MN – Sam Zabel and the Magic Pen Signing

samzabel

Dylan Horrocks appears at Magers & Quinn on Monday, September 28, 2015 at 7:00 PM to present and sign his new graphic novel Sam Zabel and the Magic Pen!

Press Release:

Kicking off his first US book tour in over a decade, cartoonist Dylan Horrocks returns triumphantly to the comics scene with the critical hit, Sam Zabel and His Magic Pen, out now with Fantagraphics Books. Horrocks’s talent for giving multifaceted depth and life to his characters is why Multiversity Comics has called him “one of the most important cartoonists working in comics.”

Acclaimed cartoonist Dylan Horrocks returns with a long-awaited new graphic novel, the first since his perennial classic, 1998’s Hicksville.

Cartoonist Sam Zabel hasn’t drawn a comic in years. Stuck in a nightmare of creative block and despair, Sam spends his days writing superhero stories for a large American comics publisher and staring at a blank piece of paper, unable to draw a single line. Then one day he finds a mysterious old comic book set on Mars and is suddenly thrown headlong into a wild, fantastic journey through centuries of comics, stories, and imaginary worlds. Accompanied by a young webcomic creator named Alice and an enigmatic schoolgirl with rocket boots and a bag full of comics, Sam goes in search of the Magic Pen, encountering sex-crazed aliens, medieval monks, pirates, pixies and — of course — cartoonists. Funny, erotic, and thoughtful, Sam Zabel and the Magic Pen explores the pleasures, dangers, and moral consequences of fantasy.

Dylan Horrocks lives in New Zealand with his wife and two sons. He is the author of the award-winning graphic novel Hicksville and the comic book series Pickle and Atlas, and has also written for DC Comics and Vertigo, including Hunter: the Age of Magic and Batgirl.

MN – Bill Willingham Signs

gravity

Press Release:

Boom Island Brewing Company is proud to announce a unique fundraising event aimed at comic book and craft beer aficionados on Friday, May 1, 2015. Renowned comic writer/artist Bill Willingham (Fables, Fairest, Jack of Fables) will autograph the personally designed label of Boom Island Brewing Company’s Belgian strong “Gravity No. 9.” A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Hero Initiative, a non-profit organization created to support comic artists and writers in need of emergency medical aid or financial support.

Willingham, a Rochester, MN resident known for his Fables and Elementals series, the book Down the Mysterly River, along with dozens of other notable titles dating back to the 1980’s, created the Gravity No. 9 label specifically to support the Hero Initiative. Limited supplies of bottles, posters and glassware will be made available at Boom Island on May 1, and at Wizard World Comic Con Minneapolis May 1-3.

Gravity No. 9 – 9.2 ABV – Tequila Barrel Aged Belgian Dark Strong Fermented with Plums.
Appearance – Deep, Dark Brown.
Aroma – Subtle Fruit
Flavor – Light and Dry with Subtle Sweet Notes and Lightly Sour Finish.

Bill Willingham will be in the taproom to autograph bottles and posters on Friday, May 1 from 6pm-8pm.

Boom Island Brewing Company is located on 2014 Washington Avenue North, Minneapolis MN 55422 in north Minneapolis. Find the alley entrance to the taproom in the back of the building. As far as beer labels go, the Willingham-designed Gravity No. 9 label is about as cool as it gets. Other comic creators will be in attendance to meet and greet the public as well. Supply is limited to less than 300 bottles and surely will become a collector’s item. Gravity No. 9 will also be available on tap for this event while supplies last.

About The Hero Initiative
The Hero Initiative is the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book artists and craftsmen in need. Hero Initiative creates a financial safety net for yesterday’s creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. It’s a chance for all of us to give back something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment.

Since its inception, The Hero Initiative has had the good fortune to grant over $750,000 to the comics veterans who have paved the way for those in the industry today.
