John Siuntres (of the Word Balloon podcast) appears at Challengers Comics for a celebration of the new book, NO PLAN B: The Art of Michael Avon Oeming.

Michael Avon Oeming never prepared for any way to make a living other than drawing. Now the co-creator of Powers, United States of Murder Inc., Takio, Mice Templar, and more offers an in-depth look into his artistic archives, the creative process, and a career that has touched every corner of the comics industry over the last thirty years, with an interview with John Siuntres of the Word Balloon podcast about long-term creative partnerships and explores the secrets of thriving through the ups and downs of the comics industry.

John will be on hand to sign copies of the book and to talk about Michael’s work, and, pretty much anything else, on Wednesday, August 30th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

IL – How to Draw Anything with Gene Ha

Comic creator Gene Ha (Mae, Justice League of America, Top Ten) appears at Harold Washington Library Center on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 1:00 PM. He will take questions from the audience and demonstrate how to draw anything. He’ll stick around the Children’s Library after his talk to make free drawings.  This program is best suited for children ages 5 to 13.  No registration is required, however space may be limited and spots will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note pre-registration is required for groups of 6 or more.

RETCon Hosts Inaugural Convention This Weekend

The inaugural RetCon will be held this weekend on August 12 and 13, 2017 from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the Bailey Auditorium in Chicago.

RetCon is a new Chicago comic book convention devoted to fantastic comics. While other comic conventions have shifted to focus on pop culture, RetCon brings the comic book back to the forefront. The comic book community is filled with diverse, up-and- coming writers and artists who are not currently featured in the mainstream comic industry. RetCon is committed to representing diverse creators.

This convention is perfect for comic book lovers who are interested in having meaningful conversations about the classics and want to learn more about the diverse voices entering the comic book space. The event will feature insightful panels, live entertainment, and a plethora of talented creators showcasing their latest work.

Cartoonist Meredith Gran and Mike Holmes appear at Challengers Comics from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Friday, July 28th.

Meredith Gran has ended her long-running, award-winning and groundbreaking webcomic Octopus Pie! To celebrate the print debut of the final volume from Image Comics, she’s touring the country this July. She’ll be in Chicago – so come out to meet her, get some books signed, and help say goodbye to this beloved comic strip. You can also tell her how much you liked her Adventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queens series, too.
