NEW YORK and AUSTIN, September 11, 2012 – Michael Rooker, who currently plays survivor “Merle Dixon” on the hit AMC series “The Walking Dead,” has joined the star-studded celebrity guest roster at Wizard World Austin Comic Con, set for Oct. 26-28, 2012, at the Austin Convention Center.  Rooker, who burst on the scene more than two decades ago in the title role in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, also will attend Wizard World New Orleans Comic Con, Nov. 30 – Dec. 2, 2012.

Rooker also had key roles in Sylvester Stallone’s 1993 hit Cliffhanger and the Denzel Washington/Angelina Jolie blockbuster The Bone Collector in 1999, as well as popular films such asMississippi Burning (1988), Sea of Love (1989) and Days of Thunder (1990).  While many have fit the brute, villain and psychopath type, he has also shown versatility in numerous “good guy” roles in his career.

Fans of “The Walking Dead” will have the unique opportunity to catch both Rooker and Norman Reedus, who plays Merle Dixon’s brother, “Daryl.”  The two will pose for dual photo ops with fans at Austin Comic Con.

NEW YORK and AUSTIN, August 15, 2012 – Seven stars of the popular series “Star Trek: The Next Generation” will gather for their first 25-year U.S. reunion at Wizard World Austin Comic Con, Oct. 26-28, 2012, at the Austin Convention Center.  All seven of the main stars are scheduled to attend, including the legendary Patrick Stewart, who portrayed the stern, determined Captain Jean-Luc Picard, commander of the USS Enterprise.

The “TNG” stars will be joined in Austin by Eliza Dushku (“Buffy The Vampire Slayer,”True Lies), WWE® Superstar CM Punk®, Dean Cain (“Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” “90210”), Anthony Michael Hall (Sixteen Candles, Weird Science), James Marsters (“Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” “Torchwood”) and the Boondock Saints trio of Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery and David Della Rocco, among others.

The other “TNG” actors on board include Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T. Riker), LeVar Burton (Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Lieutenant Worf), Marina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lt. Commander Data) and Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher).  The series, which ran for seven seasons from 1987 through 1994, garnered 18 daytime Emmys and was a hugely successful follow-up to the original “Star Trek” series from two decades earlier.

 – It’s an all-day kid’s extravaganza as Wizard World Austin Comic Con presents “Kid’s Day” on Sunday, November 13, at the Austin Convention Center.  Kid-friendly activities include meeting (and taking pictures with) characters like the lovable “Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!® from the Nickelodeon® series, Austin’s own superhero Jarret “The Defuser” Crippen and others, plus free face painting, balloon art, the impossibly cute Kids Costume Contest and special readings of “My Favorite Giant” by author Peter Mayhew, well-known for having portrayed “Chewbacca” in STAR WARS, and the new Border-Pups book “CrashBat” by comic book creator William “Brimstone” Kucmierowski.

Kids can stop by the Wizard World Digital Booth and pick up a free Wizard World Kids Adventure Passport, to complete activities all over Austin Comic Con and get a prize at the end of their journey.  Parents can look for the “Kid-Friendly” button on activities, vendors, booths and sessions throughout the convention floor.

Tweens and teens ages 11-17 can learn how to “Draw a Comic Character” at a one-of-a kind workshop with graphic novel artists and writing team Andy & Veronica Fish.

Crippen, winner of Stan Lee?s “Who Wants to be a Superhero?” competition series on SyFy, will be hosting Kid?s Day and helping youngsters get in on all of the fun.

Organizations From Across Texas Enhance Wizard World Experience

NEW YORK and AUSTIN, Texas, November 8, 2011 – More than 20 organizations from across Texas, from favorite genre movie and TV show fan clubs, podcasters and charities will be attending this weekend’s Wizard World Austin Comic Con, Friday through Sunday at the Austin Convention Center.  From cosplayers like the 501st Garrison/Central Texas, Lone Star Jedi and DFW Ghostbusters to podcasters such as the Down the Road Show and WGTR Radio to worthy charities like SCARE for a CURE and PurrKayla, various groups will be on site, meeting attendees and enriching the Wizard World experience.

Some groups that fans will run into on site include:

– 501st Garrison/Central Texas Squad, a chapter of the national organization which seeks to promote interest in Star Wars through the building and wearing of quality costumes, and to facilitate the use of these costumes for Star Wars-related events as well as contributions to the local community through costumed charity and volunteer work.
Airship Isabella, a group of artists, performers, and visionaries who have bound together to create characters who explore the boundaries of the Steampunk community and a menagerie of worlds to put them in.
– Ark Angel, whose “meetings” range from actual meetings of a business type to anything from watching movies at one of the Crew’s houses, camping trips, laser tag outings, bowling, LAN parties, role-playing games, or just sitting around a table playing games of all types.
– D20 Girls Project, a semi-unique business that combines Social Networking, Talent Management, and Event Services. D20 also arranges with manufacturers, publishers and conventions to provide trade show models and spokes models at gaming and fandom related industry conventions across the US.
– DFW Ghostbusters, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to dealing with ghosts, goblins and the undead, all while raising money to help those in need and give back to the community. .
– Doctor Who Fan Club of Austin, a local Austin Facebook Fan Club that participates in holding watch parties, bound together by the love of Doctor Who and living the values shared as Doctor Who fans.
– Down the Road Show, a great, fun-loving, light-hearted, and professionally produced entertainment-oriented talk show that focuses on discussions about film, music, TV, food, comics, charity events, local happenings, etc., and bacon.

– Lone Star Jedi, a community of fans who share a passion for sword fighting, lightsabers and are interested in the Jedi Martial Arts.
– Mandalorian Mercs Costuming Club, the world’s premier custom Mandalorian costume organization. With 35 chapters in 7 countries around the world, members of Mercs take part in a wide range of activities, including local and international conventions, charity events, and fan gatherings.
– Pendant Production Company, which since 2004 has brought more than 800 episodes of amazing audio drama! With over 10 million mp3 downloads of their full-cast productions, Pendant Audio is one of the most prolific and popular podcasting companies today.
– PurrKayla, Winner of fan-made online Superhero show, which was judged by fellow Superheroes.
– SCARE for a CURE, an Austin-based nonprofit organization that raises money for local cancer charities, “one SCREAM at a time!” Each year SCARE produces Austin’s only extreme, full contact, interactive haunted house adventure that is guaranteed to chill the depths of your soul.

Back by popular demand Wizard World returns to Texas

New York, NY (January 6, 2010) – Gareb Shamus, CEO of New York based Wizard Entertainment, today announced the launch of Austin Comic Con 2010 Wizard World Convention, to be held at the Austin Convention Center from November 12-14, 2010.

Wizard World Austin Comic ConFans have been asking for this event for some time. In an e-mail to Shamus, Larry Nickels Jr. wrote, “There are many people that I know of personally who would love to attend the convention if it is returned to our great state.”

Another fan, Matthew Adamic put it more succinctly with, “Bring back Wizard World Texas.”

“The fans have spoken and they want us back in Texas. We previously had a great experience here and are thrilled to be back,” said Shamus. “It’s a great city with a top-notch convention center and we’re really looking forward to seeing our fans at the type of pop-culture festival only we can bring.”

Austin is now the seventh city in the Wizard World Comic Con tour. Attendees can anticipate the strong caliber lineup of stars and exhibitors that fans across the nation have come to expect.
