Press Release:

The one and only Scott Snyder, the uber-talented superstar writer behind Batman: Court of Owls, Batman the Black Mirror, American Vampire, and most recently, the red-hot new IMAGE series WYTCHES, will be making a very special visit to Third Eye!

We are beyond stoked to be hosting Scott at the shop, and we know when many of you guys heard our first announcement of this, you echoed the same excitement in a major way!

And, you guys know why this signing is happening? It’s because of YOU and your enthusiasm for these awesome events we have. Third Eye has a reputation far and wide for providing some of the most fun in-store events in the country, and we could not do it without you guys and the genuine love of the medium each and everyone of you brings with you.

So, we’re going to be pulling out all the stops to make this one extra-special, as we celebrate the SEASON OF THE WYTCH at Third Eye with Scott Snyder.

WHAT’S WYTCHES ABOUT?
This incredible new IMAGE COMICS series is one of the coolest things we’ve seen to come down the pike in quite sometime. Not since the release of SAGA #1 have we had this kind of anticipation and excitement for a new ongoing series, and folks, while we’re only one issue in at this point, I have to tell you: that one issue totally delivered on all the high hopes we had for it!

In WYTCHES, we’re shown how across hte globe, century after century, men and women were burned, drowned, hanged, tortured, imprisoned, persecuted, and murdered for the crime of witchcraft.

Guess what? None of them were witches. In fact, they died protecting a terrible and hidden truth: witches, real witches, DO exist.

They are ancient, elusive, and deadly creatures that are rarely seen and even more rarely survived.

And, in Snyder & Jock’s WYTCHES, we’re taking a very dark trip into their world.

We can practically hear Dario Argento’s Suspiria theme playing in the background as we type this, Third Eye Faithful, that’s how darn creepy and awesome WYTCHES is.

Winter is the Season of the Wytch!

We’re so excited about WYTCHES that we did not just one, but two awesome Third Eye variants, one for issue #2, and one for issue #3!

These are both by the incredibly talented DECLAN SHALVEY, and the two covers when placed side by side make one, awesome large connecting image.

These are being printed in very limited quantities, and are exclusively available via Third Eye Comics.

Issue #2 (pictured right), will go on sale on Wednesday 11/12/14, and issue #3 will be on sale 12/3/14.

Make sure you snag one of each, so you can get them signed by Scott on Saturday 1/17/15!

OTHER PROJECTS BY SCOTT SNYDER
We’re super big fans of Snyder’s other projects, and past works as well as his new series WYTCHES, so we wanted to take a moment to spotlight some of the other great stuff he’s done that you can get signed on 1/17/15!

First off, in the series AMERICAN VAMPIRE, Scott Snyder totally reimagined the mythology of vampires in a way that was so fresh, and so exciting, that it still has us hooked to this day with the most recent incarnation: AMERICAN VAMPIRE: SECOND CYCLE.

In AMERICAN VAMPIRE, we begin by following Pearl, a young woman living in 1920s Los Angeles, who is brutally turned into a vampire and sets out on a path of righteous revenge against the European monsters who tortured and abused her.

Meanwhile, the background to American Vampire is laid in the Old West, as the origin of Skinner Sweet, the original American vampire, shows us a stronger, faster creature than any vampire ever seen before.

Imagine Sergio Leone’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA by way of FROM DUSK TIL DAWN or NEAR DARK, as Snyder follows his cast through the various generations and decades, and delivers one of the best takes on horror comics we’ve seen in quite some time.

We’ve got all the graphic novels of AMERICAN VAMPIRE in stock, as well as all of the issues of the new series, SECOND CYCLE, to get you on board.

And, of course, many of you may already know Scott Snyder from his incredible work on BATMAN, but just in case you don’t, we’ve got to take a second to spotlight his work on BATMAN: COURT OF OWLS, BATMAN: CITY OF OWLS, BATMAN: DEATH OF THE FAMILY, and most recently BATMAN: ZERO YEAR.

As the man who brought BATMAN back to prominence with the launch of the NEW 52 Batman run, starting with COURT OF OWLS, then continuing into the later stories, Snyder has redefined BATMAN more than any other creator in recent memory.

Along with GREG CAPULLO, he has done an incredible job of giving us exactly what we want out of Gotham City, and then some.

Folks, if you’ve never read BATMAN, or if it’s been a long time since you’ve read BATMAN, we highly recommend picking up BATMAN: COURT OF OWLS, and finding out why Snyder’s run is spoken of so highly.

And, don’t forget, BATMAN: THE BLACK MIRROR, which features Snyder’s WYTCHES collaborator, JOCK, and delivers one of the most interesting Batman stories we’ve ever read.

In BATMAN, the BLACK MIRROR, Snyder & Jock, showcase the dark origins of Jim Gordon’s long-lost son… James Gordon Jr. And, it’s a truly harrowing read, from start to finish. By far, one of the darkest, and most compelling BATMAN stories we’ve read since ARKHAM ASYLUM, Batman: the BLACK MIRROR is an incredible read, and a must-have to get signed by Scott on Saturday 1/17/15.

Finally, a must-read for you WYTCHES fans, as it really captures the same kind of sheer creepiness, and dread that WYTCHES does, is SEVERED. In this IMAGE COMICS sleeper hit, we’re introduced to 12-year old Jack Garron, who’s ran away from home to find his biological father, a wayward musician.

Along the way he meets up with a traveling salesman whose winning smile is fake, beneath which hide his real teeth — jagged spikes that he uses to eat his prey.

This was an incredible read, and if you dig the cerebral, eerie horror of WYTCHES, then you’ll love SEVERED. Make sure you scoop a copy to get signed by Scott on 1/17!

Cosplay & Be Entered to Win a WYTCHES #1
Phantom Black & White Sketch Variant

Scott Snyder has written some great stories with some fantastic characters for Cosplay material; be it the mysterious Wytches you could put your own interpretation on, a member of the Court of Owls, ol’ Skinner Sweet, or the Clown Prince of Crime.

So, we figured: hey, we’re Third Eye, we have a TON of uber-talented Cosplayers who are a part of the Third Eye fam, and shop at our stores — why not make this even more fun?

So, here it is, Third Eye Faithful: you come in Cosplay as any character from ANY project Snyder has worked on (from Batman to Wytches to American Vampire and beyond) — and you’ll be entered to win a WYTCHES #1 Phantom Black & White Sketch variant before the doors open for the signing!

BE ONE OF THE FIRST 50 IN LINE & RECEIVE A FREE GIFT!

You guys know us by now, right? You know we love it when you make these events into a real experience, and with how big of a signing this is — we know you guys are going to be down to make it a true Third Eye extravaganza.

It’s seeing you guys building a community while having fun, and waiting in line for these events that really motivates us to keep making stuff like this happen. We love it, and as such, we’ve decided to put together a very cool surprise gift for the first 50 of you who are lined up for the big signing!

Diamond Announces Baltimore Comic Con as Site for 2015 Retailer Summit

RS 2014Press Release:

Diamond Comic Distributors has announced that its 2015 Retailer Summit for comic book specialty retailers will take place September 23-25, 2015 in Baltimore, MD.

“We’re excited to bring the Summit back to Diamond’s home turf of Charm City,” said Roger Fletcher, Diamond’s VP-Sales & Marketing. “We had a great event in Las Vegas last year and we hope to exceed that in terms of growth and retailer satisfaction with the 2015 Summit.”

Diamond also announced that it will partner with Baltimore Comic-Con, which will be held right after the Summit from September 25-27, to share marketing and strategic initiatives for the combined events. Baltimore Comic-Con’s Exhibit Hall will serve as the Summit’s Exhibit Hall during special “Retailer Only” hours.

balt2015“Our 15th annual show in 2014 was our biggest show to date,” said Marc Nathan, promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “It’s only going to get bigger and better. Baltimore Comic-Con, coupled with Diamond’s Retailer Summit, should make for one of the best regional comic-con shows ever held.”

Now in its 13th year, Diamond’s Retailer Summit is the leading annual event for comic book specialty retailers to meet with publishers and vendors, and come together with fellow retailers to discuss the industry and their businesses. Top publishers such as Dark Horse Comics, DC Entertainment, IDW Publishing, Image Comics, and Marvel Comics come and share exciting new projects, while retailers get to network and learn about new business practices to help them succeed and thrive in today’s retailing environment.

Additional details and registration for the industry’s annual retailer event will be announced in early 2015. Publishers and vendors who would like to sponsor or exhibit at the Baltimore Comic-Con should contact Chris McClelland (registrar@baltimorecomiccon.com) now for additional information.

The latest developments regarding the show can always be found on our websiteTwitter, and Facebook pages.

Baltimore Comic-Con Report!

Who watches the Watchmen? A few hundred people at least, all of whom were in line ahead of me at last month’s Baltimore Comic-Con (Sept. 5-7) for Dave Gibbons’s autograph.

Gibbons is, of course, the artist behind Watchmen, the 12-issue miniseries published by DC in the mid-80s. The accolades heaped on Watchmen are as legendary as the series itself. It was the only graphic novel to appear on Time‘s 2005 “100 Greatest Novels” list, and it appeared again in 2009 on the magazine’s “Top 10 Graphic Novels” list. In 2008, Entertainment Weekly ranked Watchmen thirteenth on its list of the best 50 novels printed in the last 25 years, calling it “the greatest superhero story ever told and proof that comics are capable of smart, emotionally resonant narratives.”

I have loved Watchmen since it came out, and when I saw that Gibbons, who lives in the UK, would be in Baltimore, I booked my flight immediately. By “flight,” I mean I got up at 5:00am and drove the six hours from Raleigh, NC, passing through Washington just miles from the White House and getting stuck in horrendous construction-related traffic that even President Obama is, apparently, powerless to prevent. Other great artists and writers were there, including Steve Leialoha, Walter and Louise Simonson, Greg Capullo, David Finch, and Al Milgrom, who does few conventions these days. Denny O’Neil left early due to a family emergency, and the wait for George Perez was four hours (!), according to one woman who endured it.

But Gibbons was, for me, the star of the show. I waited about an hour in his line, and when I got to the table, I found him to be gracious, funny, and down-to-earth. He was impressed by my Graphitti edition Watchmen hardcover (the first graphic novel version of the series) and my Marvel Comics Doctor Who #1 (for the wife, a consecrated Whovian). But he oohed and ahhed—actually, we all did—over something another guy had: the 1994 computer game Beneath a Steel Sky, still in the box. Gibbons did the background art for this game, and he said he had never signed a copy before. Get it on eBay, young man!

The Baltimore Comic-Con has long been a two-day affair. This was its first year spanning a third day, and everyone I talked to thought it a success. Vendors especially were pumped-up because their rate stayed roughly the same despite the extra day. They also praised the convention staff for being responsive and professional. Sales were good, too: one dealer sold an Action Comics #252 (first appearance of Supergirl) for $900.

Dr. Chilton, the captor/tormentor of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, says that Baltimore “can be quite a fun town, if you have the right guide.” The only guide I needed was the folks at this year’s Comic-Con. As you are planning your convention schedule for next year, mark down September 25-27 in Baltimore. It won’t be a baaa-d decision.
