Inaugural C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay! Judged by Leading Cosplay Figures Opens for Registration Today

New York– February 14, 2014 – Today, ReedPOP, the world’s leading purveyor of pop culture events, and Wikia, the social universe of fandom and the ultimate source for powerful and relevant game expertise, announce the debut of a new cosplay championship at this year’s C2E2 in Chicago. The inaugural C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay will be the biggest and most prestigious costume contest in the United States, where veterans of the cosplay circuit and amateurs alike will battle it out for a shot at seizing the Crown and over $10,000 in cash and prizes. RedEye, part of Chicago’s Tribune Media Group, will serve as media sponsor for the inaugural event.

For the first time ever, C2E2 will invite cosplayers from across the U.S. to travel to the Windy City and have their creations critiqued by celebrity judges with established backgrounds in costume design and pop culture entertainment. This year’s judges include Ashley Eckstein (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Her Universe fashion line), Yaya Han (Heroes of Cosplay) and Nan Cibula-Jenkins (costume designer and head of costume design at The Theatre School at DePaul University). Fans will witness the spectacle and pageantry of a fun-filled competition celebrating the best cosplayers from around the country. This will not only be a celebration of pop culture, but a craftsmanship award show, with a pre-judging session and a stage display. All entries must represent a character or element from Comic Books, Movies & Television, Video Games, Anime or Fantasy.

“With some of the amazing costumes we’ve seen at our other shows, we thought it would make for a great showdown between the best of the best in cosplay,” said Lance Fensterman, Global Vice President of ReedPOP. “We’re thrilled to have teamed up with Wikia for the C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay to truly celebrate pop culture and the creativity of its Fans.”

“While cosplay has always been a passion of Wikia’s community of super-fans, the rise of ReedPOP’s events and our partnership around C2E2 allows us to engage even the most casual of enthusiasts,” said Eric Moro, Director of Programming, Entertainment at Wikia. “Starting on wikia.com and leading up to C2E2, the Cosplay Championships will put popular cultural on full display in all its glory. We’re excited to have our community play a central role.”

The debut of the C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay rides a surge in popularity for the cosplay culture and artistry most evident in Syfy channel’s docu-series “Heroes of Cosplay.” The C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay will be streamed live to a global audience on the C2E2 website.

Fans can register here for the C2E2 Crown Championships of Cosplay starting February 14. Each entrant will submit an application to be reviewed by the C2E2 team (one costume per entrant) and the top entrants will compete for top prize in Chicago. Press Release:

Star Wars™ fans are preparing for yet another epic journey this year as the 2nd annual Course of the Force lightsaber relay prepares for its launch July 9th through the 16th. This time, Her Universe™, a leader in female genre merchandise, and founded by actress and voice of Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ashley Eckstein, will be the apparel merchandise partner for the event. Her Universe will be selling this brand new merchandise for both men and women at the COTF “conival” events in San Francisco, Santa Monica, Huntington Beach and Oceanside Pier as well as at the Her Universe booth at San Diego Comic-Con International where the relay concludes. $5.00 from the sale of each shirt and $10.00 from the sale of each hoodie will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The Course of the Force is an Olympic torch-style relay that all aspiring Jedi Knights can take part in. The week long journey, which begins in San Francisco and ends in San Diego, benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundations of California. Renowned artist Russell Walks designed the 2013 look for Course of the Force that is featured on the merchandise.

“Since I began working as an artist with Lucasfilm, a lot of my childhood wishes have come true,” said Walks. “Designing the key art for the Course of the Force relay allowed me, in a very small way, to help some kids realize THEIR dreams, through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and I consider myself very lucky to have been asked to help.”

In addition to providing the apparel for this year’s Course of the Force, Eckstein is also returning, for the 2nd year in a row, as co-host with The Nerdist’s Chris Hardwick and other talent for the exclusive coverage of the relay.

“It’s an honor to return as a co-host and merchandise partner for Course of the Force,” said Eckstein. “This is truly a magical and Force-filled event. It was also a pleasure to work with Russell Walks. We are so lucky that he donated his time and talent to create this amazing design!”

He is such an accomplished photographer and I am honored that he will be sharing his time and talents with us!”

• In addition, Eckstein will be hosting a very special panel  with author Carrie Goldman based on her new book, Bullied – What Every Parent, Teacher, and Kid Needs to Know About Ending the Cycle of Fear. Her Universe Panel Announced for SDCC 2012

Press Release:

For the third year-in-a-row, actress and HER UNIVERSE™ Founder Ashley Eckstein will sponsor and host a panel at San Diego Comic-Con — but this time with a very special and unique participatory theme for girls at the convention. The panel, entitled, “Are You a Geek Girl Trendsetter? Show Off Your Style to the Fashion Experts and Win Prizes,” will take place on Saturday, July 14th from 6-7p.m. in room 25ABC and will feature an all-star group of experts made up of fashion buyers, designers, creators and actresses from the fashion and sci-fi worlds who will give their advice to fangirls on how to create their own style and look.  Eckstein (the voice of Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars: The Clone Wars) was inspired by the NBC television show Fashion Star to give female fans the opportunity to show their unique style and original designs to the experts through this panel!

Girls are asked to attend the panel in their own custom made or styled everyday geek/sci-fi inspired outfits and accessories. Up to 30 girls on a first come, first served basis will have the opportunity to show their outfits before our expert panel. Each panelist will then choose two girls who truly impressed them with their overall design and flair to become finalists.  Panelists will give their feedback and advice to the finalists and they will then choose a first, second and third place winner, each of whom will receive a special prize. The panel will be filmed by MTV Geek as part of their Comic-Con coverage.

Comic-Con is full of geek girls who create, design and construct their own fashions. Eckstein devised this panel as a way for girls to get feedback on their trendsetting creations from a special panel of fashion professionals:

Tarina Tarantino – World renowned designer whose jewelry, handbag, cosmetic and lifestyle collections can be found in the best luxury fashion stores internationally as well as her own trademark boutiques.

Ed Labay - Senior Buyer/Licensed Apparel for leading music and pop culture fashion retailer, Hot Topic, who helps determine the fashion trends for fanboys and fangirls through the chain’s more than 600 stores.

Courtney Lear – Social Media Manager for Hot Topic and self-proclaimed geekette who has her finger on the pulse of the fanboy and fangirl communities online.

Clare Grant – Actress (Robot Chicken and Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and producer and founder of Team Unicorn, a multi-media production team of fangirls whose videos have been seen by millions.

Her Universe & BBC Debut Doctor Who Collection

Press Release:

Her Universe™, a leader in female genre merchandise, announced today a license with BBC Worldwide, to create a collection of Doctor Who apparel for the ever-growing female fan base for the television show.

Her Universe recognized the burgeoning force of female Doctor Who fans and the need to create unique apparel and merchandise just for them. The international iconic brand and television hit Doctor Who is the longest-running sci-fi series in the world and continues to earn critical acclaim as BBC AMERICA’s highest rated series as well as the #1 downloaded series for iTunes in 2011. The new Doctor Who collection by Her Universe will premiere in July with fashion tops featuring images, characters and phrases from the Doctor Who universe all with fashion-forward designs for girls to look “Geek Chic.” To recognize their female Doctor Who fans, BBC Worldwide has created a special Doctor Who logo which will only appear on merchandise from the Her Universe collection.

Ashley Eckstein, founder of Her Universe and known to sci-fi fans as the voice of Ahsoka Tano on the hit animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars also designed and created the Her Universe merchandise. “Her Universe is a line for the fans,” said Eckstein. “Many of our design choices and decisions are influenced by our fans and Doctor Who was the #1 requested license by fangirls for us to pursue next. It was truly a dream come true when BBC Worldwide asked us to do their female merchandise and I am beyond excited to share this extraordinary announcement with our girls today! In the words of the Doctor, I feel like screaming Geronimo!”

Doctor Who apparel and accessories from the Her Universe collection will be available in the U.S. and Canada at both www.heruniverseshop.com and BBCAmericashop.com and through national retail outlets such as Hot Topic. Throughout 2012, the Doctor Who merchandise will also be available at select conventions including San Diego Comic Con.
