NC – Funky Winkerbean Signing

Tom Batiuk signs at Chapel Hill Comics on Saturday, June 8, 2013 from 2:00 until 4:00 pm!

RSVP on Facebook!

Press Release:

Chapel Hill Comics is proud to announce that as part of our 10th/35th Anniversary Festivities, we will host Tom Batiuk on Saturday, June 8, from 2pm until 4pm, when he will sign The Complete Funky Winkerbean books one and two!

From Comic Book Resources:

For more than four decades, Tom Batiuk’s “Funky Winkerbean” has been a fixture in the comics page of newspapers nationwide. Initially set in high school centered around a group of students and a handful of teachers and employees — including the secretary who actually ran the school and Harry L. Dinkle, the self-proclaimed “world’s greatest band director.” In 1992, Batiuk relaunched the strip, jumping forward in time, something he did again in 2007.

During this time Batiuk has received both praise and criticism for combining dramatic and comedic elements and tackling issues ranging from bullying to teen pregnancy to cancer and death. In 2007, Batiuk was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for “Lisa’s Story,” a story arc in which the character succumbed to cancer. In addition to his work on “Funky,” from 1979-1990 Batiuk wrote the strip “John Darling” and since 1987 has been writing “Crankshaft” for his former classmate Chuck Ayers to draw.

Come meet the creator of one of the nation’s most recognizable comic strips!

RSVP on Facebook!

Press Release:

Chapel Hill Comics is proud to announce that as part of our 10th/35th Anniversary Festivities, we will host a release party for Mur Lafferty’s new book, The Shambling Guide to New York City! The event will be from 7pm until 9pm on Saturday, June 1. What’s the book about? Here you go:

A travel writer takes a job with a shady publishing company in New York, only to find that she must write a guide to the city – for the undead!

Because of the disaster that was her last job, Zoe is searching for a fresh start as a travel book editor in the tourist-centric New York City. After stumbling across a seemingly perfect position though, Zoe is blocked at every turn because of the one thing she can’t take off her resume — human.

Not to be put off by anything — especially not her blood drinking boss or death goddess coworker — Zoe delves deep into the monster world. But her job turns deadly when the careful balance between human and monsters starts to crumble — with Zoe right in the middle.

We’ll have copies of the book on hand, and we’d love you to come down and meet the author! This is a prose novel, not a comic, though it does sport a fantastic cover by noted comic artist Jamie McKelvie!

Plus, check it out: the book is already getting good reviews! Publisher’s Weekly listed The Shambling Guide as one of the best summer books of 2013!

Mur Lafferty is an author and podcaster based in Durham, NC. She is the host of the I Should Be Writing podcast and a two time John W. Campbell Award nominee.

NC – Relish Signing

lucy_knisley_cover

Cartoonist Lucy Knisley signs at Chapel Hill Comics on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 1:00 until 3:00 pm!

Press Release:

Chapel Hill Comics is proud to announce that as part of our 10th/35th Anniversary Festivities, we will host Lucy Knisley on Saturday, May 18, from 1pm until 3pm, when she will sign her new memoir, Relish!

We’ll have copies of Relish, as well as her previous memoir, French Milk, and copies of the Adventure Time comics for which she has provided stories! Here is our Facebook page for the event if you want to RSVP or invite your friends!

Lucy Knisley loves food. The daughter of a chef and a gourmet, this talented young cartoonist comes by her obsession honestly. In her forthright, thoughtful, and funny memoir, Lucy traces key episodes in her life thus far, framed by what she was eating at the time and lessons learned about food, cooking, and life.

Each chapter is bookended with an illustrated recipe-many of them treasured family dishes, and a few of them Lucy’s original inventions. In this book, you’ll learn how to cook everything from chai to chicken. A welcome read for anyone who ever felt more passion for a sandwich than is strictly speaking proper, Relish is a graphic novel for our time: it invites the reader to celebrate food as a connection to our bodies and a connection to the earth, rather than an enemy, a compulsion, or a consumer product.

NC – Battle of Blood & Ink Signing

ja020213Jared Axelrod signs at Chapel Hill Comics on Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 5:00 till 7:00 pm!

RSVP on Facebook!

Press Release:

Chapel Hill Comics is proud to announce our next event: We are hosting Jared Axelrod, author of the Tor graphic novel The Battle of Blood & Ink: A Fable of the Flying City!

Jared Axelrod is an author, an illustrator, a graphic designer, a sculptor, a costume designer, a podcaster and quite a few other things that he’s lost track of but will no doubt remember when the situation calls for it.

He is a founding member of the daily flash-fiction website “365 Tomorrows,” and the writer and producer of the science-fiction podcasts, “The Voice Of Free Planet X,” “Fables of the Flying City” and  “Aliens You Will Meet.”

“The Battle of Blood & Ink” is his first graphic novel.

Please come out this Saturday to meet Jared and talk to him about his graphic novel!

Here’s what the graphic novel is all about:

If you’re visiting the flying city of Amperstam without the latest printing of The Lurker’s Guide, you might as well be lost. This one-sheet is written, edited, and printed by Ashe, a girl raised on the streets of the flying city, and is dedicated to revealing its hidden treasures and deepest secrets-including many that the overcontrolling government doesn’t want anyone to know. The stakes are raised when Ashe accidentally uncovers the horror of exactly how Amperstam travels among the skies and garners the attention of those who would rather that secret be kept in the hands of the city’s powerful leaders.

Soon Ashe is on the run from thugs and assassins, faced with the choice of imperiling her life just to keep publishing, or giving in to the suggestion of a rich patron that she trade in her voice and identity for a quiet, comfortable life. It’s a war of confusion for Ashe, but one thing is very clear: just because you live in a flying city, you can’t always keep your head in the clouds.

NC – A Wrinkle in Time Signing

Hope Larson signs at Chapel Hill Comics on Sunday October 7, 2012 from 2:00 – 7:00 pm.

RSVP on Facebook!

Press Release:

Chapel Hill Comics is proud to announce our next big signing event: On Sunday, October 7, from 2pm until 4pm, cartoonist Hope Larson will sign her new graphic novel adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time!

The world already knows Meg and Charles Wallace Murry, Calvin O’Keefe, and the three Mrs-Who, Whatsit, and Which-the memorable and wonderful characters who fight off a dark force and save our universe in the Newbery award-winning classic A Wrinkle in Time. But in 50 years of publication, the book has never been illustrated. Now, Hope Larson takes the classic story to a new level with her vividly imagined interpretations of tessering and favorite characters like the Happy Medium and Aunt Beast. Perfect for old fans and winning over new ones, this graphic novel adaptation is a must-read.

Hope Larson is the author of four graphic novels, including Mercury and Chiggers. Her short comics have been featured on the Op-Ed page of the New York Times and in several anthologies, notably the Flight series and Image Comics’ Tori Amos-inspired Comic Book Tattoo.

Hope has been nominated for cartooning awards in the US, Canada and Europe, and is the recipient of a 2006 Ignatz Award and a 2007 Eisner Award. She holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Come meet Hope and pick up a copy of the graphic novel! It should be a blast!

Note: This signing takes place during Chapel Hill’s annual downtown festival, Festifall. There will be a lot going on, and it’ll be tons of fun, but you should plan your visit to the store accordingly!
