Season’s greetings! Thanks to all the followers and readers we’ve had during the course of the year! It’s been a blast reporting to you guys about the cons I go to, so you get a better sense of what’s out there, and what you can hope to enjoy should you attend a certain show.
I’m very excited to attend the first big show of the upcoming year in the southwest, the Amazing Arizona Comic Con! Run by one of the best retailers in the business, Jimmy Jay, I expect nothing but the best in what looks to be a spectacular show.
With huge guests such as Robert Kirkman, Jeph Loeb, and Rob Liefeld, along with recently added comics legend Todd McFarlane, I’m excited to get some commissions and get my books autographed! With affordable pricing on tickets, not to mention some very cool exclusive comics made especially for this show, I think this is going to be one of the better shows I’m attending this year. And I’m not even mentioning that 2 of the stars from the hit TV show, The Walking Dead, will be in attendance!
To encourage you guys to come join me, I’m offering a free contest myself! I will be giving away 3 prizes to anyone who registers from now until January 7th. Tweet @conventionscene and @AmazingComicCon a picture of a receipt of ticket purchase with the date of 12/31 or later and with the #CSContest tag.
I hope you all have a Happy New Year and hope to see you in Arizona!
Spike Lee signs at Book Soup on Sunday January 9, 2010 at 3:00pm.
Celebrating just more than 20 years since its seminal debut, Do The Right Thing remains one of the most important and controversial films of its era. Employing director Spike Lee’s hometown of Brooklyn as the essential setting, this explosive film masterfully explores race and class relationships. Both a critical and popular success, Do The Right Thing became a landmark film that brought serious issues in the African American community to light and established Lee as a major director in American cinema. Lee also wrote the screenplay, produced, and even starred in this deeply personal film, which was applauded for its commanding visuals provided by Danny Aiello and John Turturro, and an assertive soundtrack featuring Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power.”
Including an unprecedented insider’s look at the film, with behind-the-scenes visuals and interviews, this impressive book celebrates the impact of Do The Right Thing on our culture throughout the years. The film is even credited with bringing President Barack Obama and the First Lady together on their first date!
About the Authors:
SPIKE LEE is a writer, director, actor, producer and author who revolutionized the role of black talent in cinema. Widely regarded as a premiere African-American filmmaker, Lee is a forerunner in the ‘do it yourself’ school of independent film.
Lee’s most recent theatrical release is Miracle at St Anna, and other critical and box office successes have included Inside Man, 25th Hour, and Summer of Sam. Many of Lee’s films have earned various awards and nominations, including his 1989 film, Do the Right Thing, which garnered an Academy Award® nomination for Best Original Screenplay and Best Film and Director awards from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised in Brooklyn, Lee returned to the south to attend Morehouse College. After graduation, Lee continued his education at New York University where he received his Master of Fine Arts Degree in film production. Lee then founded 40 Acres and Mule Filmworks based in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn. Since 2002, Lee has been Artistic Director of the Graduate Film Program at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
JASON MATLOFF is a film journalist who has been writing about movies for more than a decade. Patton Oswalt signs on January 15, 2011 at 2:00 pm.
Widely known for his roles in the films Big Fan and Ratatouille, as well as the television hit The King of Queens, Patton Oswalt has been amusing audiences for decades. Now, with Zombie Spaceship Wasteland, he offers a fascinating look into his most unusual, and lovable, mindscape. Oswalt combines memoir with uproarious humor, from snow forts to Dungeons & Dragons to gifts from Grandma that had to be explained.
He remembers his teen summers spent working in a movie Cineplex and his early years doing stand-up. Then there’s the book’s centerpiece, which posits that before all young creative minds have anything to write about, they will home in on one of three story lines: zombies, spaceships, or wastelands. BookPeople is thrilled to host Patton Oswalt. While the talk is free to attend, if you would like a book signed it must be purchased from BookPeople. Free wristbands for the signing line will go out at 9AM the morning of the event.

Adrian Tomine signs on February 9th from 7:00PM – 8:00PM.
A loose, cartoony departure from Tomine’s previous work, Scenes from an Impending Marriage is a sweet-natured, laugh out-loud skewering of the modern marriage process, including hiring a DJ, location scouting, trips to the salon, suit fittings, dance lessons, registering for gifts, and managing familial demands. The most personal and autobiographical work of Tomine’s career, Scenes from an Impending Marriage is a charming, delightful token of love.

To honor that monumental beginning, I’ll be returning to my roots, so to speak, with the release of the 200th issue of SPAWN, almost 18 years later.”
