Winner of the 2011 National Jewish Book Award

Pulitzer Prize-winner Art Spiegelman reenters Maus, the unforgettable biography of his father’s life during and after the Holocaust. Spiegelman delves into the book that consumed him for 13 years to discuss his survivor parents, the oxymoron of picturing life in a death camp, racist imagery and his beloved medium of comics. MetaMaus brilliantly deconstructs one of the most important works of art and literature of the 20th century, while providing insight into Spiegelman’s creative process.

Art Spiegelman is an award-winning author and illustrator of more than 10 books, most notably Maus, for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1992. His comics are best known for their shifting graphic styles, formal complexity and often controversial content. His work has been published in numerous periodicals, including The New Yorker, where he was a staff artist and writer from 1993-2003.

“Why the Holocaust? Why mice? Why comics? Spiegelman answers intelligently, articulately, and with a high degree of psychological and aesthetic penetration.” Booklist, starred review

“Richly rewarding…The book also serves as a master class on the making and reading of comics…The last frame encapsulates in one single moment the artfulness behind the tale we’ve just read, and the uneasy combination of filial pride and anger that flowed through Maus and flows through Metamaus as well.” The New York Times Book Review

Mark Long, Jim Demonakos, and Nate Powell sign at Politics and Prose on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 1:00 pm.

In this remarkable confluence of talents, Powell’s graphic artistry joins Long’s true story and Demonakos’s narrative skills to depict an episode of the civil rights struggle. In 1967, five black college students in Texas were accused of killing a white policeman. A white family from a notoriously racist neighborhood not only spoke in their defense, but succeeded in getting the charges against them dropped.

Archie Comics’ Comic Book Fairs in Partnership with Fandom Advisory Network is taking a road trip across America! The Archie Comics Literacy Tour is a celebration of Archie’s storied 70 year history and a mission to promote literacy and learning through comic books. Starting at this years Comic Con in San Diego, Archie will drive across country and stop off at comic book stores, children’s bookstores, museums, and schools to run creative workshops and champion the legacy of Archie Comics through new titles and restorations of their older ones ( Archie: A Celebration of America’s Favorite Teenager). Comic Book Fairs, a division of Archie Comics, built on the mission to advocate comic books in education, will be working with schools and comic books stores to build strong connections within their community to establish Archie Comics as a learning tool for educators. We at Archie feel that comic books can be a great conduit to literacy and academic concepts, especially for reluctant readers.

The Literacy Tour will be a great trip not just for us, but for our fans past, present, and future.

Below are the places and dates you can find us this summer. Would love to see you there!
