PA – Black Creative Team Signing + Q&A

Kwanza​ ​Osajyefo, Tim Smith 3, Jamal​ ​Igle, and Khary Randolph appear at Amalgam Comics on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 1:00 PM to present and sign the series BLACK.

Kwanza​ ​Osajyefo: Co-creator and the writer of BLACK – a comic that explores the question: what if only black people had superpowers? Kwanza’s career in sequential-art storytelling spans over a decade, including working as online editor at both Marvel and DC Comics. He began his career as an intern at Marvel Comics and worked his way up to digital editor. After leaving comics for a time, Kwanza returned to launch DC Comics’ first webcomics imprint, Zuda, and created the blueprints for the digital comics initiative. Kwanza prefers to write stories that draw from our human condition, centered around characters with various perspectives and backgrounds.

TIM SMITH 3 (A.K.A TS3): Designer and co-creator on Black. Tim has been working in the comic industry for over 15 years. Doing illustration work for Marvel, DC Comics, Archie, and many others to name a few.

Jamal​ ​Igle: Recipient of the 2011 Inkpot Award for Outstanding Achievement in Comic Art, Jamal Igle is the writer/artist/Creator of Molly Danger for Action Lab Entertainment. He’s penciled everything from indie faves to Marvel and DC hits.

Khary Randolph: He attended School of Visual Arts and graduated in 2000 with a BFA in Cartooning and Illustration. Since then, Khary has worked in the animation, advertising, and the comic book industry on properties such as Mosaic, Spider-Man, X-Men, Hellboy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Boondocks, Teen Titans, and Robin War. He is currently working on an unannounced project for Skybound.

Chris McDonnell appears at Amalgam Comics on Saturday, September 23rd at 1:00 PM to discuss and sign his new book, Steven Universe: Art & Origins!

He creates animation for television programs that have included Lady Dynamite (Netflix), Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! (Adult Swim), Portlandia (IFC), Comedy Bang! Bang! (IFC), and Yo Gabba Gabba! (Nickelodeon). McDonnell is also the author and designer of Adventure Time: The Art of Ooo. He lives in Philadelphia.

PA – Black Heroes in Comics Discussion

Join Amalgam Comics on Saturday, June 3rd at 2:00 PM to welcome William Jones to discuss his book, The Ex-Con, Voodoo Priest, Goddess, and the African King.

In this book, Jones breaks down the origins of four black comic book characters – Luke Cage, Papa Midnite, Storm, and Black Panther – and analyzes their representation throughout comic book history.

Whether you’re a long-time lover of comics, an established or aspiring creator or a new and casual fan you’ll find something new as you read about the untold stories of these heroes and get a feel for the future of diversity and representation in the comic book medium.

William Jones is the founder of Afrofuturism Network, is a historian, “comic book geek”, writer, and educator. He is a sought-after public speaker on the subjects of the history of black people in America, the image of black people in various forms of media, pop culture and hip-hop music, to name just a few. He has spoken on various college campuses and at conferences both nationally and abroad.

Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez is the writer and creator of the critically acclaimed and best-selling graphic novel La Borinqueña which he self-published under his own studio, Somos Arte. Edgardo’s debut as a writer for Marvel has been received with critical acclaim similar to his initial work with Marvel as curator of two exhibitions Santerians: The Art of Joe Quesada and Marvelous Color. Via Somos Arte, he has a client roster that includes Marvel, Atlantic Records, Columbia University, and various Latino nonprofits like ASPIRA of New York, El Puente and the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute. Edgardo was the Artistic Director of Pa’lante Siempre Pa’lante, part of the acclaimed PBS POV Documentary Series which received the Silver Apple Award from the National Media Alliance. He is also co-founder of the graphic novel publishing company Darryl Makes Comics with his business partner, Darryl DMC McDaniels.
