Press Release:

The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE), a weekend-long celebration of independent comics, returns to Chicago for its fifth year on Saturday, June 11, and Sunday, June 12, 2016, from 11am to 6pm, with over 200 local, national, and international exhibitors at the Center on Halsted, located at 3656 North Halsted Avenue. Featuring comics for sale, workshops, exhibitions, panel discussions, and more, CAKE is dedicated to fostering community and dialogue among independent artists, small presses, publishers, and readers.

Free and open to the public, CAKE celebrates the diverse community of underground and alternative comics artists, publishers, and fans, both in Chicago and the United States, as well as the rest of the world. Comics, prints, and other artwork will be available for purchase, and in addition to the expo itself, several off-site events will occur throughout the weekend.

In addition to art for sale, the expo also features workshops, exhibitions, and panel discussions with special guests Chester Brown, Tyrell Cannon, Ezra Claytan Daniels, Sammy Harkham, Cathy G. Johnson, Laura Park, Patrick Kyle, Trina Robbins, and Leslie Stein. Independent publishers appearing at CAKE include 2D Cloud, Alternative Comics, Drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics Books, Koyama Press, Retrofit Comics, Secret Acres, and a number of Chicago-based publishers. For a full list of this year’s exhibitors, visit the website.

CAKE is an independent, not-for-profit, volunteer-run organization and would not be possible without the help of generous donations from supporters and sponsors, including Blick Art Materials, Busy Beaver Button Company, the Center on Halsted, Graham Crackers Comics, Challengers Comics, Halfwit Coffee, Print Ninja, Quimby’s Books, and Spudnik Press Cooperative.

IL – The Nameless City Signing

000000_faith-erin-hicks-nameless-city-fehPress Release:

Challengers is honored to host Eisner Award-winning cartoonist FAITH ERIN HICKS for a discussion and signing for the first volume in her new NAMELESS CITY trilogy. This event will start with a discussion between Faith Erin Hicks and local journalist (and comics fan) Web Behrens, with a signing to follow. Challengers will have copies of Nameless City Volume 1 on hand for sale, as well as other fantastic books from Faith’s career, but fans are invited to bring their own copies if they’d like. We’re enormously excited to have as talented a creator as Faith Erin Hicks here for an event. Don’t miss your chance to meet her!

This event runs from 6pm to 8pm on Wednesday, April 6th, and is intended for all ages. Bring the whole family!

Every nation that invades the City gives it a new name. But before long, new invaders arrive and the City changes hands once again. The natives don’t let themselves get caught up in the unending wars. To them, their home is the Nameless City, and those who try to name it are forever outsiders. Kaidu is one such outsider. He’s a Dao born and bred–a member of the latest occupying nation. Rat is a native of the Nameless City. At first, she hates Kai for everything he stands for, but his love of his new home may be the one thing that can bring these two unlikely friends together. Let’s hope so, because the fate of the Nameless City rests in their hands.

Faith Erin Hicks is a writer and artist in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her graphic novels include Zombies Calling, The War at Ellsmere, Brain Camp (with Susan Kim and Laurence Klavan), Friends with Boys, Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong (with Prudence Shen), the Bigfoot Boy series (with J. Torres), The Last of Us: American Dreams (with Neil Druckmann), the Eisner Award-winning The Adventures of Superhero Girl, and the Nameless City series.
