Long Beach Comic Con held it’s 2nd annual convention at the Long Beach Convention Center on Halloween weekend this year. With the success of the inaugural show, I was a bit disappointed to see a smaller crowd this year. The show did have some strong guests, featuring fan favorites J. Scott Campbell, Amanda Conner, Tim Sale, and Mike Mignola. However, it seemed that Halloween weekend proved that it’s the kids and family aspect that drive people to come, and can really dictate the success of a show. The people that did attend had a wonderful time, meeting their favorite creators, buying some show exclusives, and enjoying the Halloween festivities with costumes galore.

DC COMICS HEADS TO NEW YORK COMIC CON
Dan DiDio, Jim Lee, Geoff Johns and J. Michael Straczynski Are Guests of Honor
Other Top Guests Headline Panels and In-Booth Signings!
Norwalk, CT, September 15, 2010: DC Comics has revealed some of the top guests who will be on hand to meet and greet fans at the annual New York Comic Con (NYCC) which will take place October 8 – 10, 2010 at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City. Acclaimed writer J. Michael Straczynski will join DC executive talent including co-publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee as well as superstar writer and Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment Geoff Johns as Guests of Honor. Other all-star DC creators who will be participating in various panels and activities at NYCC include John Arcudi, Art Baltazar, Matthew Clark, Amanda Conner, Tony Daniel, Shane Davis, David Finch, Franco, Derek Fridolfs, Adam Hughes, JT Krul, Francis Manapul, Sean Murphy, Dustin Nguyen, Jimmy Palmiotti, Joe Prado, Ivan Reis, Nicola Scott, Peter Snejbjerg, Scott Snyder, Peter J. Tomasi and Freddie Williams II.
Officials at DC note that many of the panels featuring their creators will include announcements and other “behind-the-scenes” information about DC Comics, Vertigo and WildStorm comics and graphic novels. In addition, DC staff members will welcome thousands of fans to DC’s 3000 square foot booth centrally located on the convention floor which will feature talent signings, free giveaways and early peeks at the newest action figures, statues, busts and other amazing collectibles on display from DC Direct.

DAN DIDIO was named Co-Publisher of DC Comics with Jim Lee in February 2010. Prior to his new role, he served as the Senior VP-Executive Editor, DC Universe for DC Comics. Since 2003, he has spearheaded such bestselling titles as Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis, 52, and Final Crisis. Prior to joining DC, Dan worked in television for CBS and ABC public relations and program development. His writing can also be seen in The Outsiders.
JIM LEE is Co-Publisher of DC Comics. Prior to his current post, Lee served as Editorial Director, where he oversaw WildStorm Studios and was also the artist for many of DC Comics’ bestselling comic books and graphic novels, including ALL STAR BATMAN AND ROBIN, THE BOY WONDER, BATMAN: HUSH, and SUPERMAN: FOR TOMORROW. He also serves as the Executive Creative Director for the DC Universe Online (DCUO) massively multiplayer action game from Sony Online Entertainment (SOE).
GEOFF JOHNS is the Chief Creative Officer for DC Entertainment as well as one of the most the most prolific and popular of contemporary comic book writers. He has written highly acclaimed stories starring Green Lantern, Superman, the Flash, Teen Titans, and the Justice Society of America, as well as the bestselling graphic novels BLACKEST NIGHT and INFINITE CRISIS. Johns has also written for various other media, including the acclaimed “Legion” episode of SMALLVILLE and the fourth season of ROBOT CHICKEN. He is writing the story of the DC Universe™ Online (DCUO) massively multiplayer action game from Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) and co-producing the upcoming Green Lantern feature film.
J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI is the only comics writer in history to win the Eisner Award, the Hugo Award (twice), the Inkpot Lifetime Achievement Award, SFWA’s Ray Bradbury Award and be nominated for a British Academy Award for Screenwriting (for Changeling). As a comics writer he has written The Amazing Spider-Man, Superman, Wonder Woman and Thor, among others; as a writer for TV and film, his credits include Ninja Assassin, Babylon 5, Jeremiah and Twilight Zone. He’s worked with Clint Eastwood, Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg, Paul Greengrass and others. His current in-development credits include Forbidden Planet (for Warners), Shattered Union (for Disney/Bruckheimer), and Lensman (for Universal) More projects will be announced at NYCC. He never sleeps.

New York Comic Con Announces First Round of Guests for 2010

NEW YORK COMIC CON ANNOUNCES FIRST ROUND OF GUESTS!
Comics Are “Heart and Soul” of Convention!
Norwalk, CT, July 9, 2010: New York Comic Con (NYCC) has today announced its first major round of comic guest appearances at this year’s show which will take place at the Jacob K. Javits Center in New York City, October 8 – 10, 2010. Convention officials note that while the final NYCC guest list will span the pop culture universe, including authors, writers, film actors and directors, by far the largest contingent of guest appearances will be from the world of comics. A few of the many guests who have been revealed in today’s announcement include: Adam Hughes, Steve McNiven, Steve Epting, Bob Layton and Greg Pak. Organizers note that Adam Hughes was also a guest at NYCC in 2008. Hughes has drawn for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, and many other companies, and he has also done work for Lucasfilm and Warner Bros. He is currently working on many projects, including a hardcover collection of his work for DC Comics.
In separate announcements, NYCC organizers have revealed that Stan Lee will be this year’s “Spotlight” Guest of Honor at New York Comic Con and John Romita and John Romita, Jr. will be appearing together as Keystone Guests of Honor at the show.
“While New York Comic Con has certainly grown and evolved in new directions over the past five years, we remain a show which is dedicated to providing a home for the absolute best and most respected comic book talent,” notes Lance Fensterman, Vice President for ReedPOP and Show Manager for NYCC. “Comics are the heart and soul of NYCC and we are enormously grateful to all the leading comic book celebrities who make themselves available to the thousands of fans who attend our show.”

What’s up DC Nation? This week we’re on our way to the first ever C2E2 show in Chicago and our levels of anticipation are running very high. Not only is this a new show but we have a certifiably awesome list of talent making an appearance as well. Take a look:

A Benefit for Ed Hannigan at WonderCon

The Cartoon Art Museum and The Hero Initiative present the museum’s Annual WonderCon Weekend Party, which will be held on Friday, April 2, from 8 PM to 11 PM. A portion of the proceeds from this special event will go to comic book artist Ed Hannigan, whose work is featured in the CartoonArt Museum’s current exhibition Ed Hannigan: Covered.
Tickets for this event will be sold on a sliding scale. Ed Hannigan, who is suffering from multiple sclerosis, will receive a portion of the proceeds of all ticket sales above $20. Those who donate $35 or more will receive a special gift bag courtesy of the CartoonArt Museum. A silent auction will be held at the party, and all proceeds from the auction will go directly Hannigan.
Many of the top talents from DC Comics and Marvel Comics will be in attendance as special guests of the CartoonArt Museum and the Hero Initiative. Confirmed guests at press time include Arthur Adams, Amanda Conner, Sergio Aragones, Joyce Chin, Jimmy Palmiotti, Greg Rucka, Gail Simone, Jen Van Meter, and more to be announced.

Hannigan worked extensively for Marvel Comics and DC Comics throughout the 1970s and 1980s, on such fondly remembered titles as Green Arrow, The Defenders, and Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man. Today, Hannigan is 58 years old and has multiple sclerosis. The Hero Initiative, a charitable organization that provides financial assistance to comic book professionals in need, and Marvel Comics have collaborated on a tribute book, Ed Hannigan: Covered, that features highlights from Hannigan’s artistic career. The CartoonArt Museum will display some of Hannigan’s most notable covers alongside the cover and complete interior artwork for one of his most famous single-issue stories, The Spectacular Spider-Man #64, which introduced the crime-fighting duo Cloak and Dagger.

C2E2 Adds Women Creators to 2010 Guest List

WOMEN CREATORS AMONG MAJOR GUEST APPEARANCES AT C2E2
Gail Simone, Amanda Conner and Colleen Doran Join High Profile Personalities
Norwalk, CT, February 3, 2010: Women creators form a significant part of the powerful programming that is being put together by officials at C2E2. The new pop culture show is set to launch at Chicago’s McCormick Place Convention Center, April 16 -18, 2010 and the women who will be participating in various appearances and activities are the best in their field and they represent the convention’s overall goal to focus on top notch talent. The new guests who will be appearing at C2E2 include award-winning and critically acclaimed writer Gail Simone, and renowned illustrators Amanda Conner and Colleen Doran. These creators join previously announced female creator Jill Thompson. All the women who will be featured guests at C2E2 are accomplished artists who have wide and loyal audiences.
Other guests who have already been announced for C2E2 include: Chuck Dixon, Steve Epting, Jackson Guice, Gene Ha, Bob Layton, David Lloyd, Steve McNiven, Mike Mignola, Mark Morales, Mike Norton, Joshua Ortega, Mike Perkins, Khoi Pham, Alex Ross, Jeff Smith, Ben Templesmith, David Uslan, and Ethan Van Sciver.

The women artists joining the pop blowout at C2E2 include:
Amanda Conner: Amanda Conner started out working as an illustrator for New York ad agencies Kornhauser and Calene and Kidvertisers. She worked on a number of launches and campaigns including Arm and Hammer, PlaySchool and Nickelodeon; however, loving comic books and cartooning the most, Amanda found herself working with Marvel on their Barbie and Disney lines. At the same time, she was illustrating Soul Searchers & Co. for Claypool Comics and was soon working on other Marvel projects, such as Excalibur and Suburban Jersey Ninja She-Devils. Amanda then moved on to do what is probably her best known work — several years as penciler on the hit series Vampirella for Harris Comics. While illustrating Vampirella, Amanda worked with the top writers in the field, Grant Morrison, Mark Millar and Warren Ellis. Continuing to expand her horizons, Amanda illustrated the best-selling Event Comic Painkiller Jane vs. The Darkness and went on to work on Painkiller Jane #0. She also wrote and illustrated a story for Kid Death and Fluffy. Since then, Amanda has moved on and has worked on many of the top titles in comics such as Lois Lane, Codename: Knockout, Terra and Birds of Prey for DC, X-Men Unlimited for Marvel, co-created Gatecrasher for BlackBull Comics, and The Pro, a creator-owned book for Image with Jimmy Palmiotti and Garth Ennis. Amanda’s work can also be seen outside the comic book world in such places as ABC’s Nightline, The New York Times, and Mad Magazine. Amanda’s current work can be seen in Powergirl monthly for DC Comics as well as the Supergirl series for Wednesday Comics.
Katie Cook: Katie Cook is a popular artist among Star Wars fans. Her work can be seen in many Topps Star Wars Trading Card sets, Star Wars how-to-draw tutorials, and webcomics for The Clone Wars on starwars.com. She’s also done licensed work for The Lord of the Rings, DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Heroes, and — soon — Fraggle Rock! A fan favorite and a huge nerd, her work can be found at www.katiecandraw.com.
Colleen Doran: Colleen Doran is an illustrator with hundreds of credits for clients including Lucasfilm, The Walt Disney Company, Marvel Comics, Image Comics, DC Comics, Reader’s Digest, Scholastic, and many more. She was artist in residence at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC where she lectured on Hokusai and ukiyo-e prints and their relation to pop culture and manga. She has also lectured on graphic novels in arenas as diverse as the Singapore Writers Festival and the American Library Association. Further, she has illustrated the work of Neil Gaiman, Anne Rice, and Clive Barker. Currently, she is working on two original graphic novels for Vertigo, one by Warren Ellis called Stealth Tribes, and another by the Eisner-nominee Derek McCulloch entitled Gone to Amerikay. She is also artist for an upcoming original graphic novel for publisher Houghton Mifflin with best-selling novelist Barry Lyga. Other credits include Wonder Woman, Amazing Spider-Man, X-Factor, Captain America, Teen Titans, and officially licensed illustrations for Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and The Lord of the Rings. Her graphic novel series A Distant Soil, published by Image Comics, was listed among the 101 best graphic novels of all time and has tens of thousands of readers online.
Lora Innes: Lora Innes’s first solo work, The Dreamer, was published by IDW Publishing as a six issue mini-series, then collected as a graphic novel. The Dreamer began as a webcomic in 2007 and quickly gathered a large, cult-like following online. This year, The Dreamer collected two Harvey Award nominations: Best New Series and Best New Talent for Innes herself. The Dreamer is currently a finalist in the 2009 Cybils in the Graphic Novel for Young Adults category. Lora has also done work for Vertigo’s American Splendor. Allison Sohn: Allison Sohn is an illustrator working primarily in the trading card industry.
