CA – Cottons: The Secret of the Wind Launch Party

Jim Pascoe and Heidi Arnhold appear in conversation with Cecil Castellucci at Skylight Books on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 7:30 PM to present and sign Cottons: The Secret of the Wind from First Second.

To her neighbors in the Vale of Industry, Bridgebelle is an ordinary rabbit. All day long, she toils at the carrot factory. After a hard day, she returns home to care for her ailing auntie. And whenever she’s out, she’s watchful of the murderous foxes who prey on her kind.

But Bridgebelle is not ordinary—she’s a rabbit with talents beyond her own understanding. Using cha, the mysterious fuel that powers her world, she can change everyday objects into thokchas—magical, transforming works of art. Bridgebelle makes thokchas because they’re beautiful. But there are those in her world who want to harness her powers and turn her art into a weapon.

Jim Pascoe is a writer, designer, and an award-winning creative director. His comics credits include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hellboy Animated, and the original series Undertown. He lives in Los Angeles, where he drinks coffee, sleeps very little, and believes in magic.

Heidi Arnhold is a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design whose published works have involved popular franchises like Star Trek, The Dark Crystal, and Fraggle Rock. The art in Cottons is powered by Heidi’s love for visual storytelling, all rabbits, and kale smoothies.

CA – Cecil Castellucci & Sally J. Pla Signing

Press Release:

Mysterious Galaxy is happy to host writers Cecil Castellucci and Sally Pla on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 7:00 PM for their new releases, Don’t Cosplay with My Heart and Stanley Will Probably Be Fine! We will be transforming the store into a mini comics & cosplay celebration for the evening. Cosplay, costumes, and general geekery strongly encouraged!

In Don’t Cosplay with My Heart, Edan Kupferman loves escaping into cosplay as her favorite character, Gargantua – especially when her real life is a mess. When a boy at school gets her into her element at ComicCon, she begins to learn how to be her own hero.

Cecil has written several young adult books and graphic novels, including The Plain Janes, Soupy Leaves Home, and Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure. In addition to writing, she is the Children’s Correspondence Coordinator for The Rumpus and the founding YA Editor at the LA Review of Books. She currently resides in Los Angeles.

In Stanley Will Probably Be Fine, a young boy escapes into comics when he gets overwhelmed by the world around him. He invents his own superhero, John Lockdown, and with his help tackles a scavenger hunt through downtown San Diego to overcome his fears. School Library Journal praises it as “an excellent addition to promote social-emotional learning.”

Sally’s previous work includes The Someday Birds and Benji, The Bad Day, and Me. She is a prolific traveler and an advocate for neurodiversity. She currently lives in Southern California with her family and giant goldendoodle pup.

CA – Don’t Cosplay with My Heart Signing

Author Cecil Castellucci appears at Vroman’s Bookstore on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 7:00 PM to her new novel DON’T COSPLAY WITH MY HEART.

When Edan Kupferman dresses up like her favorite character, Gargantua, she feels tall and powerful. That’s important right now, because her family is a mess, her best friend is gone for the summer, her crush is confusing, and Edan’s feeling small and not sure which end is up. When Edan’s cosplaying, she can be angry, loud, and not the good girl everyone thinks she is. And when she’s at conventions, she feels like she’s found her own Team Tomorrow. But when her personal life starts to spiral out of control, Edan has to figure out whether she needs a sidekick, or if she has the strength to be the hero of her own story.

Cecil Castellucci is the author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Boy Proof, The Plain Janes, First Day on Earth and the Eisner-nominated Odd Duck. She is currently writing Shade the Changing Girl, Vol. 1 Earth Girl Made Easy, an ongoing comic on Gerard Way’s DC Young Animal imprint. CA – Pashmina Signing

Nidhi Chanani appears in conversation with author Cecil Castellucci at Barnes & Noble on Monday, October 23rd at 7:00 PM for a presentation and signing of her debut graphic novel Pashmina.

About PASHMINA:
Priyanka Das has so many unanswered questions: Why did her mother abandon her home in India years ago? What was it like there? And most importantly, who is her father, and why did her mom leave him behind? But Pri’s mom avoids these questions–the topic of India is permanently closed.

For Pri, her mother’s homeland can only exist in her imagination. That is, until she find a mysterious pashmina tucked away in a forgotten suitcase. When she wraps herself in it, she is transported to a place more vivid and colorful than any guidebook or Bollywood film. But is this the real India? And what is that shadow lurking in the background? To learn the truth, Pri must travel farther than she’s ever dared and find the family she never knew.

In this heartwarming graphic novel debut, Nidhi Chanani weaves a tale about the hardship and self-discovery that is born from juggling two cultures and two worlds.

ABOUT NIDHI CHANANI:

Nidhi Chanani was born in Kolkata, India, and raised in Southern California. She holds a degree in literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She creates illustrations that capture the love in everyday moments. In 2012 she was honored at the White House as a Champion of Change for her art. Her illustrations are sold in boutiques along the West Coast and she’s worked with companies like Disney and Hasbro. Nidhi lives in the San Francisco Bay area with her husband, daughter, and two cats. Pashmina is her first graphic novel.
