Press Release:

Minnesota’s multi-talented young artist Lexee Harris to host a comic book signing event Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Source Comic & Games store in Roseville, Minnesota between 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. “Samarakan” is a three comic book series written and illustrated by Harris. The comic book signing is to promote the finale of the series, reprinted by demand by Source Comic & Games bookstore.

This is the fourth comic book signing for the young artist, who is also an Indie/Pop singer, songwriter (two original songs on movie soundtracks), model (Sketchers) and actress. Each comic book signing resulted in sold-out books. Harris is currently working on a children’s book titled “Let Them Dance.”

Lexee Crystal, as she is known on stage, had four of her original songs for her debut album added to the playlist of Minnesota’s HOTT Radio. Her singles include ”I’m Feeling Lucky,” which appeared on the sound track of a new 2014 romantic comedy “Lucky Dog; “I See,” “Gypsy Caravan” (co-written by Baltimore native singer/songwriter Neenah Taylor), and “Breathless,” which was placed on the soundtrack of the ION Channel original movie presentation “A Star for Christmas.”  All the songs are produced and co-written by Brandon Jarrett (MoHo Productions).

“Gypsy Caravan,” “Breathless” and “I See” reached #5 on Reverb Nation’s Alternative Chart. As a singer Lexee has performed for the Minnesota “Up and Rising Back to School Bash,” and at the Minnesota Urban League Family Day.

As an actress Lexee has starred in a recruitment commercial for North Dakota State College, the dramatic film The Family Guardians, produced and director by Lee H. Jordan, and in the Minnesota stage production of “Alice in Wonderland.”

Lexee’s is also a model who has appeared in a national Skechers print campaign and Mini Mogul Music’s full-page print advertisement spread – which appeared in Pop Star Magazine.

Lexee’s comic book illustrations are expertly done, bind by a colorful hard-back cover, published under the Crystal Publishing Group imprint. The “Samarakan” book-series are also available in several outlets throughout the Minnesota area, such as The Source Comic and Games store in Roseville, MN.

FallCon, one of the premiere comic book events in the midwest with a growing national reputation, is a celebration of the extraordinary marriage between the written word and graphic arts. A fascinating and focused acclaimation of an American born, truly unique, dynamic, ever growing and evolving medium that comic books represent. “FallCon is a 420 minute nexus of all of the things that make the world of comic books so very compelling and relevant!” said Nick Postiglione, Co-Director of the all volunteer MCBA, “Over the years, FallCon has been built around the concept of developing community and providing opportu nity for all aspects of our growing community to interface in a welcoming and energetic enviroment. The midwest has a long standing reputation of being a breeder reactor for comic creators of all types and given the recent appropriation of cutting edge comic book culture by the much larger mainstream media, it’s a great spotlight for the wildly diverse aspects of our exponentially growing creative community. Including superstar creators, working professionals, up and comers, Independent & Alternative creators, webcomicers, self-publishers, mini-comic folks, small press, and all creative and format points in between!”Of course no FallCon could possibly be complete without the hucksters! Offering a super gigantic comic book marketplace with comic book stores and dealers buying, selling and trading all things comic books. There will be literally tons of comic books (Around 500,000 golden age, silver age, bronze age, current and collectible comic books), trade paperbacks, graphic novels , original comic book art, manga, action figures, statues, Star Wars & Trek, unexplicable trinkets, collectibles and the list goes on into a reasonable approximation of infinity. This convention will take place:
  • over multiple days.
Start Date (Format mm/dd/yyyy)

End Date (Format mm/dd/yyyy)
05/17/2015
About This Convention
The all volunteer, not-for-for profit Midwest Comic Book Association is pleased and proud to announce that for the 27th consecutive year a celebration of comical proportions will take place here in the Twin Cities. The Midwest Comic Book Association (MCBA) MSP Comicon (The event formally known as SpringCon – We’ve renamed our first born!) is scheduled for May 16 & 17, 2015, 10AM to 5PM both days. SpringCon will take place at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, in the Grandstand, at 1265 Snelling Avenue, Saint Paul, Minnesota 55108

The MSP Comicon, is one of the Midwest’s largest celebrations of comic book culture, it is a unique regional nexus of graphic literature and the wildly diverse communities that fuel it, produce it, and and ultimately consume it. Given the fact that the Midwest has a long standing and somewhat inexplicable reputation of producing a disproportionate number of working comic book & graphic literature professionals, including comic book writers, artists, inkers, etc., as well as being a breeder reactor for new and independent talent, it’s no wonder that FallCon has become one of the leading comic book conventions nationwide amongst the creative community, dealers and especially amongst the fans.

“The MSP Comicon, a traditional comic book convention with a 21st century bleeding edge, continues to benefit as a result of the regions ever growing home grown comic book creative community, a numerically exploding fan & readership base and ultimately the recent adoption of bleeding edge comic book culture by the much larger mainstream media” Said Nick Postiglione, Co-Director of the MCBA “Thematically, the MSP Comicon presents a relaxed, welcoming, interactive atmosphere where all aspects of the diverse worlds of graphic literature congregate, network, debate & discuss and acquire all things related exclusively to comic books and the many sub-cultures these worlds constantly generate, spawn and re-invent.”

An ideal event for seasoned comic book conventioneers, as well as first timers, MSP Comicon is all about celebrating our community, the fun and experience and provides attendees with the opportunity to personally interface with hundreds of comic book artists, inkers & writers. This includes national industry super stars, working professionals, up and comers, independent & alternative voices, beginners, has beens, never will be’s and all creative points in between.

Other goings on include extensive guest creator panels, free portfolio reviews, how to art classes, extensive art show, Arkham Asylum children’s activities, cosplay & costume contest, the super cool MCBA charity garage sale, the prop shop, tons of fan groups, HeroClixs Tounaments, Burl’s traveling RPG, free grab bags, over 1,000 door prizes and much more TBA!

Of course no comic book convention could be complete without hucksters! The MSP Comicon also features a super gynormous comic book marketplace with comic book stores and dealers buying, selling and trading all things comic books. There will be literally tons of comic books (Around 500,000 golden age, silver age, bronze age, current and collectible comic books), trade paperbacks, graphic novels, original comic book art, manga, action figures, statues, Star Wars & Trek, Doctor Who, Godzilla, inexplicable trinkets, collectibles and the list goes on to a reasonable approximation of infinity.

Described by one long time attendee as a “graphic literature blender and bake shop” the MCBA Comicon is the place where graphic arts and the written words are equally recognized and a venue where new and exciting creative alliances will be formed, collectors dreams will be recognized or dashed, new friendships will be forged in the pursuit of common interests, local charities will be benefited, cos playing costume characters will be masters of all they survey, creative types will be inspired and all will be as it should. 840 minutes of pure comic book action! Something for everyone and everyone welcome!

Minneapolis Wizard World Con Report!

My feet were hurting. Throbbing, in fact. With blisters on each ball and heel, even short walks delivered a four square of pain. Ever had a pebble trapped in your shoe? How about a shuriken? Watching me walk, people must have thought, “The poor man. Must have forgotten his crutches. How can he get around on two broken legs?”

I was in this predicament thanks to walking twenty-seven miles in one weekend, mostly around the latest Wizard World Comic Con, which was held May 2-4 in Minneapolis. It was that city’s first-ever Wizard World con, and everything from guests to vendors to venue—the 87-room, 475,000-square-foot downtown convention center—was spectacular.

Headlining the event were Matt Smith and Karen Gillan from Doctor Who. Gillan, a former model, played traveling companion to Smith’s Doctor in series 5-7. I saw her on Saturday, smiling and chatting, her hair in a bun, amid a sea of fans. Smith showed up the next day, and the two had a joint photo op—the third time in North America that this had happened (the first two were the Louisville Comic Con and the St. Louis Comic Con). Other stars were William Shatner, Robert Englund, Ernie Hudson, Ralph Macchio, Neal Adams, Mike Grell, and Lou Ferrigno (my interview with Ferrigno will appear on ConventionScene in a few days). Other events included celebrity one-on-ones, panel discussions, a film festival, RPG tournaments, speed dating, at least 75 exhibitors, and a cosplay contest.

I caught most of Ralph Macchio’s one-on-one session on Saturday afternoon. Now 52 years old, Macchio delights in the Karate Kid franchise, though it used to bother him. In the early 90s, he said, he struggled to find acting work, and there were days he stayed hidden at home because he couldn’t face another “wax on, wax off” encounter. But film quotes were not all that fans said to him. Some told him how the movie had helped them deal with bullying, or it had changed their lives in other ways. When he thought about those people, he realized he would be “foolish” to reject his legacy. Ralph Macchio is a funny, humble guy who likes the Karate Kid re-make (though he doesn’t see it as “iconic”) and who is hoping his future includes more voice acting (he has done several episodes of Robot Chicken). And do his two kids understand their dad’s place in cinematic history? Macchio told the story of his son Daniel (hmm . . . coincidence?) coming across a trove of magazines and other memorabilia from the 80s. The boy raced into his sister’s bedroom and said, “Julia! Dad was huge and we missed it!”

Minneapolis was cold this May—unseasonably so, according to one native, which is just my luck—but the city was grand, the people welcoming, and the comic con a smash hit. If you weren’t there, browse the photos below to see what you missed. Next I am off to ConCarolinas (May 30-June 1) in the Queen City, Charlotte. Maybe I’ll see you!
