Jaime Hernandez appears on Friday, August 16th, 2013 at Minneapolis College of Art and Design as the special guest for an artist’s reception from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, surrounding a talk at 7:00 PM in Auditorium 150.

About the exhibit:

This solo exhibition features the work of renowned comic artist Jaime Hernandez who, with his brothers Gilbert and Mario, published the first issue of Love and Rockets in 1982. The black-and-white magazine ushered in a new alternative comics scene, featuring stories of high comedy and drama and spotlighting people who had rarely been seen in comics before.

Over the years the brothers developed their own storylines and spinoffs. Jaime’s Locas: The Maggie and Hopey Stories, tells the story of Maggie Chascarrillo, a bisexual, Mexican-American woman attempting to define herself in a community rife with class, race, and gender issues. As the New York Times Book Review described Locas, “These stories have all the visual smarts of film and the narrative smarts of literature….Hernandez specializes in psychological detail; we see both text and subtext immediately ….What better than to open a book that shows there is more going on than we dream of in our workaday philosophies?”

The retrospective show in MCAD Gallery will include examples of Jaime’s original drawings and publications from the early 1980s to the present.
