STGCC 2010 Sets the Pace for Pop Culture Growth in Region

Singapore, 13 December 2010 – Pop culture is projected to grow in the region, with keen fans helping to boost the industry in Singapore and regionally. This was the view of industry professionals after the Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention (STGCC) 2010 ended its three-day run yesterday. Over 28,000 visitors, with a visitorship of 72,000, flocked to the show and gave the thumbs up to the quality and variety of the anime, manga, comics, toys, live performances and panel and academic discussions.

STGCC teamFor some fans, it was a dream come true that so many of their idols were here in Singapore. Roshadiyanto Bin Ibrahim, 24, had been first in the queue for all three days, turning up everyday at 6am. He is a big Marvel fan and “I never thought that they would come to this part of the world. It’s like a dream come true!”

Followers of Cosplay have also given the thumbs up to the better quality of participation at STGCC.

Clive Lee, an experienced Singaporean cosplayer and a judge at the Cosplay@STGCC competition, said: “This competition, compared to others, has a very interesting variety of costumes making the competition very entertaining as people are looking forward to the variety of costumes they can see from the East and West. These ranged from humanoid costumes such as those of anime characters to the very elaborated mecha costumes like Gundam. Some of the finalists have even participated in world-class competitions.”

The show’s ‘East meets West’ flavour featuring personalities and artists from the US, Europe and Asia was a major draw for fans. Many agreed that the top-line content this year, like the artists, writers and illustrators from Marvel Comics and popular toy designers from Hong Kong and Japan appearing at one event made the experience unique.

There was overwhelming response to the panel sessions by Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm as well as by fan favourite Simone Legno, creator of the popular Tokidoki brand, with all the sessions filled to capacity.

And as a measure of fan adulation, fans of Japanese leading girl idol group AKB48 started queuing as early as 7am on Saturday, 11 Dec for the group’s Meet-The-Fans session at 7pm.

“STGCC is a world-class pop culture event in one of the most amazing places on Earth. I can’t wait to come back!” said Gail Simone, critically-respected comics writer best-known for her work in Wonder Woman, Secret Six and Birds of Prey.

Marvel’s international talent scout C.B. Cebulski said: “I can honestly say that STGCC 2010 surpassed all of mine and Marvel’s expectations! The level of local talent, coupled with the overwhelming fan enthusiasm here, made it one of our best convention experiences ever. And while I hope our presence here left fans thinking, “Make Mine Marvel”, I know I leave thinking, “Stay Sensational, Singapore!”

Mr Cebulski is bringing home 16 portfolios shortlisted from the 53 received to Marvel for review and their creators may have a chance to work with Marvel Comics.

Project Director Yeow Hui Leng of show organiser, Reed Exhibitions, said that the “East meets West” collaboration between Reed Exhibitions Singapore and ReedPOP in the USA brought more international participation and content from the US and Europe to the Asian audience, with some pop culture personalities making their debut in Asia.

She said: “Our decision to co-produce the show with ReedPOP – the team behind events including the New York Comic Convention, New York Anime Festival, and Star Wars Celebration – paid off in terms of the quality and variety of the show.”

Going Forward STGCC 2011

STGCC 2010 opens with a galaxy of pop culture icons

Crème de la crème of personalities, products, entertainment and collectibles from West and East in a three-day, action-packed extravaganza

Singapore, 10 December 2010 – This year’s Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention (STGCC) is power-packed with top-line content from both East and West, bringing together personalities, entertainment and products in a three-day, unique east meets west extravaganza. The show, which is into its third year, will showcase first-time participation from world-class names in pop culture, with something for everyone in comics, anime, manga, toys and games. Top gamers from around the region will participate in the Online SEA Games 2010, a battle-to-the-death series of thrilling gaming tournaments organised by Asiasoft Online.

West Meets East

STGCC 2010 organisers, Reed Exhibitions, has taken “the best of our US show ‘New York Comic Con’ and infused it with an eastern flavour.” STGCC features a strong line-up of panels showcasing 26 guests from 12 countries. Marvel will make its first appearance in Asia and will be reviewing artists’ portfolios. Lucasfilm Singapore will helm two exciting panels on the art of the Clone Wars and divulge secrets on the making of Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 2. In addition, Lucasfilm will be recruiting during the first two days of STGCC at designated times.

The Marvel entourage comprises celebrated writers and famed illustrators known for their work on Marvel’s most beloved super heroes like Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, The Avengers, Fantastic Four, The Incredible Hulk, Daredevil and Thor.

From the East, personalities will include top-notch toy designers, including Gloomy Bear’s Mori Chack, Devilrobots’ Koto Nishiyama and Shinichiro Kitai from Japan, and Asterialand’s Alice Chan, Monkey Playground’s Jason Siu and Da TeamBronx’s Tim Tsui from Hong Kong.

A total of 50 budding artists will showcase their creations at Artist Alley from Southeast Asia. Product launches will include manga Karneval (world’s first English version), Naruto, toys like the special 7” Domo Qee and The Winged Tiger in Singapore, a comics collaboration between the ‘Godfather of the American Graphic Novel’, Phil Yeh and Singaporean artist and co-author, He Shuxin.

Fans can expect a line-up of activities that will immerse them in a total pop culture experience at STGCC. They can get the thrills with action professionals in live stunts, watch artists at work, get tips from writers and illustrators on the finer points of their art, buy gifts and souvenirs based on their favourite characters (yes, it’s Christmas!) or even get talent-spotted!

Live performances!

Adding to the live action buzz is a special performance by Japanese all-girl pop sensation AKB48. 12 of the girls will also be performing their latest song, Chance no Junban, which debuted in Japan on 8 December 2010 and meeting their fans at a special closed-door session. Be thrilled by “live” stunt performances by Team J Phillips, re-enacting iconic scenes from The Matrix and Kung-Fu Panda without wires or rigging and be absorbed in cosplay fashion shows by Merveilleux Boutique and Haru House.

Sneak peeks!

Be among the first to preview screenings including the Scream Awards 2010 (ahead of the Sony Pictures Entertainment network-wide simultaneous broadcast on 19 December 2010) and one of 2010’s most anticipated anime, Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan presented by Animax. There will be two other sneak peeks – Cartoon Network’s Asian premiere of Generator Rex and Iconix Korea’s Pororo, which are popular hits with children.

Collectibles and Limited Editions!

Exclusive collectibles will also be up for grabs at STGCC. Some of the biggest toy designers and comic houses will be launching new-fangled toys and limited-edition memorabilia. Fans will have the incredible chance to have their toys and comics autographed by the creators themselves. Besides comics writers and illustrators from Marvel Comics, and DC Comics’ Ivan Brandon and Gail Simone, V for Vendetta’s David Lloyd, Tokidoki’s Simone Legno, Da TeamBronx’s Tim Tsui and DevilRobots’ Koto Nishiyama and Shinichiro Kitai will be present and signing their works at the Walk of Fame, which is a special section of scheduled meetings for fans to meet and interact with their favourite pop culture authors, illustrators and creators.

Cebulski will also be giving an inside look into the world of Marvel and what it takes to the next comics superstar at his panel, Marvel’s Hunt for Talent.

Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm Singapore will also be presenting panels for the first time in Asia at STGCC. Comics buffs will hear first-hand from Marvel writers and artists their inspirations, latest projects in panels and intimate conversations over the first two days of STGCC.

Lucasfilm Singapore will present two panels – from Industrial Light & Magic Singapore – Iron Man 2: An insider’s treat on the movie’s visual effects and from Lucasfilm Animation – The Clone Wars: Pushing the envelope for TV. This year’s STGCC will have a total of 37 product launches, including comics, limited-edition toys and merchandise, and features over 100 exhibitors and 50 upcoming artists from 12 countries.

The Invincible Iron Man and Uncanny X-Men Writer To Participate in Panels and Signings in Singapore

Singapore, November 19 2010: The Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention (STGCC) today announced that prolific American comic book writer Matt Fraction will be appearing at the 2010 Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention as a Guest of Honor. The STGCC, a pop culture convention, featuring renowned talent and the latest in toys, games and comics from Asia, will take place December 10-12, 2010 at the Suntec International Convention Centre in Singapore. STGCC is co-produced by Reed Exhibitions Singapore and ReedPOP in the USA, the team behind events including the New York Comic Con. Mr. Fraction will join additional luminaries already announced by STGCC including Alex Maleev, C.B. Cebulski, Esad Ribic, Gail Simone, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Harvey Tolibao, Ivan Brandon, Leinil Yu, Salvador Larroca, Simone Legno, and all-girl J-Pop group AKB48.

Matt Fraction, based in Oregon in the USA, is an Eisner Award-winning comic book writer, currently writing Uncanny X-Men, Thor, and Invincible Iron Man (with art from fellow STGCC guest Salvador Larroca) for Marvel Comics. Fraction started in comics by writing the graphic novels Last of the Independents and The Five Fists of Science. He is internationally known for his Casanova and his Marvel titles beyond Uncanny X-Men, Thor, and Invincible Iron Man include The Punisher War Journal, The Order, The Immortal Iron Fist, and The Sensational Spider-Man. Fraction’s Invincible Iron Man work led to him consulting on the set of the film Iron Man 2.

MARVEL MAKES THEIR STGCC DEBUT
Marvel confirms attendance at STGCC 2010 with exhibit space, recruitment efforts, Guests of Honor and panels

Singapore, 8 November 2010 – Reed Exhibitions, the organizers of the Singapore Toy, Games and Comic Convention (STGCC), announced today that Marvel Comics will be exhibiting at STGCC 2010. This is the first convention that Marvel has ever exhibited at in Asia. To date, Reed has announced a slew of Marvel talent at STGCC 2010 including Guest of Honor Salvador Larroca and other Walk of Fame Featured Guests including Leinil Yu, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Esad Ribic, Harvey Tolibao and Alex Maleev. Reed further revealed Marvel’s Senior Vice President, Creator & Content Development and international talent scout, C.B. Cebulski, will join Larroca as Guests of Honor at STGCC 2010. STGCC will take place from 10 to 12 December 2010, at the Suntec International Convention Centre.

There will also be a panel by Cebulski on Marvel’s talent hunt where he will give an inside look into the world of Marvel and what he looks for in the next Marvel artist. He will also explain the procedure for aspiring talent to submit a portfolio and the possibility of having it reviewed during the show. Cebulski’s panel is scheduled to take place on Friday, 10 December.

SINGAPORE TOY, GAMES & COMIC CONVENTION ANNOUNCES FIRST GUESTS AND PARTNERS

STGCC provides fans access to East and West pop culture icons through content, buzz and partnerships

Singapore, July 20, 2010: Reed Exhibitions, the world’s leading organizer of trade and consumer events, confirmed today the first guests and partners for the 2010 Singapore Toy Games, & Comic Convention (STGCC). The event, taking place December 10-12 at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre, is being co-produced by Reed’s Singapore office as well as ReedPOP in the USA — the team behind events including the New York Comic Con, New York Anime Festival, and Star Wars Celebration. STGCC’s inaugural guests include comic book illustrators Salvador Larroca and Giuseppe Camuncoli, cartoonists Phil Ortiz and Phil Yeh, and apparel, toy, and art designers Simone Legno. Additionally, Animax will serve as a key partner, not only promoting and featuring highlights of this event with over 40+ million Animax viewers across Asia but also presenting screenings and premieres at the convention as well as a unique opportunity for youths in Southeast Asia to become famous.

Sal Larroca on Invincible Iron Man

Illustrators Salvador Larroca and Giuseppe Camuncoli will be sketching and speaking about their works for Marvel Comics at STGCC. Larroca has worked on many popular characters including Captain America, Iron Man and Fantastic Four in Heroes Return. He has also worked on titles including Uncanny X-Men, Spider-Man and Elektra. Larroca is collaborating with Matt Fraction on The Invincible Iron Man. Camuncoli, also known as Cammo, has worked on titles including The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man’s Tangled Web and X-Infernus among others. Currently, he is now at work on the Marvel hit Dark Wolverine, written by Daniel Way and Marjorie Liu. Larroca comes to STGCC from Spain, and Cammo will be traveling from Italy, both through the assistance of Marvel Comics.

“This announcement kicks-off an exciting string of guests we are lining-up for STGCC 2010. Fans will be able to meet and engage with the creators of their heroes and villains on a personal level through autographing opportunities and panels, including interview sessions at STGCC,” said Ms Huileng Yeow, Project Director. “Through partnerships with publishers, associations and the community that we have been cultivating in the past few months, we are confident of delivering a broad range of content for Asian fans.”

In addition to Larroca and Cammo, cartoonists Phil Ortiz and Phil Yeh will be attending STGCC with the charitable organization Cartoonists Across America & the World. And Animax will serve as STGCC’s official media broadcast partner for the region.

Leading Event Organizer Extends Pop Culture Influence; Seeks Fans in World Communities

Norwalk, CT, April 13, 2010: Reed Exhibitions, the world’s leading organizer of trade and consumer events, has today announced that it has acquired the Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention (STGCC). Launched in 2008 and owned and operated by local event planner PI Events, STGCC is a strategic fit for Reed Exhibitions, which has an existing office in Singapore, and which has consolidated a team of professionals in its North American office to work exclusively on pop culture events. The new pop culture team will work closely with the Reed Exhibitions Singapore staff as well as maintain a strategic partnership with PI Events to stage a preeminent event in the Asian market which fits with other events in the Reed pop culture portfolio, including New York Comic Con (NYCC) and the soon to be launched Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2). The last STGCC took place in August, 2009. The next STGCC will take place from December 10-12, 2010 at the Suntec Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre (www.suntecsingapore.com).
