J. Scott Campbell, one of the most popular artists in comics, has graciously accepted an invitation to be a Guest at the 2013 Big WOW! ComicFest in San Jose, CA this May 18-19! As one of the most requested guests for any convention, we are ecstatic to have the opportunity to bring him to meet his Bay Area fans. Campbell first exploded on the scene in the 90s with his book Gen 13. His dynamic storytelling and reputation for illustrating some of the most attractive women in the industry continued with his follow-up project, Danger Girl. His covers currently grace titles including Avengers, X-Men, The Black Bat and Miss Fury for Dynamite Comics, and many more!

Splash Page Comic Art Welcomes Joe Quinones

Splash Page Comic Art would like to welcome Joe Quinones to our family of talented artists!

Joe Quinones is a relative newcomer to the industry, having first been published by DC Comics for their now defunct Teen Titans GO series in 2007. He is probably best known for his collaboration with writer Kurt Busiek on the Green Lantern serial for Mark Chiarello’s Eisner Award-winning Wednesday Comics. Since then, Joe has illustrated a number of covers and short stories for DC, Marvel, and Dark Horse, with a current cover run on Captain Marvel. Joe also has some unannounced interior work on the horizon, as well as a Zatanna/Black Canary graphic novel, written by Paul Dini, due out at the end of 2013.

Frank Cho Plans for Big Wow 2012

Artist Frank Cho posted about his plans for Big Wow Comic Fest on his blog:

The great Big Wow Comic Fest in San Jose is just around the corner. Again this year, I’ll be holding one of my very rare art classes where I’ll teach drawing the female figure- veeeery sexy female figures. (This is a felony in some southern states, I believe.) Again this year, the lovely and culo-rrific Ivy Doomkitty will model for me at the live figure drawing class. She’ll be dressed as Dejah Thoris and belly dance for us. (She’s a professional belly-dancer. I kid you not.)

The wonderful thing about Big Wow Comic Fest is that it focuses on the art of drawing and painting comic books. There will be various free art workshops at the convention for the fans, including a costume making workshop for cos-players and acrylic/oil painting classes for fine art lovers. The fans can just watch or draw along with the artists, or just get your comic books autographed – because Big Wow Comic Fest is still a comic book convention.

Comic Art Fans Joins Big Wow! Comic Fest 2012

“Big Wow! ComicFest” is Northern California’s premier 2 day comic book comic art event, and Bill Cox is one of the heroes of the comic art world with the creation of Comic Art Fans, a website devoted to the love and sharing of comic book and fantasy original art. It only made sense that the two would eventually join forces.

Bill explains a little about Comic Art Fans and how he got into the world of CAF web works and his association with Big Wow!:

“I have always had a passion for comics and had always expected to one day work in the comics business and, in a round about way, I finally am. After graduating from Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA in 1991, I worked as a metalsmith before getting interested in web design in the mid-1990s. I started my first Internet consulting business in 1999 and, along with my wife Maureen and business partner Chris Haggard, we launched ComicArtFans.com in February 2003. Over the last nine years CAF has become the go-to site for comic art collectors and artists to showcase their collections and talent. With over a half million pieces of comic art on display, the 500,000 unique visitors to CAF each month have plenty to look at!”

“I’ve loved the whole comic book convention experience since attending Creation Con in Cleveland in the late 1970s. Those were some really fun shows and a great introduction to comics and comic creators. Since starting CAF and getting more involved with the comics as a business, I’ve always felt that there needed to be a show that put the spotlight on the people that created the comics, and gave attendees a different kind of interactive perspective on today’s comic creators. I’m also very interested in finding ways to get today’s youth more interested in comics and conventions are a great way to do that.

After attending the Big Wow! ComicFest in 2011 I really liked their approach to getting comic artists out in front of the audience. After the show I had the opportunity to talk more with the owners and they offered me the opportunity to become a part of the Con and I jumped at the chance. Although I have been approached a few times to get more involved with other conventions – or even to start my own show under a ComicArtFans.com umbrella – I knew I probably couldn’t take a leading role due to my other business obligations. With Big Wow! ComicFest I get to work with the things I’m most familiar with which is website building, marketing and promotion. It feels right.

I have known both Steve Morger and Steve Wyatt for a while and there isn’t a person I’ve spoken to that doesn’t have great things to say about them. So being asked to play a part in the future of Big Wow! ComicFest is truly an honor. I’m excited about the future of the Festival and the potential role that CAF and I will be able to play in it.”

Bill and his team have already contributed greatly to the Big Wow! show by creating an amazing website and helping to enhance the “on line” presence of the show.

Big Wow Adds Overseas Talent

Joining the line up for the 2012 Big Wow ComicFest are Juanjo Guarnido (Blacksad), from France and Liam Sharp (Gears of War) from England. Two Award Winning artists, both traveling to San Jose to meet their fans at the Big Wow! ComicFest.

Juanjo Guarnido, best known here is the US for his work on Blacksad published by Dark Horse Comics will be make a rare appearance at this years Big Wow! He will be traveling from Spain to greet his fans. Dark Horse themselves are very excited about his appearance, since they have never had the chance to meet this talented artist.

Also coming from overseas to join the talented lineup at Big Wow! ComicFest is award winning Heavy Metal and DC Comics artist, Liam Sharp. A friend of the show, Liam is pleased to return to Northern California to greet his fans.
