Kevin Smith signs Shootin’ The Sh*t

Tuesday 06 October 18:00 – 19:00

Forbidden Planet London Megastore, 179 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, UK, WC2H 8JR

Collecting the finest moments of Smith’s ‘SModcast’ conversations with Scott Mosier, this lewd, crude and hilariously rude book exposes the humorous highs and lows of Kevin Smith’s compulsive and pop-cultural verbal commentary. Discover the genesis of Stalin’s Monkey Soldier army, the horrifying tale of Kevin vs. Steak Tartare, how to make bukkake eggs, the lengths to which Jason Mewes would go for a free comic, and how Kevin was once willing to let Alanis Morissette get mugged… Silent Bob has a whole lot more to say – and it’s well worth the listen!

Kevin Smith sold his comic book collection to fund Clerks – and bought them straight back after the film became a hit. He was the producer of the Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting and has written and directed Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl, Clerks II and Zack and Miri Make A Porno. He’s also both author and comics writer. Shootin’ the Sh*t follows the enormous success of his New York Times bestseller My Boring-Ass Life, also published by Titan Books.

Kevin Smith will only be signing Shootin The Sh*t. This event will be popular – limits may be applied on the number of items signed and the number of people at the event. Please refer to this page for further updates before you come to the store.

Tuesday, September 22
7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Join us for a panel discussion featuring some of the most groundbreaking and innovative cartoonists working today. Our guests will discuss ink and pixels, pigments and politics, and how the love of comics mixes with the sticky waters of the business. Panelists will also answer your thought and question bubbles.

Our panelists:

Lalo Alcaraz is a Los Angeles-based cartoonist and creator of the first nationally syndicated Latino-themed political daily comic strip, La Cucaracha. Lalo drew editorial cartoons for the LA Weekly from 1992 to 2009. Lalo illustrated Latino USA: A Cartoon History (text by Ilan Stavans), and produced the books La Cucaracha, La Cucaracha (the first collection from his daily comic strip) and Migra Mouse, a collection of his editorial cartoons on immigration. He is also a screenwriter and a popular speaker on the college circuit. His award-winning artwork has appeared across the US and the planet. Lalo also hosts the popular radio program The Pocho Hour of Power Fridays at 4:00 p.m. on KPFK 90.7 FM.

Jaime Hernandez is the co-creator of the beloved Love and Rockets series, one of the pioneering alternative comics of the 1980s. Love and Rockets, initially a self-published single comic, was picked up by Fantagraphics Books and produced 50 issues before the series went dormant in 1996. In 2001, the run was revived as Love and Rockets Volume 2. In the interim, Jaime’s solo projects included Whoa, Nellie!, Penny Century, and Maggie and Hopey Color Fun. Jaime has also worked for The New Yorker, Spin, and Hustler, and has done album covers for Michelle Shocked, 7 Year Bitch, The Indigo Girls, and Los Lobos. In 2006, he produced a 20-part strip in The New York Times Magazine titled La Maggie La Loca. Jaime was born in Oxnard, California, and now lives in Pasadena with his wife and daughter.

Darrin Bell was the first African American cartoonist to have two comics in syndication at the same time. He creates the controversial comic strip “Candorville” (syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group) and co-creates the comic strip “Rudy Park” (syndicated by United Media). His editorials have appeared regularly in such papers as the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and Oakland Tribune, and sparked numerous organized protests across the country. His most controversial cartoons have been featured as news items on 60 Minutes, MTV and the network newscasts. Darrin was born and raised in Los Angeles.

Marv Wolfman is a forty-year veteran in the field of comic book writing. After lengthy runs working for Marvel Comics in the 1970s on such titles as Amazing Spider-Man and Dr. Strange (and creating the character of Nova), Wolfman moved to competitor DC Comics where he has mostly remained since. There, with penciller George Perez, Wolfman co-created The New Teen Titans, which has seen life beyond the comics page as a Cartoon Network series and whose characters have appeared in the television program Smallville. Also with Perez, Wolfman is responsible for the groundbreaking mini-series Crisis on Infinite Earths. He has won numerous awards for his writing and helped pioneer the receiving of writing credits for for-hire work.

Moderator Salvador Plascencia was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and raised in El Monte, California. His debut novel, The People of Paper, was named a best book of the year by the San Francisco Chronicle and the Los Angeles Times, and has been translated into ten languages. He is the recipient of the Bard Fiction Prize and the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. Salvador is a Visiting Professor at UC Davis.

Eoin Colfer signs And Another Thing

Wednesday 14 October 18:00 – 19:00

Forbidden Planet Megastore, 179 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, WC2H 8JR

In a record-breaking event in 1980, the late, great Douglas Adams did a legendary signing at Forbidden Planet on Denmark Street, London – a signing that took up half-a-dozen pages in his biography.

It’s a very special moment for us to be welcoming Eoin Colfer (Artemis Fowl), signing the sixth book in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy And Another Thing at the Forbidden Planet Megastore, 179 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, WC2H 8JR, on Wednesday 14th October 6 – 7pm.

Adams himself said that the Hitchhiker’s series deserved a sixth book to end the story on an upbeat note; Eoin Colfer, best known for his wonderful Artemis Fowl series, is true follower of Adams’ legacy with his views of the absurdities of life, the universe and everything. There is no better person to be taking Arthur, Zaphod and Marvin out into pastures new.

A lifelong Hitchhiker fan, he said, ‘Being given the chance to write this book is like suddenly being offered the superpower of your choice. For years I have been finishing this incredible story in my head and now I have the opportunity to do it in the real world.’ Prepare to be amazed!

To commemorate Forbidden’s Planet’s affection for Hitchhiker, Penguin Books are kindly offering a FREE Limited Edition signed poster to the first 150 guests

SF – Fort Knox Debuts

fk_header-over

Paul Jon at the Cartoon Art Museum on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 7pm for a detailed presentation on what it took to get his Fort Knox feature signed and launched with the Washington Post Writers Group (hint: lots of blood, sweat and groveling).  The strip launches nationwide on Monday, October 5, 2009.  Paul Jon, an Army brat, grew up all over the country and will tell you how he survived the multiple moves, merciless bullies and chronic asthma.  He later managed to stuff his experiences in his comic creation, Fort Knox – the first syndicated comic strip centering on a military family.  As a special treat, Paul Jon will have his long-suffering parents at the event.  Feel free to give them your condolences.

This special event is free and open to the public.

About the comic strip:  Fort Knox chronicles the life of a military family:  Dad, Major Joe Knox; Mom, Jane Knox; and their two boys, Donald and Wesley.  The family has picked up and moved — again — thousands of miles from family and friends to take up residence at Joe’s new assignment at Fort Lincoln.  Donald and Wesley have moved before, but that doesn’t make it any easier on them.  They must face down new bullies, master a new school system and new teachers, and navigate a new community.  Added to these pressures is the distance the move puts between them and their beloved grandmother, who’s a known troublemaker if not a known felon (yet).  On top of all that, there’s the strain that military life puts on their parents’ otherwise happy marriage.

About the artist: Fort Knox:  Cartoonist Paul Jon is, of course, a military brat himself.  ”The downside was that every time we moved, I gained a new bully.  Eventually, I had to give them numbers to keep track,” he jokes.  ”In many ways, they were like terrifying personal trainers.  Thanks to all the running away I did, I was able to overcome my childhood asthma.”

“Since 2005, Paul Jon has been developing Fort Knox and tapping the well of his childhood experiences — the frustrations and embarrassments and angst,” says Washington Post Writers Group Comics Editor Amy Lago.  ”Four years of cartooning no doubt has been cheaper for Paul Jon than four years of therapy.  The Writers Group is pleased that the cartooning, at least, is beginning to pay off.”  Fort Knox will be distributed by the Writers Group starting Oct. 5.

Cartoonist Paul Jon is the son of an Army colonel whose tours of duty included Fort Leavenworth, Fort Jackson and Fort Knox, and who, every morning, liked to say to his fellow soldiers, “It’s a great day to be in the Army.”  Paul Jon understands his dad’s attitude, and feels that being a military brat “made me understand the sacrifices that military families make for our country, and also made me a better person for having to deal with new people all the time.”  Luckily for Paul Jon, he had an eccentric red-haired brother and his trusty inhaler to keep him company through each change in location.

In addition to his daily and Sunday Fort Knox duties, Paul Jon runs the creative services department of a Bay Area software company, and his artwork has appeared in newspapers, magazines and online publications across the country.  He earned his B.A. in journalism from the University of South Carolina.
