Brian Michael Bendis (CIA Class of 1991) is an award-winning comics creator, New York Times bestseller and one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. He’ll share his wit and wisdom – and maybe even a little career advice – with aspiring graphic novelists and comics lovers in this visiting artist lecture, which is free and open to the public.
Bendis is most recently the writer of All New X-Men and Uncanny X-Men, bringing about a new Renaissance for the X-Men franchise. He also launched a brand-new Guardians Of The Galaxy series as Marvel Comics gears up for the Disney motion picture of the same name. All three books debuted at number one on national sales charts.
Bendis completed nine years at the helm of Marvel’s popular Avengers franchise by writing every issue of the New Avengers, plus debuting the hit books Avengers, Mighty Avengers and Dark Avengers, along with the wildly successful ‘event’ projects Avengers vs X-Men, House of M, Secret War, Secret Invasion, Age of Ultron, and Siege.
Cinematheque presents Checefsky
Make an evening of it: stick around after Bendis’s talk for The Cinematheque’s presentation of The Films of Bruce Checefsky, starting at 6:45pm. Learn about the other side of CIA’s mild-mannered gallery director who, for the past 13 years has moonlighted as a maker of short, independent films that have shown widely around the world. Brian Michael Bendis is an American comic book writer and former artist. He has won critical acclaim, including five Eisner Awards for both his creator-owned work and his work on various Marvel Comics books.
Starting out with crime and noir comics, Bendis eventually moved to mainstream superhero work. With Bill Jemas and Mark Millar, Bendis was the primary architect of the Ultimate Marvel Universe, launching Ultimate Spider-Man in 2000, on which he continues as writer to the present day. He relaunched the Avengers franchise with New Avengers in 2004, and has also written the Marvel “event” storylines “House of M”, “Secret War”, 2008′s “Secret Invasion” and 2010′s “Siege”.
Though Bendis has cited comic book writers such as Frank Miller and Alan Moore, his own writing influences are less rooted in comics, drawing on the work of David Mamet, Richard Price, and Aaron Sorkin, whose dialogue Bendis feels are “the best in any medium.”
In addition to writing comics, he has also worked in television, video games and film, and taught writing at Portland State University. He will begin teaching at University of Oregon starting in Fall 2013, and his book Words for Pictures will be out in Spring 2014 from Random House.
