TX – Feynman Signing

Jim Ottaviani signs on Thursday, September 29th, 2011 from 4:00PM – 7:00PM

Press Release:

Jim Ottaviani is the world’s preeminent writer of comics and graphic novels about science, and we’re lucky to be the only store in Austin to host him! Most recently, Ottaviani has written Feynman, the substantial graphic novel biography of Richard Feynman: quantum physicist, Nobel winner, bestselling author and safe-cracker. Other notable works include a biography of Niels Bohr and the fast-paced tale of the desperate lives of early paleontologists, and T-Minus: The Race to the Moon, from Aladdin books. Ottaviani has worked as a nuclear engineer and is currently employed as a reference librarian in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Brilliantly illustrated by Leland Myrick, Feynman tells the story of presents the larger-than-life exploits of adventurer, musician, world-class raconteur, and one of the greatest minds of the twentieth century: Richard Feynman, including his work on the Manhattan Project and the Challenger disaster. Anyone who ever wanted to know more about Richard P. Feynman, quantum electrodynamics, the fine art of the bongo drums, the outrageously obscure nation of Tuva, or the development and popularization of the field of physics in the United States need look no further than this rich and joyful work.

TX – Clerks II Screening

Brian O’Halloran, star of CLERKS as the legendary Dante Hicks, appears on Saturday August 6th at 4pm, courtesy of Austin Books & Comics.  Special animated CLERKS shorts from Powerhouse Animation.

This unconventional sequel to the cult classic CLERKS takes an awesome approach to the convention; it’s twelve years later, and the film visits the characters with that real-time gap.  The two witty slackers from the original film are now older, fatter, and their somewhat temporary jobs as convenient store clerks has reached a pathetic level as they approach their mid-thirties.

Things get even rougher when their place of employment, the Quick Stop, burns down, leaving them jobless as well as aimless.  As they settle on a fast food gig, both characters evaluate their lives.  Amid this crisis of ambition and masculinity, director Kevin Smith injects his characteristic wit and humor, bringing what is perhaps his most sophisticated and heartfelt comedy.

TX – Ready Player One Signing

Ernie Cline signs on Wednesday, August 24 from 4:00pm – 7:00pm!

Press Release:

Austin-based author Ernie Cline has expressed his love of pop culture as a spoken-word artist and screenwriter for the 2009 film Fanboys.  Now we’re thrilled to have him join us for the release of READY PLAYER ONE, his first novel!

Genre-busting, ambitious, and irresistibly charming, READY PLAYER ONE is a jaw-droppingly cinematic debut that features a breathtaking, meticulously imagined world that’s simultaneously futuristic and charmingly retro – a universe where light-speed-traveling DeLoreans battle it out with X-Wing fighters and entire planets are inspired by classic video arcades – combined with a plot that incorporates pop-culture esoterica such as Cap’n Crunch commercials, John Hughes movies, and giant Japanese robots.

Brandon says: “Ready Player One features a cameo from almost everything I’ve ever loved about pop culture, cleverly plugged into a story about the ultimate treasure hunt.  It’s my new favorite novel!”
