MD – Eight Million Ways to Die Signing

Press Release:

Big Planet Comics is excited to welcome John K. Snyder III for a signing of his new book “Eight Million Ways to Die” on Saturday July 14, 2018 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. His books will be for sale.

In crime-ravaged 1980’s New York, a troubled ex-cop turned unlicensed detective takes on his most dangerous case, hunting down a serial killer-hitman, and ultimately coming face-to-face with his deadliest enemy, himself, in John K. Snyder III’s graphic novel adaptation of the celebrated story by Lawrence Block.

Steeped in traditional pulp, Block’s writing has a true gift for capturing the art of conversation between his characters. These are the lowlifes of society, for whom Block occasionally finds redemption, but who are more often among the vilest beings in human existence. Snyder’s art both encapsulates and elevates these rough-cut gems in a graphic, grainy, and moody setting that evokes the dark, noir magazine covers of the period.

Lawrence Block is one of the most widely recognized names in the mystery genre. He has been named a Grand Master of the Mystery Writers of America and is a perennial winner of the prestigious Edgar and Shamus awards, as well as a recipient of prizes in France, Germany, and Japan. He also received the Nero Award, and Diamond Dagger from the British Crime Writers’ Association. He is a prolific author and is a devoted New Yorker and enthusiastic world traveler.

John K. Snyder III is an Eisner-nominated artist whose career spans over three decades. His previous literary adaptations include DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE and Joseph Conrad’s THE SECRET AGENT. He is also known for his work on DOCTOR MID-NITE and SUICIDE SQUAD for DC Comics, and is the creator of the groundbreaking alternative comic series FASHION IN ACTION.

DC – Why Art? Signing

Press Release:

Big Planet Comics is excited to welcome Eleanor Davis for a reading from her new book, “Why Art?” on Saturday March 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. She will give a reading from the book at 6 followed by a discussion and signing of her works. Her books will be for sale.

What is “Art”? It’s widely accepted that art serves an important function in society. But the concept falls under such an absurdly large umbrella and can manifest in so many different ways. Art can be self indulgent, goofy, serious, altruistic, evil, or expressive, or any number of other things. But how can it truly make lasting, positive change? In Why Art?, acclaimed graphic novelist Eleanor Davis (How To Be Happy) unpacks some of these concepts in ways both critical and positive, in an attempt to illuminate the highest possible potential an artwork might hope to achieve. A work of art unto itself, Davis leavens her exploration with a sense of humor and a thirst for challenging preconceptions of art worthy of Magritte, instantly drawing the reader in as a willing accomplice in her quest.

Eleanor Davis has been honored by the Eisner Awards and has won a Gold Medal from the Society of Illustrators. Her works include How to Be Happy (Fantagraphics Books, 2014), Libby’s Dad (Retrofit Comics/Big Planet Comics, 2016), You & a Bike & a Road (Koyama Press, 2017), and she contributed a short piece to the acclaimed comics anthology NOW (Fantagraphics, 2017). She lives in Athens, GA with fellow cartoonist Drew Weing. You can check out her work at www.doing-fine.com, and buy her mini-comics at www.littlehousecomics.com.
