At last it can be revealed! After months of planning and plotting – here it is. It’s the panel schedule for the 2011 Baltimore Comic-Con! 

Update:  We’ve listened to our fans and the costume contest has been rescheduled. It will now be held at 3:00pm on Saturday. Registration forms can be handed in near table #2403 in the main convention hall. With $1,000 up for grabs for the best overall costume and prizes for each of the 10 categories, this is one event all of you cosplayers don’t want to miss! 11:00-12:00 – Creating Your Comic/Manga from Concept to Publication – Husband and wife creators (and Harvey Award Nominees) Comfort Love and Adam Withers teach you how to create your own comic. The entire process – concepting, scripting, thumbnails, pencils, color, PDF’s and CBZ’s, printing, distribution, the web, and even maximizing your convention experience will be covered in this seminar. Recently his collection of rejected New Yorker cartoon I THOUGHT YOU WOULD BE FUNNIER won the Eisner Award for Best Humor Publication and is up for a Harvey this weekend. Join Shannon Wheeler and his trusty sidekick BOOM! Studios Marketing Director Chip Mosher as they look back on Shannon’s meteoric rise and fall in comic books. Oh, yeah! Creators John Gallagher and Steve Conley moderate over a panel of experts, including Dan Parent (Archie), Steve Hamaker (Bone, Fish & Chips), Mike Maihack (Cleopatra in Space!), Rich Faber (Roboy Red!) and Todd Dezago (Perhapanauts, Superhero Squad). Those in attendance will get a special card allowing them to download a FREE Exclusive BUZZBOY story from John Gallagher, and one person will win the opportunity to make a cameo appearance in “Leon, Protector of the Playground,” the new all-ages graphic novel by Jamar Nicholas.

CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein delivers a gripping history of comics censorship from the 50s to today, and talks about life after the Code.

12:00-1:00 – Insight Studios – Meet Baltimore’s very own legendary creators of some of comic-dom’s most explosive stories and art with this amazing retrospective – and new announcements of projects! Focusing on Marc Hempel, Robert Tinnell, and Mark Wheatley, get an insider’s perspective on their inner-workings as artists and writers. Moderator, Mike Gold highlights the diversity and originality of these very different creators.

1:00-2:30 – Frank Cho Live Drawing Demonstration – Watch and be amazed as Frank Cho creates a drawing masterpiece right before your eyes. Audience will suggest one character, one action, one setting and Frank Cho will draw it in one hour on stage. The original art created by Frank Cho will be raffled off at the end of the drawing demonstration. Raffle tickets available at Frank Cho’s booth.

The Fall for the Book Festival at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, has chosen Stephen King as the 2011 recipient of the Mason Award for his “extraordinary contributions to bringing literature to a wide reading public.” He’ll receive the award at a ceremony on September 23, 2011, with a limited book signing following the event.

King is the author of more than 50 worldwide bestsellers, and his career has spanned nearly five decades, from his debut novel “Carrie,” to his up-coming novel “11/22/63? due to be released November 8th.

Free tickets for the Mason Award Presentation will be available to the general public the morning of August 15th and are available through George Mason University’s Center for the Arts box office. Ticket Request Forms will be available beginning August 15th at 9AM EST.

Baltimore Comic-Con Welcomes the Creators of the New DCU in 2011

With September’s relaunch of 52 titles from DC Comics, the Baltimore Comic-Con is happy to announce the addition of three creators heading up those titles – Scott Snyder, Paul Levitz, and Ron Marz - to the line-up for this year’s show.

Scott Snyder, who will be writing DC’s Batman and Swamp Thing, made a huge impact on the comic industry of the last year with his work on the New York Times bestselling series, American Vampire and his critically-acclaimed run on Detective Comics. Snyder is currently writing the Flashpoint tie-in miniseries, Project Superman. Snyder has been nominated for two Harvey Award this year in the categories of Best New Series and Most Promising New Talent for his work on American Vampire.

Paul Levitz, who will continue his run as writer on Legion of Super-Heroes in September, is a mainstay in the comic industry. For over 35 years, Levitz has served as a writer, editor, and executive at DC Comics. His work on the Legion throughout the late-’70s and ’80s is widely-regarded as some of the most quintessential stories in the DCU. In addition to writing Legion, it has just been announced that Levitz will be writing the 6-issue mini-series, The Huntress, beginning in October. This year, he received a Harvey Award nomination in the category of Best Biographical, Historical or Journalistic Presentation for his work on 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Myth-Making.

Ron Marz, who will usher Wildstorm’s Voodoo into the DCU in September, has been writing comics professionally since the early-’90s, having worked for such companies as Marvel, Dark Horse, CrossGen, Devil’s Due, Valiant, and DC. Well-known as one the creators who helped to revitalize both the Green Lantern franchise in the late-’90s and Top Cow’s Witchblade in 2004, Marz is currently working on the Top Cow series, Artifacts.

“DC’s announcement about the relaunch of their entire super-hero line rocked the comic industry and will redefined their characters for years to come,” said Marc Nathan, show promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “We’re so excited to have some of the A-crop creators behind this momentous move join us for this year’s show!”

GraniteCon 2011 Report

Double Midnight Comics hosted their annual Granite State Comicon in Manchester, NH this past Sunday. Despite the wet weather, it was a packed house with several cosplayers showing up in character. Guests included local writers of The Cape Joe Hill and Jason Ciaramella plus artist Zach Howard, who received many well-wishes on their recent Eisner Award nomination. Artist Sean Gordon Murphy talked about his upcoming storyarc on American Vampire and what it was like working with Grant Morrison on Joe the Barbarian. And several contributors, including co-creators Rich Woodall and Adam Miller, from the ZombieBomb Comic Anthology were on hand to meet fans. It may only be a one-day show but supporting local homegrown conventions like this is the best way to encourage them to grow and for retailers to bring in more comic creators for signings. The Walking Dead Invades Granite State Comicon 2011

Granite State Comicon returns to the Radisson Center of New Hampshire on May 15th! Special guests include Tony Moore, Sean Murphy, and Zach Howard with many more to come!  Be sure to come out to the most exciting one-day comic show in the northeast!

Special Guest: Tony Moore!

Tony Moore is a cosmic cowboy and comic creator from a small Kentucky town, where he was raised on a steady diet of fried game, cathode rays, and funnybooks. Moore’s notable illustration work launching The Walking Dead was nominated for two Eisner Awards (2004: Best New Series, and 2005: Best Cover Artist), and The Walking Dead has since become cable’s highest-rated drama, airing on AMC.

Moore went on to co-create the booze-fueled space western Fear Agent with Rick Remender at Dark Horse, and the creepy gonzo thriller The Exterminators with Simon Oliver at DC/Vertigo. His recent work includes wild runs on Marvel Comics’ Ghost Rider and Punisher.

He spends his days shooting at things in the woods, and helping his wife chase their squealing baby daughter.

Special Guest: Sean Murphy!

Sean Murphy was born in Nashua, NH in the fall of 1980. He got interested in comics in grade school and spent many afternoons of his childhood drawing instead of making friends.

His formal education started in Salem, NH as an apprentice to Leslie Swank, local painter, cartoonist and WWII vet. After graduating Pinkerton Academy high school in 1999 he attended Massachusetts College of Art (Boston) and then the Savannah College of Art and Design. He started working professionally before graduating with titles like Star Wars and Noble Causes, then moved to Hollywood while working on various other projects for Dark Horse Comics. His career started gaining more steam when DC Comics offered him titles like Hellblazer, Batman/Scarecrow: Year One and Teen Titans. In 2005 he published his first original graphic novel called Off Road, which went on to win an American Library Association award for young adults. In 2009 he teamed with writer Grant Morrison for the critically acclaimed Joe the Barbarian for Vertigo Comics. In 2010 he will be teaming with writer Scott Snyder for an American Vampire mini-series.

Special Guest: Zach Howard!

Zach Howard may not look like anyone likes him, but the truth is: almost four people like Zach. First there’s his mom – she definitely likes him.

Then there’s Zach’s mailman – he always smiles when he sees Zach. (What more proof does one need?) The third person is Brett Butler, the comedienne. Zach is a big fan of hers and once at one of her shows Zach wouldn’t stop laughing. “I like this guy,” she said as she pointed generally in Zach’s direction. The whole crowd heard her. And last but not least is Zach’s dog, Zach Junior.

If you think there’s a chance you’d like Zach, please, please, please become a member of the Zach Howard Appreciation Society. Registration has been open since 1980, and if you’re the first to sign up you’ll receive a signed picture of Zach, delivered by Zach himself. Please be sure to have a meal waiting for him when he arrives. (He loves Dinty Moore!)

Currently you can find Zach living in Colorado, where he draws pictures of men in tights for Warner Brothers and Disney. Zach insists the woman living in his house is his wife, but no documentation has been provided to substantiate this claim.
