NYC – Visualizing the Words: Comics as Collaboration

000-soi-12315Comics pros Shawn Martinbrough (Thief of Thieves) and Danny Fingeroth (Spider-Man) appear at the Society of Illustrators on Thursday  December 3, 2015 at 6:30 PM show you how a comic book or graphic novel—what Will Eisner called “sequential art”—proceeds from idea to script to finished art. They will then discuss how Martinbrough has approached storytelling challenges from his creative collaborators, top comics writers including Robert Kirkman, Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka and others. Fingeroth will weigh in on Martinbrough’s storytelling choices, explaining how an editor impacts the content of a comics story. Shawn and Danny will then expand the discussion/demonstration to worlds beyond comics to discuss how Shawn applies his visual storytelling approach to projects beyond the comics industry.

For two decades, Martinbrough has worked for the top publishers in the comic book industry. His DC Comics work includes a two year collaboration with novelist Greg Rucka on Batman: Detective Comics. In it, Shawn co-created characters that were featured in the Batman: Gotham Knights animated DVD and currently appear on the FOX television series, GOTHAM. Shawn’s graphic novel projects for Marvel Entertainment include Luke Cage Noir, Black Panther: The Most Dangerous Man Alive, and a Captain America graphic novel for the U.S. Army & Air Force Exchange Service that had a million copy print run. It was distributed exclusively on military bases across the country in connection with the release of the feature film, Captain America: The First Avenger.

Shawn is currently illustrating Thief of Thieves, the bestselling Image Comics graphic novel series written by Robert Kirkman, the creator of the hit AMC television series, The Walking Dead. Thief of Thieves is in development for a live action television series.

Martinbrough is also the author of How to Draw Noir Comics: The Art and Technique of Visual Storytelling, published by Random House and reprinted in several languages.

A native of the Bronx, Martinbrough majored in art at New York’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and obtained his BFA in Illustration from The School of Visual Arts. His website is: www.shawnmartinbrough.com.

A longtime editor and writer for Marvel Comics, best known for his work on Spider-Man, Danny Fingeroth is an historian, writer and teacher of comics and graphic novels. Danny has spoken on comics at venues including The Smithsonian Institution, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Columbia University. His books includeSuperman on the Couch: What Superheroes Really Tell Us About Ourselves and Our Society, The Rough Guide to Graphic Novels and (with Mike Manley) How to Create Comics From Script to Print. Among other projects, Danny currently serves as a programming consultant to Wizard World Conventions, organizing and moderating panels with comics creators and pop culture experts at the company’s nationwide shows. NYC – Drawing Blood Launch Party

Molly Crabapple appears in conversation with Matt Taibbi at The PowerHouse Arena on Monday, November 30, 2015 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM for the launch of DRAWING BLOOD!

“Occupy’s greatest artist” (Rolling Stone) presents illustrations that chronicle the first fifteen years of our fractious twenty-first century with a new form of witness journalism.

Drawing Blood will change the way you think about art, sex, politics and survival in our times. An acclaimed artist and journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, and The Paris Review, and in her regular column in Vice (among many other venues), Crabapple has swiftly become one of the most provocative—and most-watched—voices at work today. Now, in a book that weaves together fresh, deeply moving language and dazzling, irreverent illustrations, this singular artist traces how the power of art, which gripped her from childhood, has given her a vehicle for understanding—perhaps even for changing—the world. “Art is hope against cynicism, creation against entropy,” she writes. “To make art is an act of both love and defiance.”
