Wizard Adds Horror Film Killer Short Competition to 2010 Events

Press Release:

NEW YORK and ANAHEIM, Calif., March 15, 2010 – From Frankenstein to Halloween to Saw, horror films have been a staple for moviegoers for generations. Now, fans attending Wizard Comic Con events in 2010, beginning next month in Anaheim, Calif., can take part in The NYC Horror Film Festival’s Killer Short Sudden Death Competition, in which short filmmakers will have their work viewed by a live audience and voted into the NYC Horror Film Festival program later this year. Comic Con audiences will have the opportunity to select one winner at each of six 2010 Wizard Conventions – Anaheim (April 16-18), Philadelphia (June 11-13), Chicago (August 19-22), Philadelphia (June 11-13), New England (Oct. 1-3), New York (October 7-10) and New Jersey (Oct. 15-17) – that will become part of the 2010 NYC Horror Film NYC Festival program later this year.

The competition is part of the “Horror Pavilion,” to be featured at Comic Con shows beginning at Anaheim. Aspiring filmmakers are invited to submit their work for consideration at each show.

“The addition of the Film Competition to the Wizard Comic Con series gives attendees who love horror an early look at some new works from talented filmmakers, and the chance to choose which they like best,” said Gareb Shamus, Wizard Entertainment CEO. “We are always trying to bring unique programming to the Series and, combined with the Horror Pavilion, the offerings in this area are even greater.”

NYC Horror Film Festival’s The Killer Short Sudden Death Competition is the ultimate horror and sci-fi short film series where the audience selects the winners. The brain child of Mauceri and Michael J. Hein, festival director of the NYC Horror Film Festival, The Killer Short Sudden Death Competition was first held at the Monster Mania convention, August 2009. The audience winner was a short from the Dublin-based company First Quarter Films, Wheels of Death, directed by Edward & Rob Kennedy. Coming together swiftly in order to meet the approaching convention deadline, the organizers were stunned by the over 40 submissions and an audience in excess of 150 attendees.

In six major cities, the competition offers filmmakers a unique opportunity to have their short films screened and voted on by hundreds of fans, and a chance to win a coveted programming slot at the 2010 NYC Horror Film Festival’s Killer Short Sudden Death Competition. Submissions will be accepted on the following schedule:

Comments Off on Jim Lee and Joe Quesada to Headline Big Apple Con

Press Release:

New York, NY (May 4, 2009) – Gareb Shamus, CEO of New York-based Wizard Entertainment, today announced that Joe Quesada, editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, and Jim Lee creator/publisher of DC Comics’ WildStorm Productions, will be co-Guests of Honor at “The 2009 National,” October 16-18, 2009 at Pier 94 in Manhattan.

“Jim, Joe and I grew up together and are long-time friends. Having them as co-Guests of Honor in NYC is historic, because they are the two most influential creators in comics today.” Shamus said. “Jim and Joe are both modern day legends. They represent everything that’s great about what we are passionate about.”
“I was honored when Gareb called me to be his inaugural guest of honor,” Lee said. “New York has always been a big part of my career and I can’t wait to go there and meet the fans.”

“Having grown up in New York, I was thrilled to be named guest of honor for the first new Big Apple con,” Quesada added. “I look forward to sharing my excitement with the hometown crowd and helping make “The 2009 National” a must attend event.”

Jim Lee began his rise to superstardom and comic book icon status on titles such as X-Men and Punisher War Journal before starting the Image imprint WildStorm Productions, which he eventually sold to DC Comics. Working with DC, Lee was able to return to his first love—drawing. Launching a number of top-selling events including Batman: Hush with Jeph Loeb and All Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder with Frank Miller, Lee continues as an innovator and currently finds himself working as Executive Creative Director of DC’s highly anticipated upcoming MMORPG, DC Universe Online.

Joe Quesada wowed fans for years as an artist on titles such as Batman: Sword of Azrael and his creator-owned series, Ash. After launching the highly successful Marvel Knights line that included Kevin Smith’s top-selling Daredevil series—which Quesada also penciled—the native New Yorker took over as Marvel’s editor-in-chief. Quesada’s reign lead to a new creative revolution at Marvel, including the launching of the Ultimate line, Grant Morrison’s New X-Men revamp and a focus on character-driven stories. Currently, Quesada still leads Marvel as EIC, but also finds time for his artistic endeavors including numerous Marvel covers and miniseries such as Daredevil: Father, which Quesada wrote and drew.

The initial launch of “The 2009 National” last month has caused event space to fill faster than expected, with limited space remaining. Those wishing to be a part of the event should contact::

Press Release:

Gareb Shamus, CEO of New York-based Wizard Entertainment, today announced he has acquired Big Apple Con, one of the trailblazing brands in the comic book and pop culture world, and the longest running annual show in New York City. The “new” Big Apple Con is moving to Pier 94 in Manhattan the weekend of October 16-18, 2009.

“I’ve been going to shows in New York City since I was a kid and I have a fondness for Big Apple Con,” Shamus said. “Today’s acquisition fulfills a dream of running a mega-show in New York City unlike anything there’s ever been.”

This move also enjoys tremendous support and enthusiasm from industry leaders. “Diamond is really looking forward to working closely with our friends at Wizard as they expand into the New York market,” said Bill Schanes, Vice President for Purchasing at Diamond Comics. “We anticipate a great event based on their ability to attract key talent, to promote and market the event, and at the same time to give consumers a tremendous value for their admission price.”

Ed Fleming, CEO/Founder of Video Game Expo (VGXPO), the largest East Coast expo of its kind, announced recently its partnership with Wizard World Philly. Now, VGXPO will expand its relationship to include Chicago Comic-Con and Big Apple Con, as well. “Our partnership provides VGXPO with the ability to rapidly grow our footprint from Philadelphia to Chicago and now New York City,” he said. “We look forward to working and sharing our passion for video games with all the fans in New York.”

Michael Carbonaro, the longtime and current producer of the show, will continue to provide his limitless creativity and enthusiasm to the show.

Exhibitors will need to act fast, though, as Big Apple Con has been sold out for years. Those wishing to be a part of this exciting event should contact:
