MoCCA Arts Festival Announces the 2018 Awards of Excellence Jury

The Society of Illustrators is proud to announce that Felipe Galindo, Ananth Hirsh, Anne Ishii, Kate Lacour, and Alitha Martinez will form the jury for the 2018 MoCCA Arts Festival Awards of Excellence. These awards will recognize the most outstanding work on view at the festival. Categories include Short Form and Long Form books, Single Image cartoons and comics, and Special Format works. The 2018 Awards of Excellence is Chaired by Jason Little, and Co-Chaired by Maëlle Doliveux.

The competition is open to artists tabling at the 2018 MoCCA Arts Festival. Judging of the Awards of Excellence will happen on Saturday, April 7th. Judges will convene and discuss each of their favorites based on submissions they will have received in February, ultimately deciding on a gold medal and two silver medals per category. Artists winning this award will be acknowledged with a special medal and financial award, The M. Prize, given in memory of Timothy Patrick Moynihan. This award has been made possible through the generosity of friends and family of Timothy Patrick Moynihan.

About the Judges:

Felipe Galindo
Galindo (aka Feggo) creates humorous art in a variety of media, including cartoons, illustrations, animations, fine art and public art. Galindo has received awards for his cartoons in Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Greece, Mexico and the United Nations. He designed four public artworks fabricated in glass at the 231 St. subway station for the Metropolitan Transit Authority. His the creator of the celebrated project Manhatitlan (Pinto Books, 2010), a story about the intertwining of Mexican and American cultures in New York, and he is the author of the cartoon collection No Man Is a Desert Island (Pinto Books, 2012). His client list includes The New Yorker, Nickelodeon,The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Mad, Manhattan Times, among others.

Ananth Hirsh
Writer Hirsh is best known for his collaboration with illustrator Yuko Ota on the webcomic Johnny Wander, a sometimes autobiographical series detailing the lives of the creators and friends. Johnny Wander Vol. 1: Don’t Burn the House Down was published in 2010, with follow-up titles Johnny Wander Vol. 2: Escape to New York and Johnny Wander Vol. 3: Ballad of Laundry Cat published shortly thereafter. A collection of the webcomics titled Our Cats Are More Famous Than Us was released by Oni Press in April, 2017. The duo’s other titles include Lucky Penny, another Oni Press publication. Hirsh’s client list includes work for BOOM!, Dark Horse, Lerner Publishing, Red5, and more. The duo’s latest project, Barbarous, can be viewed on their website.

Anne Ishii
Ishii is a writer, translator, editor, and founder of Massive Goods (purveyors of gay manga and apparel). She produced the book The Passion of Gengorah Tagame: Master of Gay Erotic Fiction (Picturebox Inc.), as well as Massive: Gay Japanese Manga and the Men Who Make It (Fantagraphics), edited alongside Graham Kolbeins and Chip Kidd. She is also the editor of various web projects. She has worked on over fifty books and writes regularly for major publications including The Comics Journal, Racked, The Japan Times, Publishers Weekly, Village Voice, among others

Kate Lacour
Lacour is a comic artist and art therapist based in New Orleans. Her comics and art focus on anatomy, science and transcendence. Her work Vivisectionary won a MoCCA Arts Festival Award of Excellence in 2016. Vivisectionary and her other work, The Disciple, are published by Study Group, a publisher of mini-comics and periodicals as well as host to a selection of webcomics. Lacour is the co-founder of NOLArts Learning Center, a not-for-profit organization helping to create a space for young people with autism and other special needs within the community through creative projects.

Alitha Martinez
Comic book artist Martinez has created art for industry companies like Marvel, DC, Archie and Papercutz. She created the art for the comic series World of Wakanda, a spin-off from Marvel’s Black Panther. She is also widely known for her work drawing Marvel’s Iron Man, NBC’s Heroes, and DC’s Batgirl. In addition, Martinez has created the art for younger reader and teens for Graphic Universe including Kung Fu Masters, The Quest for Dragon Mountain, and My Boyfriend is a Monster #3:My Boyfriend Bites. In 2007, Martinez established Ariotstorm Productions and began producing her own titles including Yume and Ever, and Foreign.

Marvel Portfolio Reviews & Panels at Baltimore Comic-Con 2017

Are you an aspiring or budding comic book artist looking to get your break with one of the biggest publishers in the industry? Or perhaps you’re just looking for some professional guidance as to how to elevate your work to that next level? A Marvel editor will be conducting portfolio reviews at the Baltimore Comic-Con and here’s what you need to know:

  • Portfolios will be submitted at the Information Booth between the hours of 1:00 pm – 5:30 pm on Friday, September 22nd and 11:00 am – 5:30 pm on Saturday, September 23rd. Review sessions for these submissions will take place the following day (Saturday and Sunday respectively).
  • Portfolios must contain your contact information. This includes your full name, cell phone number, and email address. You will also be asked to fill out a form with your contact information.
  • Portfolio reviews will happen on Saturday from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and on Sunday from 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm. If you will not or cannot be present at this time, do not leave your portfolio.
  • Portfolio review schedule will be available at the Information Booth at 11:00 am on Saturday and Sunday. If your name appears on the list, please ask for the portfolio review room location.
  • Do not leave original work with us. Whatever your portfolio contains, make sure you keep the original work. We cannot be responsible for any lost or misplaced work.
  • Please respect the Marvel editor’s time and opinion.
  • Focus on your sequentials. While cover artwork is important, most new artists are hired to do interiors.
  • Review sessions are limited to artists only.
  • Not all submissions will be chosen for review.

Panelists include women creators and editors of different generations including Raina Telgemeier, creator of Smile and Drama; Diane Noomin, creator of Glitz-2-Go and editor of the Twisted Sisters anthologies; Shelly Bond, Executive Editor of Vertigo comics; Alitha Martinez, a penciller and inker who has worked on Marvel’s Iron Man, X-Men, Black Son, Fantastic Four, and the Black Panther and currently WWE Superstars for Papercutz.
