Press Release:

Dallas native Greg Pak is the guest of honor and speaker at the Friends of the Dallas Public Library’s fundraising dinner on Friday, November 4, 2011. Pak is a comic book writer and filmmaker best known for writing Marvel’s “Incredible Hulk” series over a six-year period including the epic “Planet Hulk” and “World War Hulk” comic book storylines, and for directing the award-winning feature film “Robot Stories” that played in 75 film festivals, won 35 awards, and was screened theatrically across the U.S.

Tickets are $150 (click here)

The Friends’ fall dinner is one of its primary means of raising support for the Dallas Public Library system and enables it to provide much needed funds for Library materials (books, DVDs, CDs, periodicals, etc.), for technology such as the new self-check machines in the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library and several branches, and for family programs, lectures, workshops and other essential services for Dallas residents.

The dinner, to be held at The Ritz Carlton (2121 McKinney Ave.), will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception and silent auction followed by a seated dinner and program. Greg Pak will be interviewed by culture critic and long-time friend Robert Wilonsky, Dallas Observer “Unfair Park” Editor. Ryan Sands and Angie Wang appears on Thursday November 3, 2011 from 6-10pm for a special art exhibit and release party for THICKNESS #2.

THICKNESS is a new anthology series of erotics comics, curated and published by Michael DeForge and Ryan Sands. Featuring original comics from a diverse group of contemporary cartoonists, THICKNESS highlights different proclivities, orientations, and depictions of “sex”. Each issue of Thickness features lettering and book design by Michael DeForge, and rich spot color interiors printed on Risograph.

The thicker 2nd issue gleefuly runs the entire gamut, from an elegant and impressionistic josei manga-inspired romp by Portland’s own Angie Wang, to the extended and Lynchian swamp tale by Mickey Zacchilli. The issue also features a masterful body swap tale by Michael DeForge, an extended and illicit teacher/student tale by Lisa Hanawalt, and a an epic and playful Dirty Pair parody/erotic retelling by Brandon Graham. Thickness #2 also includes a romantic/disgusting installment of TRUE CHUBBO by Ray Sohn and his wife, and a beautiful (and confrontational) sexy pinup by Jillian Tamaki.

Roz Chast appears at 8pm on November 19, 2011 at UC Berkeley.

Press Release:

New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast is a brilliant interpreter of the everyday—”the magazine’s only certifiable genius,” according to editor David Remnick. More than 1,000 of her hilariously skewed cartoons have appeared since 1978, featuring a recurring cast of generally hapless but relatively cheerful “everyfolk.” In her work, Chast addresses such prickly issues as guilt, anxiety, aging, families, money, and as she would say, “much, much more!” Her Cal Performances talk features an illustrated tour of the evolution of her drawing style, audience Q&A, and a book signing to follow.
