MA – The Magician’s Hat Signing

Malcolm Mitchell, wide receiver for the New England Patriots, appears at An Unlikely Story on Sunday, February 25, 2018 from 1:30 – 4:00 PM to sign his new book THE MAGICIAN’S HAT! Get tickets at the link…

Press Release:

An Unlikely Story is throwing a huge party in celebration of the launch of Malcolm Mitchell’s new picture book, The Magician’s Hat! There will be magicians, an inspiring presentation by Malcolm, and some very special guests to congratulate Malcolm on his book launch! Malcolm will be reading his book, The Magician’s Hat, answering questions from kids, and signing his book.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Super Bowl champion and literacy crusader Malcolm Mitchell presents the story of a magician who reveals an awe-inspiring treasure from his bag of tricks — books that make every kid’s dream come true!

This is not your typical afternoon at the library — a magician invites kids to reach into his hat to pull out whatever they find when they dig down deep. Soon — poof! — each child comes away with something better than they could’ve imagined — a book that helps them become whatever they want to be, and makes their dreams come true through pages and words, and the adventures that follow. But each child can’t help but wonder, What’s really making the magic happen?

ABOUT READ WITH MALCOLM:
Read with Malcolm is a youth literacy initiative founded by former University of Georgia wide-receiver and current New England Patriots rookie, Malcolm Mitchell. The organization’s goals are twofold: 1) to introduce book ownership to students in households where reading is not a priority and 2) to improve literacy in schools with below grade-level reading skills. In 2015, Read with Malcolm launched Share the Magic Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, to promote the long-term benefits of being an active reader to students served by Title I schools and underserved communities. To help us continue to inspire young readers, please visit www.readwithmalcolm.com for more information about Malcolm’s youth literacy programs.

MA – All’s Faire in Middle School Signing

Victoria Jamieson appears in conversation with Jeff Kinney (creator of Diary of a Wimpy Kid) at An Unlikely Story on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 5:00 PM to introduce her new graphic novel, ALL’S FAIRE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL! Following her presentation, there will be a Q & A with Victoria and Jeff, then a book signing.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
From the author of the Newbery Honor winner Roller Girl, a heartwarming graphic novel about starting middle school, surviving your embarrassing family, and life at the Renaissance Faire that’s perfect for fans of Raina Telgemeier.

Eleven-year-old Imogene (Impy) has grown up with two parents working at the Renaissance Faire, and she’s eager to begin her own training as a squire. First, though, she’ll need to prove her bravery. Luckily Impy has just the quest in mind—she’ll go to public school after a life of being homeschooled! But it’s not easy to act like a noble knight-in-training in middle school. Impy falls in with a group of girls who seem really nice…until they don’t. For the first time, she’s embarrassed of her thrift shop apparel, her family’s unusual lifestyle, and their small, messy apartment. And when her new friends encourage her to do something mean, Impy goes along with it. Before long, Impy doesn’t even recognize herself. Is she the dragon in her own story or the heroic knight?

As she did in Roller Girl, Victoria Jamieson perfectly -and authentically—captures the bittersweetness of middle school life with humor, warmth, and understanding.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Victoria Jamieson is the creator of the Newbery Honor winner Roller Girl. She received her BFA in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and worked as a children’s book designer before moving to Portland and becoming a freelance illustrator. She has also worked as a portrait artist aboard a cruise ship, and has lived in Australia, Italy, and Canada. She maintains a not-so-secret identity as Winnie the Pow, skater with the Rose City Rollers roller derby league and has a not-so-secret past as a Renaissance Faire groupie.

MA – Samurai Rising Signing

Comments Off on MA – Samurai Rising Signing

0000000-samurai-risingGareth Hinds appears at An Unlikely Story on Sunday, March 13, 2016 at 2:00 PM to introduce his newest collaboration, Samurai Rising: The Epic Life of Minamoto Yoshitsune, an illustrated historical account written by Pamela S. Turner. Gareth will talk about illustrating his latest book, and conduct a drawing demonstration. Watching Gareth in action is something any graphic novel fan or budding artist won’t want to miss!

About the Book:
Minamoto Yoshitsune should not have been a samurai. But his story is legend in this real-life “Game of Thrones.”
This epic tale of warriors and bravery, rebellion and revenge, reads like a novel, but this is the true story of the greatest samurai in Japanese history.

When Yoshitsune was just a baby, his father went to war with a rival samurai family and lost. His father was killed, his mother captured, and his brothers sent away. Yoshitsune was raised in his enemy’s household until he was sent away to live in a monastery. He grew up skinny and small. Not the warrior type. But he did inherit his family pride and when the time came for the Minamoto to rise up against their enemy once again, Yoshitsune was there. His daring feats, such as storming a fortress by riding on horseback down the side of a cliff and his glorious victory at sea, secured Yoshitsune’s place in history and his story is still being told centuries later.

About the Artist:
Gareth Hinds is the creator of critically-acclaimed graphic novels based on literary classics, including Beowulf (which Publisher’s Weekly called a “mixed-media gem”), King Lear (which Booklist named one of the top 10 graphic novels for teens), The Merchant of Venice (which Kirkus called “the standard that all others will strive to meet” for Shakespeare adaptation), The Odyssey (which garnered four starred reviews and a spot on ten “best of 2010” lists), Romeo and Juliet (which Kirkus called “spellbinding”), and Macbeth (which the New York Times called “stellar” and “a remarkably faithful rendering”). Gareth is a recipient of the Boston Public Library’s “Literary Lights for Children” award. His books can be found in bookstores and English classrooms across the country, and his illustrations have appeared in such diverse venues as the Society of Illustrators, the New York Historical Society, and over a dozen published video games.
