In addition to the most recent Sarah’s Scribbles fan favorites and dozens of all-new comics, this volume contains illustrated personal essays on Sarah’s real-life experiences with anxiety, career, relationships and other adulthood challenges that will remind readers of Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half and Jenny Lawson’s Let’s Pretend This Never Happened. The same uniquely frank, real, yet humorous and uplifting tone that makes Sarah’s Scribbles so relatable blooms beautifully in this new longer form.

MA – Sticks Angelica, Folk Hero Signing

Press Release:

Harvard Book Store welcomes award-winning graphic novelist MICHAEL DEFORGE—author of Ant Colony, Big Kids, and First Year Healthy—for a presentation of his latest book, Sticks Angelica, Folk Hero. The evening will include music by special guest SADIE DUPUIS of Speedy Ortiz.

About Sticks Angelica, Folk Hero
Sticks Angelica is, in her own words, “49 years old. Former: Olympian, poet, scholar, sculptor, minister, activist, Governor General, entrepreneur, line cook, headmistress, Mountie, columnist, libertarian, cellist.” After a high-profile family scandal, Sticks escapes to the woods to live in what would be relative isolation were it not for the many animals that surround and inevitably annoy her. Sticks is an arrogant, self-obsessed force who wills herself on the flora and fauna. There is a rabbit named Oatmeal who harbors an unrequited love for her, a pair of kissing geese, a cross-dressing moose absurdly named Lisa Hanawalt. When a reporter named, ahem, Michael DeForge shows up to interview Sticks for his biography on her, she quickly slugs him and buries him up to his neck, immobilizing him. Instead, Sticks narrates her way through the forest, recalling formative incidents from her storied past in what becomes a strange sort of autobiography.

Deforge’s witty dialogue and deadpan narration create a bizarre, yet eerily familiar world. Sticks Angelica, Folk Hero plays with autobiography, biography, and hagiography to look at how we build our own sense of self and how others carry on the roles we create for them in our own personal dramas.

Image Comics: 25th Anniversary Founders Panel
Friday, 1PM- 2:30PM
Twenty-five years ago, a group of comics artists looked at the difference between what they were capable of and what they were being given, and left the promise of steady work for new pastures. The result was Image Comics, which has grown from an upstart group to a comics publisher that has changed the course of the industry. Image’s 25th anniversary year begins with this special event, a rare gathering that is not to be missed.

The Future Of Comics: Cultivating Identity
Friday, 4PM – 5PM
The comics you love the most tend to have a personal touch, something that helps you relate to the characters, or makes a fantastic situation more believable. Corinna Bechko (INVISIBLE REPUBLIC), Ray Fawkes (UNDERWINTER: SYMPHONY), Gabriel Hardman (THE BELFRY), and a few more special guests make works that use the personal touch to great effect, and they’re ready to share their insights with you.

The Future of Comics: Your Brand-New Favorites

Your favorite comics don’t look anything like those of your parents, siblings, or even your friends. There is such a wide variety of material out there that you can grab a comic on nearly any subject and find something to fall in love with. The work of Charles Soule (CURSE WORDS), Kurtis Wiebe (RAT QUEENS), Daniel Warren Johnson (EXTREMITY), and Joe Harris & Megan Hutchison (ROCKSTARS) is fantastic, no matter the genre they’re working in. Come find your new favorite comics at this panel, and discover a few new favorite creators, too.
