Graphically Speaking: Jeffrey Brown’s UNDELETED SCENES
North York Central Library, 5120 Yonge St, Toronto, ON
Monday, April 26, 2010 – 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
FREE TO ATTEND
Part of the Keep Toronto Reading Festival. Presented by The Toronto Comic Arts Festival and The Beguiling
Jeffrey Brown, one of the most celebrated autobiographical cartoonists of the past 10 years, returns to Toronto to celebrate the release of his newest graphic novel Undeleted Scenes. Brown is best known for his “Girlfriend Trilogy” of graphic novels including Clumsy, Unlikely, and AEIOU, from Top Shelf, and his recent works for Simon & Shuster’s Touchstone Books line including Funny Misshapen Body and Little Things. In addition, Brown’s popular Cat Getting Out of a Paper Bag is on its fourth printing for Chronicle Books, and last year Brown directed an animated music video for pop-rockers Death Cab for Cutie.
Undeleted Scenes collects all of Jeffrey Brown’s short stories and non-fiction pieces created since the release of Clumsy into one 352 page book, including little-seen and rare material. Brown will be on-hand to talk about the unique challenges of creating soul-bearing autobiography in comics, his development as a cartoonist and storyteller, and blurring the line between fact and fiction.
Graphically Speaking: Jeffrey Brown’s Undeleted Scenes is presented in partnership with The Toronto Comic Arts Festival, a week long comics event culminating in a two-day exhibition at Toronto Reference Library, May 8th and 9th 2010. For the complete list of Keep Toronto Reading programming check out their wesbsite. Hope to see you there!
Up for auction is the opportunity to get an original, one of a kind convention sketch from comic artist Adam Hughes.
Click here for the auction! (Ends Mar 31, 2010 18:25:07 PDT)
As many collectors and fans know, Adam is renowned for his cover art on such books as Catwoman and Wonder Woman, as well as limited run covers for such titles as Powergirl, the Legion of Super Heroes, Joss Whedon’s Serenity and assorted Star Wars projects, to name but a few. His designs for Sideshow Collectibles Marvel Comiquette Statues as well as DC Direct’s Women of the DCU busts and Covergirls statue series are much sought after and enjoyed. This auction is YOUR chance to have one of Adam’s pieces added to your collection, and not just any piece. The artwork you win will be a fully rendered sketch of the character of your choice. The images attached to this auction are an example of the quality of work that the winner can expect to receive.
To participate in this auction, you must meet the following criteria: the artwork must be collected from Adam in person by the winner at the upcoming WonderCon in San Fransisco, California. The dates of the convention are April 2nd to April 4th. You must be an attendee at the show, and be able to provide photo ID proving you are the same individual that won this auction. No one else will be allowed to pick up this artwork; so please if you do not plan on being at the WonderCon, do not bid. We cannot make exceptions. You must be able to pay in full via paypal at the close of this auction or make arrangements to pay in cash at the opening of the show. Failure to do so will result in a second chance offer being sent out to the next highest bidder.
The following restrictions will also apply to this auction: Your request may be of a single character of your choosing. Adam reserves the right to add any complimentary characters that he may feel completes the piece of artwork. The artwork will be completed in gray-scale marker as all of Adam’s convention sketches are, with painted highlights added as Adam deems it necessary. The examples included with this auction may look like color was used; Adam achieved this effect using a combination or warm and cool gray tones markers. The artwork will be 11 by 14 inches, and all materials used are archival in quality. No lewd requests will be accepted, nor any content deemed to be offensive. If you ask for something that is either of these, we will politely ask you for a second choice for the subject of your sketch.
Your artwork will be completed at the Wonder Con, on the first day of the show (if possible), unless other arrangements are made. For example; if you only plan on attending on Saturday, and would like to watch your sketch being worked on, we can move your piece to the first sketch of Saturday. Adam or myself will be in touch with you prior to the convention to talk about your sketch request. You can pick up your artwork from our table at any time during the weekend. However, if you neglect to collect your sketch, you will forfeit it. We cannot be responsible for shipping unclaimed artwork at the end of the show, and as stated earlier, the art MUST be picked up by the auction winner; no substitutions will be allowed.
Thank you for your participation in this auction. I know many people would like us to do this sort of thing for other shows, and even simply to provide Adam’s fans with a source for sketches outside of conventions. This is something we will consider in the coming months. But for now, we are looking forward to the trip to San Fransisco, and Wonder Con, and wish everyone the best of luck in the auction!
