Long Beach Comic Expo 2018 has announced their programming schedule for next weekend’s convention on February 17-18th! Acclaimed writer Don McGregor, whose groundbreaking work on Black Panther including titles such as JUNGLE ACTION lead to him be one of the inspirations for the current hit Marvel movie. A look at the “sword and sandal” genre of stories (once called “peplums”) that was a huge part of popular culture in the 1950s and ’60s – inspired by Ancient Greek and Roman mythologies – and has been reinvigorated in the modern day by the addition of sorcery and other-worldly settings. Fanbase Press Editorials Manager Michele Brittany is joined by creators and experts to discuss the history of the genre and explore its legacy in stories that entertain comic book readers today.

AZ – The Flash Co-Writers Signing

Writers Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn appear at Fantastic Worlds Comics on Saturday, December 16, 2017 from noon till 5:00 PM for a signing. All back issues and graphic novels written by either author will be 20% off during the signing!

Mark Waid has written for every major comic publisher, including DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Archie, Dark Horse, Image and Top Cow. He is best known for his long run as writer on the monthly adventures of The Flash and for his work with artist Alex Ross on the best-selling Kingdom Come. His credits also include JLA, 52, The Brave and the Bold, and Legion of Super-Heroes for DC Comics as well as Black Widow, Daredevil, X-Men, and Fantastic Four for Marvel Comics. He is currently writing for Captain America, The Avengers, and Champions.

Brian Augustyn has spent 33 years in the business. At DC Comics he was an editor of Flash, Justice League, and Wonder Woman. Some of Brian’s notable works include Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (which has been made into an animated film to be released this winter), Batman: Master of the Future, Crimson, and Out There. Brian currently hosts a weekly podcast, Sort of a Big Show.

As co-writers, Brian and Mark scripted The Crusaders for DC/Impact in 1992, Painkiller Jane and Ash: Cinder & Smoke for Event Comics in 1997, X-O Manowar for Valiant Comics in 1997–1998, and JLA: Year One for DC in 1998–1999. In addition, after leaving as editor in 1996, Augustyn teamed with Waid to co-write The Flash for two stretches, from 1996–1997 and then again from 1998–2000. They collaborated on The Life Story of the Flash graphic novel and co-wrote the story in The Flash #142.

Marvel Portfolio Reviews & Panels at Baltimore Comic-Con 2017

Are you an aspiring or budding comic book artist looking to get your break with one of the biggest publishers in the industry? Or perhaps you’re just looking for some professional guidance as to how to elevate your work to that next level? A Marvel editor will be conducting portfolio reviews at the Baltimore Comic-Con and here’s what you need to know:

  • Portfolios will be submitted at the Information Booth between the hours of 1:00 pm – 5:30 pm on Friday, September 22nd and 11:00 am – 5:30 pm on Saturday, September 23rd. Review sessions for these submissions will take place the following day (Saturday and Sunday respectively).
  • Portfolios must contain your contact information. This includes your full name, cell phone number, and email address. You will also be asked to fill out a form with your contact information.
  • Portfolio reviews will happen on Saturday from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and on Sunday from 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm. If you will not or cannot be present at this time, do not leave your portfolio.
  • Portfolio review schedule will be available at the Information Booth at 11:00 am on Saturday and Sunday. If your name appears on the list, please ask for the portfolio review room location.
  • Do not leave original work with us. Whatever your portfolio contains, make sure you keep the original work. We cannot be responsible for any lost or misplaced work.
  • Please respect the Marvel editor’s time and opinion.
  • Focus on your sequentials. While cover artwork is important, most new artists are hired to do interiors.
  • Review sessions are limited to artists only.
  • Not all submissions will be chosen for review.

While in town, he has kindly agreed to make an appearance at Legend Comics & Coffee on Tuesday, March 28th for a free book signing from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM! We’ll have plenty of his work on hand at the UNO event and at the shop so stop in and pick up something to have signed. We hope to see all of the Legend Legion out for these special events!

Baltimore Comic-Con 2017 Tickets Now On-Sale

Baltimore Comic-Con is pleased to present our fans with an early holiday gift — tickets will be on sale from Black Friday to Christmas at a discount rate for next year’s show, taking place the weekend of September 22-24, 2017 at the Baltimore Convention Center in downtown Baltimore.

Tickets that are now on sale include:

  • VIP*

As always, children 10 and under are free for general admission with a paid adult general admission!

* VIP packages are a separate purchase from General Admission tickets (which will be required to participate in any VIP offerings). VIP ticket holders receive exclusive early admission to all three days of the show, as well as a gift package that includes a show t-shirt, the 2017 Baltimore Comic-Con yearbook, and more!
