Third Eye Comics of Annapolis, MD, Cards, Comics & Collectibles of Reisterstown, MD, Laughing Ogre Comics of Lansdowne, VA, and Comics & Gaming of Gainesville, VA, have all come together to support a charity convention being held this Saturday in La Plata, MD.
The ANS Sci-Fi & Comic Con, which will be held on May 11, 2013, was founded in 2012 to benefit the Archbishop Neale School (ANS) in La Plata. The mission of the show is to create a fun and memorable event for fans and collectors of all ages that supports the educational and spiritual goals of ANS.
In its second year, the show will be expanding to feature more than 80 tables with more than 30 different vendors, as well as 13 artists from as far away as New York City, including Frank Cho, the creator, artist and writer of Liberty Meadows and the artist and writer of Marvel Comics’ new Savage Wolverine comic, who is being sponsored by Cards, Comics & Collectibles. In addition, Jerry & Penelope Gaylord and Brian Turner, artists on Boom! Studios’ Fanboys vs. Zombies, NFL Rush Zone, and Adventure Time, will be appearing courtesy of Third Eye Comics.
“We love seeing new conventions pop up, and the ANS Sci-Fi & Comic-Con in La Plata, MD is one of the most promising new shows we’re doing in 2013,” said Steve Anderson, owner of Third Eye Comics. “With superstar Frank Cho, and a retailer’s room of the best vendors the area has to offer, we know this is going to be the first of many awesome shows we do with ANS.”
“I knew of this show last year but was unable to go,” said Marc Nathan, owner of Cards, Comics & Collectibles and show promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. “Lots of my closest dealer friends had great things to say about the show and the cause. This year, we are coming full force with lots of product and we are all really excited.”
In addition to the vendors and artists, the show will also feature screenings of some rare and unusual films and a sneak-peak of the new documentary Plastic Galaxy – The Story of Star Wars Toys, with a special Q&A session with director Brian Stillman, as well as a game demo of the Conquest Tactics CCG by developer Andy Niggles. Additional programming includes: panels and presentations, silent auctions, door prizes, great food, and the 501st Legion!
“I am really looking forward to this event,” said Gary Dills, Owner of Laughing Ogre Comics. “Any time you can put great people together with a great cause, everyone wins. I am happy to be involved with such an endeavor!”
“We’re looking forward to a great show with an even better cause,” said Tim Chillemi of Comics & Gaming.
The Archbishop Neale School is located at 104 Port Tobacco Road, La Plata MD, 20646. Convention hours are from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, and admission is $5 for adults and children over 10 (children 10 and under are free). All proceeds from admissions, vendors fees, and silent auctions directly benefit Archbishop Neale School.

Folks — we’re proud to announce this signing for what is sure to be one of the most popular new IMAGE COMICS titles to release this year. The artwork, the storytelling, the premise.. it’s all top notch; we got the same kind of goosebumps reading the previews of this one that we did when we first thumbed through books like PETER PANZERFAUST, MANHATTAN PROJECTS, REVIVAL and BEDLAM. This fantastic new series from rising stars FRANK J. BARBIERE & CHRIS MOONEYHAM kicks off a bold new era of PULP ADVENTURE COMICS!
After a tragic encounter with an artifact known as the DREAMSTONE, infamous treasure hunter FABIAN GRAY was possessed by five literary ghosts and has been granted access to their unique abilities.
Now, we join creators Frank J. Barbiere and Chris Mooneyham for the most exciting debut of 2013 as they introduce you to a unique world full of action, black magic, exotic locales, and literary allusion!
Folks: this book takes so many of our favorite things, and rolls them into one slick package. There’s the occult intrigue of series like HELLBOY and THE SANDMAN. There’s the pulpy treasure hunter aspect that’s not far removed from the UNCHARTED games. There’s the dynamic of a guy carrying around five ghosts with him; and being able to access their unique abilities.
Five Ghosts: the Haunting of Fabian Gray is a MUST-READ, Third Eye Faithful, and we cannot recommend it enough.
We’ll be having a very special release party signing with both Frank and Chris on Saturday May 25th, which is the week that the third issue of FIVE GHOSTS arrives.
Make sure to snag your copies of issues 1 & 2, when the series begins in March, so you can bring them by to get signed by Frank & Chris this May!

Jai Nitz and Greg Smallwood sign at Third Eye Comics on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm!
FIRST 25 IN LINE RECEIVE A VERY SPECIAL FREE GIFT LIMITED TO THIS EVENT!
One of the most exciting new creator-owned books coming out this Summer is the Dark Horse original series, DREAM THIEF, which looks like it’s going to come out of nowhere, and turn a TON of heads.
This incredible blend of supernatural horror, and modern-day crime drama (ala THE WIRE, RESERVOIR DOGS, THE DEPARTED, etc.) grabbed a hold of us when we read it, and completely blew us away.
Right then and there, we told creators Jai Nitz and Greg Smallwood: you’re coming to Third Eye to launch this gem proper.
What’s it about? After stealing an Aborginal mask from a museum, John Lincoln realizes that the spirits of the vengeful dead are possessing his body and mind while he sleeps! His old problems have been replaced by bloody hands and a trail of dead bodies — and now, remembering where he slept the night before is more important than ever.
This gritty, fast-paced drama is a MUST-READ, Third Eye Faithful, and we’d love to have you join us on Saturday May 18th when we have Jai and Greg to the shop to launch the book!

Bob Fingerman signs at Third Eye Comics on Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm!
First 25 in line receive a FREE limited edition signed & numbered bookplate created JUST FOR THIS EVENT!
Folks, we are extra excited about this one, as Minimum Wage has been one of our personal favorites for a VERY long time. When IMAGE COMICS decided to collect the entire run of MINIMUM WAGE into one gorgeous, oversized 350+ page hardcover for only $34.99 — we knew we had to do something special to celebrate, and bringing series creator BOB FINGERMAN in for a huge Third Eye signing was exactly the thing to do!
For those of you who may not know, MINIMUM WAGE is one of the best indie comics of all time. Heck, when Third Eye Steve sold off his collection to fund the store way back when — his Minimum Wage comics were one of the few things he couldn’t part with! That should tell you something!
During its original run, MINIMUM WAGE racked up critical acclaim and a devoted following. Why? Because each page of Rob and Sylvia’s workaday saga boasted uncomfortable truths drenched in bleak humor, presaging squirmy shows like LOUIE and GIRLS.
Set in a New York so real you can smell it, this definitive edition collects the entire run, and also features a ton of great guest pin-ups by the likes of Peter Bagge, Dave Cooper, Joe Dator, Guy Davis, Glenn Fabry, Dean Haspiel, Gilbert Hernandez, Peter Kuper, Mike Mignola, and many more.
We can pretty much guarantee that if you dig slice-of-life humor, or autobiographical comics, you’ll love this book.
Imagine the dark everyday humor of Kevin Smith’s CLERKS, mix in a little bit of comic industry insider fun, and a whole lot of interesting characters, and you’ve got MINIMUM WAGE.
We’ll have plenty of copies of MINIMUM WAGE on hand for you to check out at the event!

Big Guests, Big Vendors and A Big Film Make the Second ANS Sci-Fi & Comic Con a BIG DEAL!
Preparations are in full swing for the May 11 benefit event showcasing Archbishop Neale School in La Plata.
“Our headlining special guest is the unmistakable Frank Cho,” says event organizer Tom Boone. “This is Frank’s only scheduled convention appearance in the DC area for the rest of the year!” This May, Marvel Comics will be wrapping up a well-received six issue series written and drawn by Mr. Cho called ‘Savage Wolverine’, based on the X-Men hero. More than 20 other comic artists and writers will be attending as well as artists from other disciplines including digital media, sculpting, pyrography and photography.
In addition to artists, more than 20 vendors covering over 80 tables will be selling a wide array of comics, cards, sci-fi, pop culture and entertainment collectibles. “We’re very proud that nearly all of our vendors from our 2012 show have returned and we’ve attracted even more this year,” says Boone. Among them are Cards, Comics and Collectibles, a retail store in Reisterstown and Third Eye Comics, a retailer with stores in Prince Frederick and Annapolis. “We have vendors coming from as far away as Pennsylvania. We’ve cast the net wide to try to get as many unique vendors as possible for our attendees.” Local retailers such as Comics MD and BookNuts Book Shop will also have a presence at the show.
Another first for the event is the screening of films. New York based filmmaker Brian Stillman will be attending the ANS Sci-Fi & Comic Con to present previously unseen clips from his upcoming film, ‘Plastic Galaxy – The Story of Star Wars Toys’. According to Boone, “It’s an incredible documentary that toy collectors and Star Wars fans will love.” Other works include student films from the DAVE School in Orlando, FL, and rare films that have never been commercially released.
Panels and presentations, a staple of comic conventions, will also be a part of this year’s charity event. “How to Make Your Own Comic” will be a panel discussion with artists and creators lead by Chris Rizzo, Creative Director of New York based multimedia group Dark Ink Pictures. The panel will discuss topics such as breaking into comics and writing techniques. “The DIY ethic is strong in comics today. The internet and indie publishing are breaking down barriers and providing young creators with opportunities that were unthinkable as little as ten years ago,” says Boone.
Popular at conventions around the world is the 501st Legion, a Star Wars-inspired costuming group whose local unit, the Old Line Garrison, will be returning to the ANS Sci-Fi & Comic Con in greater numbers this year. The stormtroopers will be entertaining fans of all ages with a charity putt-putt game and plenty of photo opportunities throughout the event. Also returning are the Viking Re-enactors from Southern Maryland’s own Longship Company, with authentic costumes and equipment.
Another highlight of the ANS Sci-Fi & Comic Con is the Silent Auction. “Every penny from admissions, the vendor’s fees and the silent auction goes directly to the operating budget of Archbishop Neale School.” To that end, an impressive array of unique and one-of a-kind collectibles have been gathered for the auction from attending artists including Mike O’Shields and Laura Inglis, to major industry names like John Byrne, Doug Chiang and James Arnold Taylor, and authors Troy Denning and Lemony Snicket.
“All this is just the tip of the iceberg,” says Boone. “We’re screening more films and we’ll have more artists and more presentations. We’re using more space inside the school than ever. We have more food vendors this year, more prizes, more of everything fans go to conventions for. We encourage all of our attendees to make plans to stay for a while!”
The Second Annual ANS Sci-Fi & Comic Con is happening May 11, 2013, from 10am to 3pm at Archbishop Neale School in La Plata, Maryland. Admission is $5 for adults, kids under ten are free. For more information, visit www.anscomiccon.com
