MA – WORDLESS!

ica

Art Spiegelman and Phillip Johnston appear at the ICA to perform WORDLESS! on Sunday, October 26th at 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM!

Press Release:

Art Spiegelman radically changed the public perception of comics with his Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece MAUS, earning the designation “father of the graphic novel.” In WORDLESS!—a genre-bending performance he calls a “hybrid slide talk, standup routine, academic lecture, and full-scale concert by Philip Johnston”—he takes viewers on a punchy personal tour of wordless novels by early-20th-century masters Frans Masereel, Lynd Ward, and Milt Gross. Accompanied by Johnston’s score of “rollicking, klezmer-inflected, vaudeville jazz” (Paris Review), WORDLESS! also features “Shaping Thought,” a new work Spiegelman drew specifically for the project.

CA – Archibald’s Next Big Thing Signing

thale

Tony Hale (Veep, Arrested Development) appears at Vroman’s Bookstore to present and sign Archibald’s Next Big Thing on Sunday October 26, 2014 at 1:00 PM!

Press Release:

Archibald’s Next Big Thing is the extraordinary adventure of an extra-ordinary chicken named Archibald Struer. His three brothers and one sister have each found their “Big Thing” (including a brother chicken who impressively grows human hair) and the only Big Thing Archibald has planned is what he’s eating for lunch. This all changes when he receives a mysterious blue card that reads “YOUR BIG THING IS HERE!” So, accompanied by a friendly bee named BEE, Archibald takes the card and heads out on a fantastic journey in hopes of finding his NEXT BIG THING. It’s a story that reminds us that, while looking for the next big thing isn’t a bad thing, we should always remember that big and beautiful things are all around us…right NOW.

About Tony Hale:

Actor/author Tony Hale is best known for his role as Gary Walsh, the downtrodden personal aide to Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Vice President Selina Meyers on HBO’s Emmy nominated political comedy, Veep. In 2013, Hale won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and was nominated again in 2014 for his performance.

Hale has appeared in a wide variety of critically acclaimed television programs and films throughout his career. Prior to Veep, he co-starred as the socially awkward Buster Bluth on the ground-breaking, Emmy Award-winning series Arrested Development, which aired on Fox from 2003 – 2006 and was later picked up for an additional season on Netflix in 2013.

MO – The Lonesome Go Signing

lgo

Tim Lane, one of St. Louis’ most influential & popular indie cartoonist, will be hosting a special release party for his newest Fantagraphics book, The Lonesome Go, at Star Clipper on Saturday, November 1st at 7:00 PM. Come meet Tim Lane and get an autographed copy of The Lonesome Go. Tim will also be hosting a carousel film connected to his new graphic novel and the short film will be accompanied with a live musical performance.

About The Lonesome Go:

Tim Lane continues his exploration of the Great American Mythological Drama that began with his first book, the critically acclaimed Abandoned Cars. This collection of stories is broadly linked together by the experience of wandering — both literally and figuratively. With compelling verisimilitude, the lives of his characters are depicted by way of rich mixtures of obscure myths and documented facts, dreams and reality, belief and disbelief, throughout a haunted landscape populated by the ghosts of a complex and rich fictional tapestry. You’ll witness a young man’s dubious quest to discover the myth of the protagonist from an obscure vintage comic strip; encounter sociopathic hobos in boxcars and misled young men whose facial pores sprout worms and who throw up babies into gas station toilets; visit modern “Hoovervilles”; and experience the life and death of an undocumented immigrant bookstore doorman, former boxer, and expert hustler.
