SF – Comics 4 Comix Fundraiser

Comics and comix collide as the funnies meet the funny in the sixth annual fundraiser and silent art auction for San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum.  Join the Bay Area’s funniest folk for a night of food, drink, and entertainment, and bid on original art by some of today’s brightest stars in comics.  This year Comics 4 Comix takes place on Tuesday, September 7th 2010, at San Francisco’s famed Punchline Comedy Club, 444 Battery Street.  The doors open at 6:30pm, and the show starts at 8pm. General admission tickets for this benefit cost $20.  Tickets may be purchased in advance from Livenation’s website (livenation.com) or at the door on the night of the event.

The Cartoon Art Museum will host an all-star cast of stand-up comics for this event, featuring headliner comedian and Simpsons writer Dana Gould,  as well as local comedians Joe Klocek, Mike Meehan, and host Michael Capozzola, comedian and creator of the comic strip Surveillance Caricatures in the San Francisco Chronicle’s 96 hours section. Accommodations for our headliner are being provided by the InterContinental San Francisco.  Performances will begin at 8 pm.  In addition to getting a dose of high comedy, attendees will have the opportunity to bid on and peruse original comic strip art from popular local and national cartoonists, including Dan Piraro (Bizarro), Lynn Johnston (For Better or For Worse), Michael Jantze (The Norm), Jack Davis (Mad Magazine), Keith Knight (The K Chronicles), and much, much more.

NYC – Comics at the Brooklyn Book Festival

Brooklyn’s annual celebration of books and authors will take place the weekend of September 10-12 at Brooklyn Borough Hall and other locations in the borough. The Brooklyn Book Festival will also feature two panels on comics:

The International Graphic Novel: Drawing from Life. Three acclaimed cartoonists, whose work takes on social and political themes, talk about the on-the-ground research and background work they have all done in preparation for creating their books. London-based author Nick Abadzis (Laika), Josh Neufeld (AD: New Orleans After The Deluge) and Jessica Abel (La Perdida). Moderated by Matt Madden (99 Ways To Tell a Story).

Comics and Form: Is the Medium Still the Message? Do comics change when they are released from their traditional print medium? And how? Creators, publishers and developers will combine to discuss the expanding boundaries of the comics format. Robert Berry (Ulysses Seen), Ben Katchor (Julius Knipl: Real Estate Photographer), Jillian Tamaki (Skim). Moderated by Columbia University librarian Karen Green.

The Hero Initiative was established to aid comic creators with a financial safety net when in need of emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work.  In the years since its inception, the board has created an award to recognize those individuals in the industry that have dedicated their talent over the lifetime of their careers to the comic book community at-large, achieving the status of Hero.  Previous recipients include John Romita, Joe Kubert, Nick Cardy, Neal Adams, and George Perez.  Who will be this year’s lifetime Hero?

The Dick Giordano Humanitarian of the Year Award will make its debut at the Harvey Awards Banquet at the 2010 Baltimore Comic-Con on August 28. Giordano, who passed away in early 2010, was part of Hero Initiative’s Board of Directors. He was also a legendary artist, a guiding force at Charlton Comics and DC Comics for many years, a mentor to his colleagues, and a friend to all who knew him. His legacy epitomizes the caring and commitment Hero Initiative strives to achieve. In his honor, The Dick Giordano Humanitarian of the Year Award will recognize one person in comics each year who has demonstrated the generosity and integrity Dick brought to the charity, and to the comic book community at large.

UK – The Fall Signing

Forbidden Planet regrets to announce that Guillermo Del Toro has had to cancel his visit to the UK and his appearance with us will not go ahead on 6th October.

Both Forbidden Planet and Harper Collins are doing everything possible to ensure that pre-orders made through the Forbidden Planet website for signed stock will be fulfilled.

We apologise for the inconvenience and disappointment this may cause. We will update our web page with more information as we have it.

Guillermo del Toro signs his new novel The Fall at the Forbidden Planet Megastore, 179 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, WC2H 8JR, on Wednesday 6th October 6 – 7pm.

In this fantastic sequel to The Strain, humans have been displaced at the top of the food chain, and now understand what it is to be not the consumer, but the consumed. Ephraim Goodweather, director of the New York office of the Centers for Disease control, is one of the few humans who understands what is really happening. Vampires have arrived in New York City, and their condition is contagious. If they cannot be contained, the entire world is at risk of infection. As the Biblical origins of the Ancient ones are gradually revealed, Eph learns that there is a greater, more terrible plan in store for the human race – worse even than annihilation…

Guillermo del Toro came to prominence with cult horror movies such as Chronos and The Devil’s Backbone and made his Hollywood directorial debut with the classic Blade II.  Rapidly followed by the box office and critical hit Hellboy and the Oscar-winning Pan’s Labyrinth, del Toro has established himself as one of the leading directors in the genre.

Forbidden Planet is the largest store of its kind in the world. Some of the biggest names in Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Comics and Cult Entertainment have come to our London Megastore for signing events, including: Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Terry Gilliam, Simon Pegg, William Gibson, Mark Millar, Brian Froud and Stephen King.
