Creators conjure magic on a monthly basis, stretching the boundaries of reality to explore resonant themes under a veneer of high fiction. This group of creators has taken a legacy of wands, wizards, and incantations and tailored it to a modern context, where shape-shifting teen baristas search for missing love and reckless rockers parlay with infernal forces. Let this panel of spellbinding talent, including Sam Humphries (BLACKBIRD),Grace Ellis (MOONSTRUCK), Jeremy Haun (THE REALM), Johnnie Christmas(FIREBUG), Megan Hutchison (ROCKSTARS), and other special guests enchant you as they explain the alchemy behind their latest comics.

Image Comics has ushered in a new era of horror with cerebral writers and visceral artists elevating sequential-art dread to claustrophobic heights. From John Layman‘s kaiju free-for-all, LEVIATHAN, to Pornsak Pichetshote and Aaron Campbell’s reflective haunted house boiler, INFIDEL, comics are evolving terror to new personal, socially minded levels. Join a roster of the most sinister storytellers including Will Dennis (the editor of WYTCHES, GIDEON FALLS) and other special guests to discover how they’re altering an entire genre.

Saturday, July 21 @ 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Room 7AB
#WeBelieve in Suspense

Comic scribes wield character, dialogue, and panels with clockwork precision, leading readers through a gauntlet of plot beats designed to ratchet tension and escalate stakes. A whirlwind of growth and expansion followed: more comics, action figures, film, and award-winning animation.

Duggan is a writer and producer whose recent comics include Deadpool, Guardians of the Galaxy, Uncanny Avengers, and Chewbacca. After writing for G4’s gaming and pop culture show Attack of the Show, Duggan and comedian Brian Posehn wrote the black comedy THE LAST CHRISTMAS, illustrated by Rick Remender and published by Image Comics. His following Image project, INFINITE HORIZON with artist Phil Noto, was nominated for an Eisner in 2008. Farel was a co-founder and contributor to the comic anthology, Meathaus, and the artist on Palefire (Secret Acres, 2015) written by Mk Reed, PROPHET (Image Comics, 2012) by Brandon Graham, and Omega the Unknown (Marvel Comics, 2010) by Jonathan Lethem.

Sebela is a two-time Eisner-nominated writer living and working in Portland, Oregon. He’s the co-creator of books such as Heartthrob, High Crimes, We(l)come Back, Dead Letters, and Short Order Crooks, as well as having written books including Blue Beetle, Kiss/Vampirella, Detective Comics, Escape From New York, Captain Marvel, Injustice: Ground Zero, and DEMONIC.

LeHeup is the co-writer and co-creator of SHIRTLESS BEAR-FIGHTER! with Sebastian Girner and Nil Vendrell Pallach. A former editor, Jody worked on series including Uncanny X-Force, Deadpool, and Strange Tales for Marvel Comics as well as Quantum and Woody for Valiant Comics.

He teaches art at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and through his Digital Art Tutorials, which are available through Image Comics.

Guillory is known for his distinct, animated art style that has graced the pages of Image Comics, Marvel Comics, IDW, Dark Horse, and Valiant Comics. He’s won multiple Eisner and Harvey Awards and is co-creator with John Layman on the New York Times bestseller CHEW from Image Comics.

In 1992, Image Comics changed the face of the comic book industry and now–more than 25 years later–Image Comics continues to inspire creativity and foster innovation. In 2013, that tradition continued with the launch of IMAGE EXPO, an all-day event for fans, the retailer community, and the press to experience a showcase of exciting Image Comics announcements. Since then IMAGE EXPO has garnered mainstream news coverage and an industry reputation as one of the most newsworthy events of the year. IMAGE EXPO continues to grow in reach and influence.

IMAGE EXPO will be held at Leftbank Annex. The Leftbank Annex brings a sleek and well-coordinated event infrastructure to the raw, industrial ethic of a pre-war building. Through a skeleton of timber, concrete, brick, and steel, you’ll find large projectable surfaces, controlled lighting, superb access, and outstanding electrical infrastructure. You have the flexibility to transform the space into anything you can imagine, or to leave its authentic raw backdrop. The possibilities are endless.

About The Hero Initiative

The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need. Hero creates a financial safety net for yesterday’s creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It’s a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment.

Since its inception, The Hero Initiative has had the good fortune to grant over $500,000 to the comic book veterans who have paved the way for those in the industry today. For more information, visit www.heroinitiative.org or call 626-676-6354.
