UK – Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Signing

Chaos.jpg.size-230Press Release:

FORBIDDEN PLANET celebrates the 50th anniversary of DOCTOR WHO with a special signing of the 50th Anniversary Collection from BBC Books. Eleven classic novels, one for each Doctor – repackaged with new introductions. And we have four of the authors for a special event on Saturday 9th March 1 – 2pm at the Forbidden Planet Megastore, 179 Shaftesbury Avenue, London SE1 0UP.

PLAYERS (TERRANCE DICKS) Arriving on the sun-baked veldt in the middle of the Boer War, the Sixth Doctor is soon involved in the adventures of struggling politician and war correspondent Winston Churchill. Of course, he knows Churchill is destined for great things, but unseen forces seem to be interfering with Winston’s historic career. The Doctor suspects the hidden hand of the Players, mysterious beings who regard human history as little more than a game. With time running out, can the Doctor find the right moves to defeat them?

REMEMBRANCE OF THE DALEKS (BEN AARONOVITCH) With unfinished business to attend to, the Seventh Doctor returns to where it all began: Coal Hill School in London in 1963. Last time he was here, the Doctor left something behind – a powerful Time Lord artefact that could unlock the secrets of time travel. Can the Doctor retrieve it before two rival factions of Daleks track it down? And even if he can, how will the Doctor prevent the whole of London becoming a war zone as the Daleks meet in explosive confrontation?

BEAUTIFUL CHAOS (GARY RUSSELL) Wilfred Mott is very happy: his granddaughter, Donna, is back home, catching up with family and gossiping about her journeys, and he has just discovered a new star and had it named after him. He takes the Tenth Doctor with him to the naming ceremony. But the Doctor soon discovers something else new, and worryingly bright, in the heavens – something that is heading for Earth. It’s an ancient force from the Dark Times. And it is very, very angry.

THE SILENT STARS GO BY (DAN ABNETT) The winter festival is approaching for the hardy colony of Morphans, but no one is in the mood to celebrate. They’re trying to build a new life on a cold new world, but each year gets harder and harder. It’s almost as if some dark force is working against them. Then three mysterious travelers arrive out of the midwinter night, one of them claiming to be a doctor. Are they bringing the gift of salvation or doom? And what else might be lurking out there, about to wake up?

UK – Nemo: Heart of Ice Signing

nemowebflyer

Writer Alan Moore and artist Kevin O’Neill sign the latest League of Extraordinary Gentleman book, Nemo: Heart of Ice, on Saturday, 9th March 2013 from 2:00 – 6:00 pm!

Press Release:

In the grim cold of March surfaces a thrilling new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen book — Nemo: Heart of Ice, a full-colour 56-page adventure in the classic pulp tradition by the inestimable Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill. In that same grim cold we are inviting you to stand in a backstreet of Soho clutching your League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen comics to be signed by the guys who made them. Ordinarily we’d save it for the summer so you could bring your deckchairs and beers instead of duvets and every cardigan you own but this simply can’t wait: it’s the launch day of Nemo: Heart of Ice and nobody will care about the weather because there’s a new League comic on the shelves.

It’s 1925, fifteen long years since Janni Dakkar first tried to escape the legacy of her dying science-pirate father, only to accept her destiny as the new Nemo, captain of the legendary Nautilus. Now, tired of her unending spree of plunder and destruction, Janni launches a grand expedition to surpass her father’s greatest failure: the exploration of Antarctica. Hot on her frozen trail are a trio of genius inventors, hired by an influential publishing tycoon to retrieve the plundered valuables of an African queen. It’s a deadly race to the bottom of the world — an uncharted land of wonder and horror where time is broken and the mountains bring madness. Jules Verne meets H.P. Lovecraft in the unforgettable final showdown, lost in the living, beating and appallingly inhuman HEART OF ICE.

Nemo: Heart of Ice. Hardcover. £9.99.

It’s all happening on Saturday the 9th of March from 2pm until 6pm. Given the size of previous Moore/O’Neill signings it’s a good idea to get there early so you don’t miss out.

Just a quick note on the rules for the day: because of time constraints Moore and Kevin will only signing copies of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century 1910, 1969, and 2009, the Black Dossier and the new Nemo book — with a limit of 3 items per person (any combination of those mentioned is fine, but only three things. No suitcases full of Swamp Thing back issues, please). We’ll have plenty of copies on the day but if you’d like to reserve anything drop us a line at info@goshlondon.com and we can sort you out.

Sadly, Alan & Kevin won’t have time to sign any extra stock, so if you can’t make it we recommend you find someone London-based (and very patient) to sit in the queue for you.

UK – Kryten Signs

Mask.jpg.size-230ROBERT LLEWELLYN reveals all – even the really embarrassing bits – in THE MAN IN THE RUBBER MASK, this completely updated inside story of RED DWARF. He’ll also be signing it at the Forbidden Planet London Megastore on Saturday 2nd March 1 – 2pm.

It was 1989 when Robert Llewellyn first had his head encased in the one-piece latex foam-rubber balaclava that was Kryten, and it gave him a distinctly funny turn.

Gazing at his own reflection and seeing the face of a robot staring back was surprisingly scary, not to mention sweaty. And he couldn’t even eat his lunch
. Since then, he has sweated, frozen, been set on fire, exploded, spent thousands of hours in the make-up chair and thousands more being taunted by Craig Charles. So it is a testament to the joyful camaraderie and life-enhancing silliness of Red Dwarf that 23 years later, Robert was still willing to risk life, limb and hairline to don the rubber torture helmet for Red Dwarf X, the triumphant return of the motley band of space bums.

Robert Llewellyn is an actor, novelist, screenwriter, comedian and TV presenter. As well as starring in Red Dwarf he has presented Scrapheap Challenge, How Do They Do It? and his own online show, Carpool. He is the author of five novels, including News from Gardenia published by Unbound. He writes under a rack of solar panels in Gloucestershire.

bb_jd

Brian Bolland signs at the Forbidden Planet London Megastore on Saturday 12th January from 3 – 4pm!

Mega-City One, 2099. This vast urban nightmare has sprung up from the post-apocalyptic ashes of North America’s east coast. Each of the 400 million citizens based there is a potential criminal and only the Judges can prevent total anarchy. These future lawmen are judge, jury, and executioner. Toughest of them all is Judge Dredd – he is the Law!

By the end of 1977 Brian Bolland was regularly handling art chores for John Wagner’s scripts on Judge Dredd. All told, he illustrated 19 stories. Judge Dredd: The Complete Brian Bolland collects these stories in oversized format, featuring meticulous modern coloring by Charlie Kirchoff.

Brian Bolland has earned a reputation as one of the best cover artists in the industry, and his elegantly composed and beautifully rendered pieces have graced a host of titles, including ANIMAL MAN, BATMAN, THE FLASH, THE INVISIBLES, WONDER WOMAN and many more. He’s also the designer of our legendary ‘People Like Us’ t-shirts.
