Shamus buys “The Best One-Day Show in the South!”
New York, NY (January 19, 2010) – Gareb Shamus announced today that he acquired and will produce the Atlanta Comic Convention, now renamed Atlanta Comic Con Wizard World Convention.
“The spirit of the Atlanta convention was very much in line with our own shows. The fans in Georgia appreciate the festival feel of this show,” Shamus, CEO of New York-based Wizard Entertainment said. “The fans here are savvy, and they are ready for the evolution of their con.”
Founded in 1994 by 20-year comic veteran Wes Tillander, the Atlanta Comic Convention showcases comics, cards, prints, gaming artwork, videos, toys, manga, anime, statues, new artists, book signings and much more.
“Giving fans a little of everything is something I’ve been doing for years,” said former owner Tillander. “There are so many facets of this industry that comics fans appreciate and expect to see as part of a show. With Wizard producing the show, I know that mixed presentation idea will really thrive.”
Tillander will consult on Atlanta Comic Con to maintain the local traditions of the event. Wizard will expand the show from a one-day format to a three-day weekend format, while many aspects of pop culture will continue to be represented. Kid Goth Profiled

Neil Gaiman was recently profiled by Dana Goodyear for The New Yorker and gave some insight to his convention-going experience:
“Comics, science fiction, and fantasy conventions are nowadays something of a hardship for Gaiman—”like being a maggoty log at a woodpecker convention,” he says. A few years ago, he was at a convention with Angelina Jolie, who played Grendel’s mother in the movie “Beowulf,” for which Gaiman co-wrote the screenplay. “When I try to explain that I attracted more attention than she did, people say, ‘Oh, ho, he’s being funny.’ I’m not.” At Worldcon, the international science-fiction convention, where he was the guest of honor in August, people walked around wearing pins that read “Neil Gaiman! Squeeeeeee!”—an expression of hysterical enthusiasm.”

On Sunday, 1/17/10, Golden Apple threw a signing event supporting Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco, selling I’m With Coco posters and with artist Mike Mitchell in attendance. Mitchell told everyone about the rally going on the next day, in front of Conan’s studio at the Universal Lot. He also mentioned the Red Cross will be there as well, asking people to donate money for charitable causes, such as the Haiti earthquake crisis. A long line of people braved rainy conditions and came out to support Team Coco and bought posters. Here are some pictures of the event:

Joe Hill, co-creator of Locke & Key, goes on tour for his new novel Horns and writes on his blog:

HORNS is out in just over a month, which means I’m on tour, which means your chance to see my adorable smiling face (pictured above) is right around the corner. My current tour schedule is below, but keep in mind that it is subject to change, and that dates may be added, removed, or shifted around. You can trust me to update this post as more information comes in. I don’t, for example, have any UK dates, but I know a brief UK tour is under discussion. So stay tuned.
On a related HORNS note, before the week is out, I’m going to put up another post, fielding some of the more common questions I’ve had about the book. If you’ve got a question for me about HORNS, ask it in the comments thread, and maybe I’ll get to it (I’m collecting questions on Twitter as well).
Now I won’t be saying too much about the plot – this will be a spoiler free Q&A – but I’m glad to address stuff about release dates, or how the book got written, or why it took so long, or whatever you might have for me. You can also ask about L&K, H-SB or 20TH CENTURY GHOSTS, as long as you can tie it into HORNS in some way. If you did have a good question, you’d actually be doing me a favor by asking it. I have to do a mini-web-video-thing about the book and I don’t have a lot of practice talking about it yet, and so this will help me get my thoughts in order.

Diamond and Wizard announce plans for 2010
Diamond Comic Distributors and Wizard Entertainment have announced a renewal of its strategic partnership, with several new initiatives planned for 2010.
The first event for both companies will be tied to Wizard’s Philadelphia Comic Con, with Diamond hosting a trade only event for retailers.
At Wizard’s Philadelphia Comic Con, Diamond will host a hospitality suite where retailers can meet one-on-one with Diamond customer service and sales representatives, as well as schedule exclusive demos on Diamond’s point-of-sale program, ComicSuite.
“Wizard remains an important vendor for Diamond and its comic book retail accounts,” said Diamond’s VP-Purchasing, Bill Schanes. “We look forward to working together more closely in the coming year, with special events and publishing projects that will help retailers sell more products.”
“I am proud of my 20 year friendship with Diamond – Steve Geppi, Bill Schanes, Roger Fletcher, and the rest of the Diamond crew,” said Wizard CEO, Gareb Shamus. “By using the combination of Wizard, ToyFare, FunFare and or our ever expanding comic con tour, we are now able to host Diamond retailers.”
In 2009, Wizard was a top ten publisher to the comic book specialty market, according to Diamond’s year-end market share, and continues to provide successful publications and products for the comics industry. Additional projects are slated between the two companies, with details to be announced at a later date.
Wizard’s Philadelphia Comic Con is scheduled for June 11-13, 2010 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Retailers will join with tens of thousands of fans to converge at Philadelphia Comic Con 2010 to celebrate what’s great in pop culture: Movies, Comics, Toys, Video Gaming, Games, TV, Anime, Manga, Horror, Wrestling, MMA, Original Art, Collectibles, and more!
