunnarPORTLAND, MAINE – 9/11/13 – Coast City Comics is proud to announce that actor Gunnar Hansen will be appearing at this year’s Coast City Comicon on November 8-10 at the DoubleTree by Hilton. Fans of the horror genre know Hansen’s alter ego, the intimidating Leatherface from the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” franchise. Hansen also appeared in the film “Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers” with fellow Coast City Comicon guest Linnea Quigley.

As part of Hansen’s appearance — he’ll be signing autographs and posing for photos with fans all weekend — he has generously agreed to host a chili cook-off during the convention. Fans will not only be able to have their chili judged by Hansen, who happens to be an aficionado of the dish, but they will be able to taste chili prepared by the man behind the mask.

Following a screening of “Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers,” fans can participate in a Q&A session with Gunnar Hansen and co-star Linnea Quigley. Hansen will also be selling copies of his latest book, “Chain Saw Confidential.”

“We’re tired of the conventions that just plop movie stars behind a table and just have them sign stuff,” explains Jarrett Melendez, organizer of Coast City Comicon. “We like being able to provide a more intimate experience for fans. They won’t just get herded through a line and shoved away before they can manage a quick ‘Hello’; they can actually take a minute and talk with idols like Gunnar. Heck, they can even taste food that he made! You don’t get that at national shows like New York Comic Con or San Diego Comic Con.”

Coast City Comicon 2013 will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton hotel across from the Maine Mall this November 9 and 10. Attendees can pre-register for tickets online at coastcitycomicon.com. Adult passes start at $25. Passes for children and students will be available at the door with prices starting at $10. For more information, visit coasticitycomicon.com or call 207-899-1505.
