Image Comics: Where Creators Own Action

There’s nothing like the thrill of a well-executed action scene, and no other medium can do what comics can. Ivan Brandon’s DRIFTER, Alex de Campi & Carla Speed McNeil’s NO MERCY, Nick Dragotta’s EAST OF WEST, Matt Hawkins’ IXth GENERATION, and Steve Orlando’s VIRGIL all feature some impressive action. Where’s the line between perfect and gratuitous? Is there a line? More importantly, how do you make entertaining action? Ask the experts.

Friday, October 9
12:15-1:15 p.m.
Location: Room 1A21

Image Comics: Where Creators Own Worlds

The beauty of comics is that they can transport you to another place, if you’ll let them. The comics of John Arcudi (RUMBLE), Bryan Edward Hill (POSTAL), Marjorie Liu (MONSTRESS), Declan Shalvey (INJECTION), and Jim Zub (WAYWARD) show us worlds as fantastic as any summer blockbuster, but executed so well that they burn themselves into your memory.

Saturday, October 10
4:15-5:15 p.m.
Location: Room 1A24

Image Comics: Where Creators Own Reality

What makes a weird idea “real?” Brian K. Vaughan & Cliff Chiang (PAPER GIRLS), Jonathan Luna & Sarah Vaughn (ALEX + ADA), and Joe Keatinge & Leila del Duca (SHUTTER) make the fantastic into an everyday affair while never losing sight of the fact that stunning readers is part of the magic of comics. Come see what’s so realistic about high-tech love, dark mysteries, and lion-gangsters.

Sunday, October 11
1:15-2:15 p.m.
Location: Room 1A21

Image Comics: Where Creators Own Craft

Comics artists put in a lot of work to get your favorite funny books on your bookshelves. What does it take to be a comics artist? How hard is it to create an aesthetic or find your style? Wes Craig (DEADLY CLASS), Shane Davis (AXCEND), Bob Fingerman (MINIMUM WAGE), Jason Latour (SOUTHERN BASTARDS), Riley Rossmo (RASPUTIN), and Matt Wilson (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE) create some of the best comics around, and have the answers you seek.

Press Release:

Harvey Award Winner Bryan JL Glass, as well as Wrestling/Media Superstar Brimstone, and Artists – Chris Grillo, Nick Mockoviak, Paul Benincasa, Amy Chance, and Darrel Goza – Join The GACC July Show Lineup

Allentown PA, June 27th – Top creators and award winners have announced plans to attend the July 2011 edition of the Lehigh Valley’s largest pop culture extravaganza – The Great Allentown Comic Con!

“The participation of local independent artists, as well as bringing recognized award winners and media guests, are part of what makes this such a unique show.” – Christopher D. Wertz, Show Founder and Promoter. “Where else can you find such a diverse group of talents, from the self-publishing fresh new faces, to long time industry favorites such as Bryan JL Glass or Brimstone.  At the same time, we are always working hard to keep the show as fun and family-friendly as possible.  It’s one of the reasons why we don’t charge for kids to come to the show.”

Unlike larger shows that charge $25 or more regardless of age, the GACC remains committed to fan-focused entertainment, with free entry to all 12 and under (with attending parent/guardian).  Door prizes are also a staple of many shows, and the GACC doesn’t disappoint with Busts, key comics and toys as frequent prizes all day.  For the July 16th show there is even a special prize – a CGC edition signed copy of Batman #232, the first appearance of Ra’s Al Ghul, by Neal Adams (Ra’s Al Ghul is to be featured again in the upcoming Christopher Nolan Batman movie, played by Josh Pence).  Fans interested in possibly winning this book can sign up online for free atwww.allentowncomiccon.com

Janson & Chaykin Offer Art Seminar
With over seventy five years of cumulative experience in the comic book industry, Klaus Janson and Howard Chaykin are all-too-well-versed in the ins and outs of making a career in our inkstained – and now, with all that digital stuff, carpal tunneled – business.   For the past few years, Klaus and Howard have been conducting an Artist’s Workshop for Marvel, offering invaluable insights, gleaned from those decades of experience, on narrative, storytelling, page design, and career management.

They’ve developed a fluid and comprehensive take on the inside game played by successful cartoonists – and a series of direct and vital techniques intended to drag newer talents out of a hobby and into a profession – without ever losing the joy all of us experience when we ply our craft.

Klaus and Howard have taken their seminar on the road to the renowned Savannah College of Art & Design, to great acclaim from students and faculty alike, and now they’re bringing a customized version of the workshop to the 2010 Baltimore Comic-Con. On Saturday, August 28th, from 1pm to 4pm, Messrs. Janson and Chaykin will entertain and enlighten with a lively, spirited, and very likely prickly and opinionated dissertation, followed, from 4 PM to 5 PM, by an hour of honest dissection of the work of several lucky attendees.  All class registrants will be eligible for the dissection lottery, so bring some of your work if you want to hear from these two very honest men!
To register for this very special class, please call our host store, Cards, Comics, & Collectibles @ 410-526-7410.  The cost for this professional seminar is $75.  Major credit cards will be accepted for payment.  The hour of honest dissection from 4pm-5pm will be exciting programming available to all ticketed attendees of the Baltimore Comic-Con.  Register now while space is still available!

Portfolio Reviews
Mark Chiarello, Art Director at DC Comics, will be doing portfolio reviews from 11am to 1pm at the Mark’s booth on both Saturday and Sunday. Think you’ve got the chops to make it as a pro at DC Comics?  Come and find out first-hand!

Todd McFarlane Signing
Attending the show on Saturday only this year, Todd McFarlane will be featured in a Spotlight panel session (room 308) from 12pm-1pm.  Following his panel, he will be signing in booth 2403 from 1:30pm-3:30pm.
