Daniel Clowes appears at the Parkway Central Library in conversation with Sam Briger on Thursday, March 3, 2016 at 7:30 PM to speak about his new graphic novel PATIENCE!
Celebrated graphic novelist and Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Daniel Clowes is the multiple Harvey, Ignatz, and Eisner Award-winning creator of the alternative comic Eightball. His graphic novel Ghost World was adapted into an acclaimed film directed by Terry Zwigoff and starring Thora Birch. Called “the country’s premier underground cartoonist” (Newsweek) and “a bona-fide cult hero” (The New Yorker), he is a frequent cover artist for The New Yorker. His new graphic novel is a psychedelic science-fiction love story, veering from violent destruction to deeply personal tenderness.

Daniel Clowes’ beloved comics and graphic novels have reached millions of fans right where they live, and beyond: from the stultifying suburban sprawl of Ghost World to the bleak-yet-uplifting Mister Wonderful, he’s delved into the lives of strivers and cynics, turning up their darkest thoughts and their most generous impulses, often in the same panel. He returns to the page with Patience, a gorgeous trip into sci-fi psychedelia, unlike anything he’s done before, yet simultaneously and unmistakably “Clowesian.”
Join Daniel Clowes in conversation with Nicole Rudick, managing editor of the Paris Review, for a celebration of the release of Patience on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at 7:00 PM!

Daniel Clowes will make his first Los Angeles appearance in several years at Meltdown Comics on June 5th to celebrate the release of The Complete Eightball, a two-volume collection of the influential and iconic comic book series, from Fantagraphics Books.
On Friday, June 5th, from 6-10 PM, Meltdown will be opening its Los Angeles doors to fans new and decades strong for a night complete with prizes, a book signing, costume contest, and an interview between Clowes and Mark Frauenfelder from Boing Boing.
Creator of touchstone stories such as “Ghost World,” “Art School Confidential,” and “Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron,” Daniel Clowes changed the landscape of comics when he began publishing Eightball with Fantagraphics Books in 1989. To commemorate the 25th anniversary of its release, and celebrate the future, the biggest comic book retailer in California, Meltdown Comics, is pulling all the stops for this one-night-only engagement. Meltdown and Clowes’s relationship dates back over 20 years, when Clowes created the venerable Meltdown mascot, Mel, in the early days of the store.
From Associate Publisher, Eric Reynolds says, “It was literally unfathomable for us to consider any Daniel Clowes / Complete Eightball event schedule that didn’t include Meltdown Comics. I don’t know if there’s a bookseller in the country that has done more to promote Eightball and the work of Daniel Clowes over the past two decades. This is going to be a barnburner.”
